How Ginni Rometty Influenced COBOL Programming
“You never let someone define who you are. Only you define who you are.”
— Ginni Rometty, former IBM CEO
Ginni Rometty, who served as IBM’s Chairman, President, and CEO from 2012 to 2020, influenced COBOL programming primarily through her broader corporate initiatives to modernize legacy systems, advance the hybrid cloud, and reform tech education.
While COBOL was created decades before her tenure by pioneers like Grace Hopper, Rometty, through her role at IBM, played a critical part in ensuring that the billions of lines of COBOL code powering the global economy did not become obsolete.
Instead of pushing to eliminate COBOL, Rometty’s leadership transformed how the language interacts with modern enterprise technology in several distinct ways:
1. The Pivot to Hybrid Cloud and API Integration
While at IBM, Rometty notably shifted IBM’s strategy away from traditional hardware sales toward hybrid cloud and artificial intelligence (AI). This strategy directly impacted COBOL.
Under her guidance, IBM stopped treating mainframe architecture (the natural home of COBOL) as an isolated, legacy silo. Instead, IBM developed software and tools that allowed companies to expose their existing…
