My new ebook on finding any note in Obsidian is out. All of its text is free on this blog over the next two and a half weeks; the book gives you all of it today, in one book, with a foreword, exercises, a merged FAQ and a cheat sheet appendix. Launch code LAUNCH for €10 off until October 29.

My new ebook on finding any note in Obsidian is available now. And if you’d rather not pay, all of its text is coming to this blog as free articles, starting today.

Introduction

You know the note exists. You wrote it yourself, last month or three years ago. But you can’t remember what you called it, and searching for what you think was in it returns more results than you’ll ever scan. So you give up, and you write the same note again. Or worse, you stop trusting your vault.

I’ve been there too. My own vault holds about 30,000 notes, so I had to solve this problem properly. When I dug into the research on how people re-find their own information, the findings surprised me. A small 2004 diary study at MIT, by Jaime Teevan and her colleagues, found that people used keyword search in only 39% of their searches, even when they knew key details about what they were looking for. They navigated first, and searched when navigating failed.

My take: whether you’ll find a note again is mostly decided when you WRITE it. Its name, its aliases, its type, a few properties and a couple of links do most of the work. The search box can only use what you put there.

That’s what I’ve been writing about for the past few weeks, and it turned into a book. In this article, I want to tell you what’s in it, what you can read for free, and how to get the book at the launch price.

The Obsidian Search Handbook is available now

The Obsidian Search Handbook is my method for finding notes in Obsidian, in one book. It’s the 2026 edition: a 254-page PDF, plus an EPUB, so you can read it on your computer, your tablet or your e-reader.

The Obsidian Search Handbook, 2026 edition (254-page PDF, and EPUB).

It covers the whole chain, in the order that works for me: designing notes you can find, structuring the vault, Obsidian’s built-in search, the terminal, navigation, plugins, AI search and resurfacing. Every chapter ends with a “Try this” exercise, so you apply the idea instead of nodding along. At the end, you get a FAQ (38 questions), a cheat sheet appendix and an appendix that compares the tools and shows my own search order. Updates are free for the whole 2026 edition (all 1.x versions); it’s written and checked against Obsidian 1.14.

🔗 The Obsidian Search Handbook | Find Any Note When You Need It (2026 edition)

What’s inside

Twelve chapters:

Why you can’t find your notes: the research on re-finding information, the FILE framework, the findability stack and LATCH

Design notes you can find: names, the acronym trick, aliases, note types, a minimum of metadata, and tags as pathways

Structure a findable vault: folders by type, the archive, links and Maps of Content, dates, daily notes and a capture-time checklist

Fix a messy vault: a 30-day makeover at 15 minutes a day, for a vault that’s already a mess

Obsidian search mastered: the quick switcher, the link suggester, the Search operators, and Bases

Beyond the basics: version history, the Obsidian CLI, mobile, and what to do when search misses a note

Search from outside Obsidian: ripgrep, fzf, OS search, git history, and the files that live outside your vault

Navigate your vault: backlinks, unlinked mentions, the local graph, Canvas, hub notes and bookmarks

The best plugins for finding notes: the ones worth installing, and how to vet them

AI search explained: keyword, semantic, hybrid and agentic search, a 20-query test, and the risks

Set up AI search: qmd, MCP servers, and how my AI assistant finds things in 30,000 notes

Resurfacing: random notes, on-this-day views, review queues, and a routine you can copy

Don’t skip the first four chapters because they’re not about search tools. Trust me, they’re the ones that will save you the most time.

The whole text is free

I strongly believe that this kind of knowledge should be accessible to everyone. So all the text of the book is also coming to this blog, as free articles. What the articles don’t have: the foreword, the exercises, the merged FAQ, the cheat sheet appendix and the files of the Complete edition.

The overview is out today: The Complete Guide to Obsidian Search — Find Any Note When You Need It. It gives you the map, the search escalation ladder and the tool comparison.

