Dating Again at 49: The Surprising Lesson I Learned About Love
How midlife romance and endurance races taught me the beauty of letting go
The Dishes
He looked at me across the sink and said:
“Sometimes my dishes stay there for a while. But they’ll get washed. I can tell this is a thing for you.”
I hadn’t said a word. He knew anyway. And he was right.
Dating at 49
After 22 years of marriage, I never imagined I’d find myself dating again at 49. Dating later in life comes with a different kind of clarity, and its own surprises.
Midlife dating is freeing in some ways. You know what you want. You know your deal breakers. But there’s something else: it also calls for pragmatism. At first, I came at it with my usual intensity, but over time I let go of expectations and allowed it to unfold without pressure.
Loving Someone as They Are
Somewhere along the way I came across this message:
Love someone exactly as they are today, not who you want them to be, not who they might become, but who they are right now.
That line stopped me.
Ironman Love
He is a man who has completed countless 70.3 Ironman races, plus a full Ironman. Early on, he convinced me to register for my first 70.3. We crossed the finish line together in April, another in July, and have one more this month.

Before meeting him, I never would have imagined tackling this distance once, let alone three times in a single year, proof that new challenges don’t have an expiration date.
Storms, Roads, and Trust
One ride in the Maryland mountains tested us in more ways than the weather forecast suggested. Torrential rain. Plunging temperatures. Lost roads. I was holding it together by a fraying thread.
He stayed calm. Focused. When the moment came, he flagged down a passing car.
I climbed into a stranger’s vehicle for the first time in my life because I trusted him.
That day confirmed what I already knew deep down: I could count on his steady presence, in uncertainty and beyond.
The Tradeoff
So…can I handle dishes in the sink in exchange for this man?
Absolutely.
An Invitation
Relationships are beautiful, messy, and beautifully messy.
So I’ll leave you with this:
Is someone “letting you down”?
Do you have a list of shoulds for them?
What might shift if you chose to love them just as they are?
Maybe your answer is yes. Maybe it’s no. But it’s worth asking.
I’m glad I did.
