Running on Memory: The Running Group That Refuses to Leave Anyone Behind
In our club, some runners live with dementia. The greatest gift of a running group isn’t the fitness — it’s the friendships.
Friendships often provide intangible gifts you never realized you needed.
I have been a runner since the 7th grade. We ran a mile every year in gym class and my time was the fastest for girls in the entire school. It was a small, rural school encompassing 7th through 12 grades.
In school, I ran the mile, 2-mile, mile relay and 2-mile relay on the high school track team. I was a long distance runner. Endurance and stamina were key. I won a few races.
Like most of my life, I would say it was a “lumpy” commitment; I took a break during child-rearing years until the children started running, too, then it became a renewed and group effort.
We ran Turkey Trots as a family.