Then one part per weekday, over the next two and a half weeks:

Fri, Oct 23: Why You Can’t Find Your Notes

Mon, Oct 26: Design Notes You Can Find

Tue, Oct 27: Structure a Findable Obsidian Vault

Wed, Oct 28: Fix a Messy Obsidian Vault

Thu, Oct 29: Obsidian Search Mastered

Fri, Oct 30: Obsidian Search Beyond the Basics

Mon, Nov 2: Search Your Obsidian Vault From Outside Obsidian

Tue, Nov 3: Navigate Your Obsidian Vault

Wed, Nov 4: The Best Obsidian Plugins for Finding Notes

Thu, Nov 5: AI Search for Your Obsidian Vault

Fri, Nov 6: Set Up AI Search for Your Obsidian Vault

Mon, Nov 9: Resurfacing in Obsidian

Each one goes live on its date. And to be clear: if the free articles give you what you need, you don’t need the book. I mean it.

What the book adds

So why pay for text that’s free? Fair question.

Start with the Complete edition, because that’s where most of the extra value is. On top of the book, it gives you the files to put the method to work in your own vault:

The Findability Starter Pack: note templates, 6 Bases, 35 saved searches, ripgrep and fzf scripts, a qmd setup, and an AGENTS.md snippet that tells your AI assistant how to search your vault. It’s a small starter set built from my own vault, not the Obsidian Starter Kit

6 worksheets: the LATCH audit, the capture-time checklist, the 30-day makeover tracker, the 20-query search test, a search log and a resurfacing routine

The book itself (in both editions) is the same text as the free articles, assembled into one book, plus a few things the articles don’t have:

Everything, today. You don’t wait until November 9 for the last part.

A foreword and the exercises. A “Try this” at the end of every chapter. Reading about aliases changes nothing; renaming the note you couldn’t find last week does.

The reference material in one place. The merged FAQ (38 questions), the cheat sheet appendix and the tool comparison.

Offline. A PDF and an EPUB you keep on any device.

Pricing and the launch code

Two editions:

Complete (the book, the Starter Pack and the worksheets): €49

Book (the ebook, PDF and EPUB): €29

For the launch, the code LAUNCH gives you €10 off either edition: the Complete edition for €39, the Book for €19. One code per order. The launch price ends Thursday, October 29, at 23:59 CET. That’s the only deadline; the free articles stay free.

Prices are shown before VAT; EU VAT is added at checkout based on your country.

The Complete edition is also included in the Everything Knowledge Bundle.

🔗 Everything Knowledge Bundle: Own the Complete Knowledge System | €399.99 (Save €489)

As with all my products, there’s a 30-day money-back guarantee. If the book isn’t for you, reply to your receipt email within 30 days and I’ll refund you.

Who it’s for

This book is for you if:

Your vault has grown to the point where notes get lost. The note exists, but its name is gone, or Search returns too many results

You write a lot (articles, research, meeting notes, a work vault) and you re-find your own material every day

You want AI search on your vault, and you want to know what works, what to configure and how to measure it

You’re just getting started. Findability is decided when a note is created, so the first chapters will spare you a big cleanup later

It’s NOT for you if you want a list of plugins to install and nothing else. The notes come first, the tools second. And if you don’t use Obsidian, parts of it apply to any Markdown vault, but every example is Obsidian.

How to get it

The store page has both editions. Don’t forget the code LAUNCH at checkout.

🔗 The Obsidian Search Handbook | Find Any Note When You Need It (2026 edition)

Want a taste first? Grab the free cheat sheet

Free cheat sheet. If you only want the short version, I made a free PDF: the Free Obsidian Search Cheat Sheet. It has the commands and operators worth remembering (quick switcher, Search, Bases, the Obsidian CLI, ripgrep, fzf and qmd) and the search escalation ladder: which tool to reach for, in which order, depending on what you remember about the note.

Keep it open next to your vault. Enter your email on the page and I’ll send it right away, followed by a few short emails about finding notes (you can unsubscribe at any time).

🔗 Free Obsidian Search Cheat Sheet: operators and the search escalation ladder

Get the free Obsidian Search Cheat Sheet. 13 pages to keep next to your vault: the search operators worth remembering and the search escalation ladder. Enter your email and I’ll send it right away. You’ll also get a few short follow-up emails about finding notes in Obsidian, and you can unsubscribe at any time.

FAQ

I’ll read the free articles. Is the book still worth it? Maybe not, and that’s fine. The book gives you the same text today, in one book, plus a foreword, the exercises, the merged FAQ and the cheat sheet appendix. The Complete edition adds the Starter Pack and the worksheets, which the articles don’t have.

Do I need the Obsidian Starter Kit? No. The book works with any vault. The Obsidian Starter Kit ships the note types, templates, properties and Bases described in it, if you’d rather start from a finished system.

