Rust Web Development Is Changing: Do You Really Need WebAssembly?
Rust can build serious web applications without turning every page into a WebAssembly application. The interesting question is when WebAssembly actually earns its complexity.
For years, one of the most exciting ideas in Rust web development was simple:
Write your web application in Rust, compile it to WebAssembly, and run Rust directly in the browser.
It sounded almost perfect.
You could use Rust’s type system.
You could share code between frontend and backend.
You could avoid writing as much JavaScript.
And for certain applications, WebAssembly can deliver excellent performance.
Rust’s official WebAssembly documentation still highlights predictable performance, small code size, and JavaScript interoperability as important reasons to use Rust with WebAssembly.
But something interesting is happening in Rust web development.
Developers are increasingly asking a different question:
Do I actually need WebAssembly for this application?
