NVIDIA vs AMD for Local LLMs in 2026: The Honest State of ROCm
AMD is finally ready to help you bypass NVIDIA’s massive VRAM tax, if you are willing to make one specific compromise.
If you have tried building a local AI rig recently, you already know the pain. NVIDIA’s prices remain sky-high, and if you want enough VRAM to run modern, capable LLMs, you are forced to spend some serious money.
Then you look over at AMD’s side of the aisle.
The Radeon RX 7900 XTX sits on the shelf with 24GB of high-speed VRAM for roughly half the price than an equivalent 24GB card from NVIDIA, the RTX 4090. On paper, AMD destroys NVIDIA on pure price-per-gigabyte.
So why isn’t every local AI builder buying AMD?
Here’s the answer nobody gives you straight, the hardware was never AMD’s problem; it was the software. And in 2026, that software finally started catching up, just not evenly, and not everywhere.
If you ask around on Reddit today, you will hear two completely contradictory takes: half the community says “ROCm is finally fixed,” while the other half insists “it’s still broken.” Both sides are actually right. It just depends entirely on what operating system you boot into every morning.