Do I need AI tools? No. Two chapters cover AI search. The other ten work without it.

How do updates work? Updates are free for the whole 2026 edition (all 1.x versions); it’s written and checked against Obsidian 1.14. New versions show up in your Gumroad library.

Conclusion

I wrote this book because I needed it. At 30,000 notes, “just search for it” stops working, and so does “just organize better”. What works is designing notes so they can be found, then using the right tool for what you remember.

Read the free articles, buy the book, or both. Either way, start with one small thing this week: take the last note you couldn’t find, and rename it with the words you used to look for it.

That’s it for today! ✨

The Obsidian Search Handbook Is Out, and Its Ideas Are Free was originally published in Personal Knowledge Management Journal on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

A newsletter discussing AI, Knowledge Work, Knowledge Management Systems, Zen Productivity, Personal Organization, and everything in between!

Edition 218 of my newsletter, discussing Knowledge Work, AI, Knowledge Management, Zen Productivity, Personal Organization, and more!

Hello everyone! I’m Sébastien Dubois, your host. You’re receiving this email because you signed up for DeveloPassion’s Newsletter, or bought one of my products. Thank you for being here with me ✨

If you enjoy this, please forward it to your friends ❤️. If this email was forwarded to you, then don’t forget to subscribe and become a supporter

Welcome

Welcome to all the new readers ❤️

Last time, I promised the next edition would come from a married man. Promise kept 💍

On Saturday, September 19th, my wife and I said yes. Twice, actually: once at the town hall, once at the church. Then 150 guests and a brass band joined us to celebrate. Even the sun that nobody expected decided to show up. The day was perfect from start to finish. I’m still smiling when I think about it.

September 19th, 2026 ❤️

Nobody warned me about the days after, though. You spend months preparing a single day, it goes by in a flash, and then… it’s Monday. If you’ve been through it, you probably know what I mean 😅

Getting back to work helped. And I had a ton of work waiting for me. In particular, one big release waiting. The Obsidian Starter Kit v5 is out. As promised, I waited until after the wedding, so that I could be fully there for you when it landed.

Alright, let’s gooooo 🚀

Highlights

📦 Obsidian Starter Kit v5 is out. The AI-ready vault I run my whole business from. Last release at the current price

💬 A new plugin: Knowii Community for Obsidian. Read, post, reply and get notified about what’s happening within the community without leaving your vault.

🔌 Agentic Resource Discovery Server is now in the Obsidian plugin directory. My Claude Code sessions are now lighter than ever.

🎥 Knowii Video AI now has scenes, a scene editor, cut by transcript and YouTube-ready exports.

🧠 My take on three AI launches: Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Code Projects, and Jev (a model that decides instead of writing)

Before You Go Any Further

Help me reach more people; share the link with someone in your circle who’d benefit from joining us. And don’t forget to mention the Knowii Community ❤️

And if you bought some of my products or courses? Please leave a rating/review. It really helps ❤️

📦 Obsidian Starter Kit v5 Is Out

Obsidian Starter Kit v5, the AI-ready vault I run my business from

Version 5 of the Obsidian Starter Kit shipped on September 25th. If you’re subscribed to my blog, you already received the launch article by email. I won’t repeat it all here; I’d rather tell you what it means to me.

This kit is the vault I actually work in. My newsletter, my articles, my videos, my Obsidian plugins, my product launches, my CRM, my goals, projects, tasks, activities, etc: all of it lives there. And v5 brings the kit back in line with the vault I use every day. Everything that proved itself over the past months is in the box.

In short:

Your AI knows your whole context. Goals, projects, tasks, activities, ideas, people, notes, and even how you write, structured so that AI Agents can find it all. You stop re-explaining yourself every session

Your AI does the work. A library of AI skills and a team of agents that write, plan, research, review and file notes with/for you. And they remember what they did from one session to the next

It does the boring work even without AI. Finished work files itself, your daily routines are one click away (Quick Actions), every commitment gets a home (Activities and Ideas), and you plan the week you want before it starts (the Ideal Week)

It works on day one. Note types, templates, plugins, skills and MCP servers come wired together

There’s a LOT more in the release notes. I spent a ton of time preparing this release.

