Introduction

From a distance, we could hear a military band playing but had no idea what was happening. So, we walked over to Buckingham Palace to see what was going on. It turned out to be the end of the Captain’s Inspection.

There were inevitably loads of tourists around; one next to me came from the Netherlands and was most excited to see what was happening on the Buckingham Palace forecourt.

We had to stand outside the railings, of course, but it’s a free show for anyone prepared to stand uncomfortably amongst the crowds. My husband and I only caught the end, but it was still worth seeing and hearing.

Household Cavalry

You might have noticed that the musicians are dressed in two different uniforms. That’s because the Household Cavalry is a union formed in 1992 of the two most senior regiments in the British Army: The Life Guards and The Blues & Royals.

The Life Guards wear a red tunic with white horsehair plumes on their helmets whereas the Blues & Royals wear a dark blue tunic with red horsehair plumes on their helmets.
