No Sad Songs: My life with cancer

The author: days before my diagnosis

Have you ever wanted to share something deeply personal but hesitated because you feared you might regret posting it? Once a story is online, you can’t always control where it goes or how people respond.

I’ve struggled with that question myself. This is a story I’ve found difficult to revisit, partly because some of my memories are hazy. But perhaps it’s time to tell it.

I remember sitting on the ottoman in my living room, my left foot resting on my right, when I felt pins and needles. I tried to stand, then suddenly fell. My right foot hurt so badly that I could barely walk.

The next day, my husband, Michael, took me to the emergency room. After bloodwork and an EKG, a resident told me I had an irregular heartbeat that needed further attention. An X-ray revealed that I’d broken the fifth metatarsal in my right foot. I also had a urinary tract infection.

I can’t remember exactly when I began feeling weak. Was it after the fall, the next morning, or only when I arrived at the hospital? My recollections of those days are blurred.