I also recorded a short promo video (made with Remotion, which I’m enjoying more and more):
https://medium.com/media/21bb64d8a3ed8a19a19f4c23133c8c14/href
If you already own the kit, the update is free, as always. Download v5.0.x from your Gumroad library or from the Knowii Obsidian Starter Kit space ( https://learn.knowii.net explains both), back up your vault, then follow the migration guide.

Already on 5.0.0? Get 5.0.1. Some of you told me that daily notes sometimes came out empty. You were right. Since Templater 2.25, the “Trigger Templater on new file creation” setting is stored per device and OFF by default, so the value shipped in the kit was simply ignored. My own vault worked fine because the setting was already on for my machine, so my testing didn’t catch it. Manual fix: Settings → Community plugins → Templater → turn on “Trigger Templater on new file creation”. Do it on EACH device.

If you don’t own it yet, now’s the time. v5 is the last release at the current price: €199.99 for Essentials, or €249.99 for Premium (which adds the Obsidian Starter Course). Every future update stays included at no extra cost, and there’s a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Give your AI superpowers with the Obsidian vault I run my whole business from

Release notes and migration guide:

Obsidian Starter Kit - Release Notes - v5.0.0?ref=dsebastien.net - DeveloPassion

Questions? Ask me in the Knowii announcement thread: https://www.knowii.net/c/announcements/obsidian-starter-kit-v5-0-0-is-here

💬 Knowii, Inside Obsidian

I spend most of my day in Obsidian. Yet taking part in a discussion in the Knowii Community meant switching to the browser. And coming back to Obsidian ten minutes later.

So I built the Knowii Community plugin for Obsidian.

The Knowii Community, inside Obsidian

What it does:

The whole community in a pane, in the main area or in the sidebar. You sign in once

Notifications inside Obsidian (and system notifications if you want them): direct messages, replies, mentions, new posts, events. Unread counts show up in the status bar and on the ribbon icon. You can even reply to a direct message straight from the notice

A “What’s new” inbox, think Gmail for the community. Searchable, and marking items as read or archiving them syncs back to Knowii

Save as note: any post (with its comments) or chat thread becomes a note in one click

Ask the community from a text selection or from a whole note

Upcoming events, with a reminder 15 minutes before they start

Saving a community post as a note

The “save as note” part is the one I’m most excited about. When you find something useful in the community, it belongs in your knowledge base. Copy-pasting from a browser tab doesn’t count.

The plugin ships with the Obsidian Starter Kit v5 (enabled by default).

Knowii Community

🔌 Stop Preloading Your AI Skills

My vault contains hundreds of AI skills and dozens of agents. That’s great… until you look how much context it uses.

Claude Code loads the name and description of every skill when a session starts. With a library that size, it cost me tens of thousands of tokens per session, before I even typed a word. And every new skill made it worse. The more useful my library became, the more expensive each session got (not exactly the incentive I was looking for).

I created the Agentic Resource Discovery Server plugin for Obsidian to fix that. It turns your vault into a local catalog of your skills and agents, served over HTTP and MCP (the standard way for AI assistants to talk to external tools). Instead of loading everything up front, AI Agents can use it to search the catalog when it needs something, and fetches only that.

It’s now listed in the official Obsidian plugin directory, and it’s set up by default in the Obsidian Starter Kit v5.

Agentic Resource Discovery Server

GitHub Radar

I maintain a LOT of open source and private repositories, spread across my own accounts and multiple organizations. Obsidian plugins, the Obsidian Starter Kit, Knowii tools and various websites. Keeping track of every open issue and pull request was a mess. I tried GitHub Projects, but couldn’t get what I needed easily.

So I built GitHub Radar: a single page app listing every open issue and pull request across the users, organizations and repositories you care about.

GitHub Radar, every open issue and pull request on one page

Don’t worry about logging in. There’s no server behind. Your GitHub token (PAT) is only ever sent to GitHub itself.

It’s free and open source, and it’s generic: point it at your own sources and it works for you too.

GitHub Radar

Software for One

A couple of years ago, building apps for yourself was quite hard to justify. The time investment required to build certain apps did not make much economic sense. One would just do it out of sheer passion, as a way to acquire/hone skills, as a leisure activity or as a starting point for building a product/business. And the number of things you could afford to build (however talented you were) was quite limited.

Today, with AI Agents, the equation has changed. It’s now a perfectly reasonable call to build your own things, even if they’re just for you. Adam Waxman wrote a great essay about this, which sparked a lively discussion on Hacker News. He calls it software for one.

The thing is, once you CAN build almost anything, the real skill becomes deciding what deserves to be built. My rule of thumb: build only where the friction blocks a goal that matters to you, and where nothing out there fits the way you work. Everything else can wait, be bought, or be tolerated.

Of course, it still does make sense to build things just for fun, for learning or as a starting point for building a product or business. That’s not my point. The point here is that the bar was lowered, and the ceiling has moved up. Many more people can now build what they need, without necessarily spending months or years learning how to write code. And makers can now build a whole lot more than they could before.

Just don’t forget that every tool you build is also something you’ll have to maintain (with or without AI). And maintenance requires time no matter what.

I’ve written a full article on this topic. It’s coming soon.

🎥 Latest Videos

Journaling Is the Most Underrated Knowledge Management Habit. When you hear “journaling”, you might think about feelings and self-reflection. That’s part of it of course. But my daily note is also where I focus, where I track my life, and where every piece of knowledge enters my system. It’s the engine of my productivity. It’s my guiding light. It’s my guardrail.

To help you get started, one of the lessons of my Knowledge Management for Beginners course is now free on YouTube:
https://medium.com/media/2dae0584f44e3286a47b2027fa90de20/href
Design Your Ideal Week in Obsidian. Two features I added to the Kanban Action Planner plugin for Obsidian: triage mode, to decide what matters on a crowded board one card at a time, and ideal week mode, to plan how you actually want to spend your time. I introduced the Ideal Week in the last edition; this video shows it in action.
https://medium.com/media/ea35f0d0902b28d86e3fe5619af32243/href
The Lab 🧪

🎥 Knowii Video AI Learned to Edit

In the last edition, I told you about my video editor app project. Since then, it grew up quite a bit:

Scenes: choose a composition per take (camera only, screen with my face in a corner, face above the screen with captions in between…). And a scene editor to create your own, on a live preview

Cut by transcript: select words in the transcript to cut them, or tighten a pause. With undo and redo

Preview before export: watch the video exactly as it will be exported, cuts and all

YouTube-ready exports: several formats and qualities in one go (4K and 1080p, mp4 and webm), with support for generating SRT files or integrating captions directly in the videos

Voice leveling: exports can even out my voice

Transcript fixes: correct a misheard word once, and the fix goes everywhere (app, captions, transcript file).

Knowii Voice AI integration: Knowii Video AI can now detect a Knowii Voice AI installation, and use it for transcription.

Every feature works on three surfaces: the window, the command line, and AI agents through the MCP server 🔥

🎙️ Knowii Voice AI

The next Knowii Voice AI release is getting big: on top of the batch I described last time, there’s now an Obsidian integration (in beta); also with specific support for the Obsidian Starter Kit. The next release is coming soon.

🧩 Kanban Action Planner

The Kanban Action Planner plugin for Obsidian has continued to evolve. The highlights:

The targets table: a second way to look at your Ideal Week. Weekly targets per activity, planned time and the gap, grouped by area of your life

A visual Pomodoro timer, with a full-screen variant, plus better time tracking (pause, idle detection, chained phases)

An Archive button on done columns, to archive the whole column at once (if you don’t want to wait for the automated archiving)

Card titles without the note type’s prefix or suffix, status colors for every note type, and more (also integrated with OSK)

Overview

🔌 Other Project Updates

Claude Epic Status Line 2.1.0: the cost of each turn in your context, a pace projection on the rate limits, and a hint telling you when to /compact or /clear

AI Editor 0.11.0: a right-click menu on the review findings, and you can now act on findings in note properties right from the panel

A heads-up if you use Dataview Serializer: version 3.1.3 renamed the “insert query block” command. If you had a hotkey or a mobile toolbar button for it, check it after the update

Security/maintenance updates for most of my (20+) plugins

🔗 Cool Finds

Three AI launches caught my attention recently. I wrote a short take on each:

Claude Opus 5.5: Claude Fable 5.1-level work on most tasks, for about 40% less than Opus 5. And it finally writes clearly. Watch out for the breaking API changes and the safeguard routing (some requests get answered by an older model): https://www.dsebastien.net/claude-opus-5-5-fable-level-work-for-less-than-half-the-price/

Claude Sonnet 5.5: didn’t have time to write about this freshly released model, but it looks really powerful/affordable!

Claude Code Projects: one conversation that splits the work into parallel threads automatically. You stop orchestrating sessions and talk to ONE agent that manages the others: https://www.dsebastien.net/claude-code-projects-stop-managing-sessions-talk-to-one-agent/

Jev and Decision Models (DMs): a new kind of model focused on making decisions with calibrated probabilities, at a fraction of the cost of an LLM. And it’s crazy fast too: https://www.dsebastien.net/jev-and-system-one-models-a-semantic-if-statement-for-your-code/

🧠 Tip of the Week

Keep your daily note open all day.

Most people open their journal once in a while, if at all. Try the opposite. Open today’s note in the morning, and leave it open.

Use it for three things:

Focus: the two or three things that matter today, at the top

Track: what you did, what went wrong, what you’re grateful for

Capture: every idea, link or half-baked thought goes there first. Sort it out later

It sounds trivial. It’s not. It can actually be life-changing. It gives you an anchor for everything: what you want to do, what you’ve achieved, the problems you’re facing, the ideas you have in mind, your discoveries, etc. Use it throughout the day, and tell me if ADHD is still a big issue once you’ve built that habit! Point AI at it, and you’ll see how much leverage that alone can create!

🧠 Quote of the Week

Those who don’t build have to burn — Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451

Don’t listen to naysayers. If they have time to criticize or complain, it’s probably because they’re not busy creating themselves. Your AI knows your context, does the work, and it’s ready on day one.

Version 5 of the Obsidian Starter Kit is out. It’s the vault I run my whole business from, and it’s 100% ready for AI. Open Claude Code in it and your AI already knows your goals, your projects, the people you work with and how you write. It comes with a whole library of AI skills and a team of agents to do the work with you. One knowledge base, and your AI can run anything from it.

In this article, I’ll show you what that looks like, what the vault does for you even without AI, and why today is the best moment to get it.

Obsidian Starter Kit - Give Your AI Superpowers | Knowledge Forge

TL;DR

Your AI knows your whole context. Goals, projects, tasks, people, notes, and even how you write: it all lives in one vault, structured so Claude Code or Codex can read it. You stop re-explaining yourself every session.

Your AI does the work. A library of AI skills and a team of agents write, plan, research, review and file notes for you, and they remember what they did from one session to the next.

It works on day one. Note types, templates, skills and MCP servers come wired together. Open Claude Code in the vault and it’s already connected. AI knows everything there is to know.

I run my whole business from it. The newsletter, the articles, the Knowii Community, my Obsidian plugins, product launches, source code, customers, goals and the week ahead: planned, written and tracked here, every single day. v5.0.0 is that vault. You get the entire system.

It does the boring work even without AI. Finished work files itself, your daily routines are one click away, every commitment gets a home, and you plan the week you want before it starts.

Buy once, get every update. Every future version is included at no extra cost, and there’s a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Now’s the time. v5 is the last release at the current price. If you want the kit at the best price, get it before it goes up.

Why this release exists

I don’t maintain this system as a separate thing. I use my vault every day, for writing, for the community, for shipping plugins, for running the business with AI agents, for software development, … The kit lags behind my vault by design: I only ship what I’ve used long enough to trust.

Recently, my action system grew a dependency layer. Statuses started stamping their own dates. Buttons replaced half of my command palette habits. The OSK plugin learned to automate actions (e.g., archive done tasks), modify note types and validate notes. At some point “a few updates” becomes “a new version”.

So v5 brings the kit back in line with the vault I currently use. Everything that proved itself in my daily work is in the box.

Finished work files itself

A board full of done cards hides the work that’s left. Most systems leave that cleanup to you, so you do it by hand, or you don’t, and your lists slowly turn into archives.

In the kit, each note type declares its statuses once: which ones count as done. Seven days after its done date, a finished goal, plan, project, task, activity or idea moves to its archive folder, links intact. Books get their reading dates, and creations flip to published when you publish them. Every rule is listed in the settings, where you can change the delay, switch it off or add new ones.

I don’t do any of this by hand anymore. Neither should you.

The things you do every day are one click away

The Quick Actions buttons on a daily note

Most of what happens in a daily note is the same handful of moves: add a task, mark one done, roll yesterday’s over. Those should always be at your fingertips. So the daily note carries a set of buttons: add a task, mark something done, roll unfinished tasks over, log in Life Tracker, jump to the previous or next day. Captures write to the right section of today’s note without you even opening it.

Weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly notes get previous and next buttons plus a capture that writes into that period’s note, and a panel in the right sidebar holds every button. All periodic notes also share one shape: intentions first, captures during the period, and a Closing at the end. A weekly review feels like a daily one, just zoomed out. This makes it easier to scan.

Every commitment gets a home

If you’ve ever had a “project” that stayed Active for two years, you had an activity in disguise! Projects end. The newsletter, the side business, your health: those never do.

The tasks board: from This Year down to This Week

Now, the action system has a place for each. Activities hold the work that “never” ends. Ideas hold what you might do but haven’t committed to yet. Goals, plans, projects, tasks, activities and ideas link to each other across the whole hierarchy, including what blocks what and which milestones matter, and they all get Kanban boards.

Every project note shows its tasks three ways: a Board, a Schedule (calendar) and a Breakdown. Here’s a tour of the Kanban Action Planner that powers the boards:

▶️ A tour of the Kanban Action Planner, the plugin behind the boards, calendars and project views

The Kanban Action Planner documentation covers the rest (hint: there’s a ton more and it keeps evolving!).

Plan the week you want

A weekly target with no time blocked for it is a wish.

The ideal week: recurring time blocks for every activity

Open Kanban: Activities and it shows your ideal week: a week grid with no dates, where every active activity gets its recurring time blocks (e.g., deep work on weekday mornings, the newsletter on Thursday evening). Draw a block, drag it, stretch it across days, undo when you change your mind. A rail next to the grid lists each activity against its weekly target, and a targets table shows what’s left of your available week. You see which targets have real time behind them before the week even starts.

▶️ Planning an ideal week for your activities in the Obsidian Starter Kit

See where your time really goes

A project breakdown with progress, dates, estimates and tracked time

Decide how many hours a week each activity or project deserves, then compare target, planned and tracked time side by side, per activity and per area of life. Once work is done, the dates the plugin stamps give you your delivery stats for free: cycle time (how long it took), lead time (how long it waited after you said yes) and your on-time rate.

These views are plain Obsidian Bases, so they work without AI.

Obsidian Starter Kit - Give Your AI Superpowers | Knowledge Forge

An AI assistant with limitless power

Most people use AI like a stranger. Every chat starts from zero, and you spend the first minutes explaining who you are, what you’re working on and how you like things done. In the kit, your AI starts from everything you know.

Your goals, projects, tasks, the people you work with, the books you read, ideas you care about, your values, your notes, your writing voice. It all lives in one vault, in plain Markdown, with note types the AI understands and can use perfectly. Ask Claude Code to plan your week, and it works from your goals, your projects and your time targets. When you need a draft, it writes like you. Before a meeting, it pulls up what you know about the people in it.

It doesn’t stop at answering, either. The kit ships a whole library of AI skills and a team of agents that do the work with you, right in your vault:

a personal assistant and a project manager that plan your days and keep your projects moving

a coach for your weekly reviews, and a mentor for the long view

a researcher that turns your notes, your Readwise highlights and the web into structured briefs

an editor and a review panel that go through your writing before it goes out

a wiki curator that builds a knowledge base on any topic you want to master

And the agents remember. After every session, each one writes down what it was asked, what it did and what it learned, so the next session starts where the last one stopped.

Everything is wired on day one. Start Claude Code or Codex in the vault and it’s already connected: note types and validation through the OSK plugin, reading and writing notes, tasks and time tracking through TaskNotes, your skills through the ARD server, plus Readwise and qmd if you install them. Claude Code gets all of it; Codex, Gemini CLI and GitHub Copilot get part of it (the FAQ lists what each tool gets).

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Various points above are “handled” by generic Obsidian setups created by AI. But it’s just sub-par compared to what Obsidian Starter Kit enables. Notes don’t have random metadata. AI doesn’t generate notes and metadata randomly. Everything is clearly documented, validated, etc. This system is on a completely different level. With this, you can build yourself a knowledge base for life. Not just a drawer full of junk.

All that power doesn’t cost you your AI context window. Loading every skill up front would burn tens of thousands of tokens before you type a word, so the kit is very smart when it comes to loading skills. Claude Code (or another AI Agent Harness you prefer) searches the skill catalog and loads only finds the skill(s) a task needs.

Rather keep AI out of your vault? That’s fine. The system is made for humans FIRST, and AI second. If you don’t use AI, then you still have a world-class system at your disposal!

The vault I actually work in

My own vault’s graph, colored by note type

The note types, templates, plugins, Bases, skills and agents are the ones I use every day.

v5 adds new plugins I found to be valuable. Each one has earned its place in my vault. You get 50+ note types, from books and people to goals and ideas, each with its template, its properties and its place in the vault. The user guide covers everything in detail.

The full list is in the release notes (there’s a LOT).

I’ve been using and growing my system over four years. I use it daily. As I said, this is not a toy; it’s at the very core of everything I do.

Buy once, keep getting updates

When you buy the kit, you get every future version at no extra cost. That’s how it has always worked, and v5 doesn’t change it. The vault is yours. Plain Markdown files on your machine, with or without me. It’s not a system you rent. It’s a system you own.

Get it now, at this price

v5 is the last release at the current price. Right now, that’s €199.99 for Essentials, or €249.99 for Premium, which adds the Obsidian Starter Course (2h20m of video). If you want the best price, now’s the time.

To be clear, only the price changes. The kit keeps getting updates after v5, and if you buy now, you get every one of them at no extra cost. And if it’s not for you, there’s a 30-day money-back guarantee.

👉 Get the Obsidian Starter Kit: https://www.store.dsebastien.net/product/obsidian-starter-kit

Obsidian Starter Kit - Give Your AI Superpowers | Knowledge Forge

Conclusion

The Obsidian Starter Kit is the system I use every day to write, publish, build products, run a community and plan my weeks, think, research, and much more. v5 is that system as it runs today. If you’ve been looking for a vault that works from day one, this is it.

Want to see everything that’s in v5?

Edition 217 of my newsletter, discussing Knowledge Work, AI, Knowledge Management, Zen Productivity, Personal Organization, and more!

This one is going to be shorter than usual (at least that’s the plan, we’ll see how it goes 😅). The wedding is 5 days. My bachelor party was this weekend, and apparently we survived ;-)

I’ve been running DeveloPassion at about ten hours a week to keep my head above water. A lovely reason to be busy.

Good news on the hardware front: the RTX 5080 saga from the last edition is over. It was not the GPU. The culprit was the RAM’s XMP profile, which the new card refused to live with on my motherboard. One BIOS toggle later, no more crashes. Of course I had to “verify” the fix thoroughly. Red Dead Redemption 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Path of Exile 2. Purely for science 😉

On the reading side, I’m still in Dimensions (Book) by Nathalie A. Cabrol. Slow going, but I’m enjoying it.

Alright, let’s gooooo 🚀

Highlights

📅 Design the week you actually want. Kanban Action Planner now holds your Ideal Week: decide where your hours should go to serve your goals, then compare it with where they actually went

✍️ Can you prove you wrote it? Daniel Prindii featured my Time Machine plugin for Obsidian in his newsletter, in a piece about proving authorship in the age of AI. It got me thinking, and I’m writing an article about it

🎁 A new free resource: The Complete Guide to Obsidian Automation as a 62-page PDF. Plus a brand new page listing everything I give away for free

🗺️ Knowii Learning Paths launched: https://learn.knowii.net tells you what to do first with everything you bought from me

📦 Obsidian Starter Kit v5 is about two weeks away. The release is almost ready. I’m holding it until after the wedding so I can be fully there for you when it lands

🎥 Knowii Video AI is now a working app.

🧩 The Obsidian Starter Kit gained Quick Actions, Activities and Ideas in the Action System, time budgets, and periodic notes with one shape at every level

🔌 The Obsidian Starter Kit plugin evolved a lot: status configuration, automation rules, template sections, validate and retype commands, object properties, …

Before You Go Any Further

Help me reach more people; share the link with someone in your circle who’d benefit from joining us. And don’t forget to mention the Knowii Community ❤️

And if you bought some of my products or courses? Please leave a rating/review. It really helps ❤️

📅 Design the Week You Actually Want

The Kanban Action Planner plugin for Obsidian continued to evolve a lot since the last edition. The feature I’m most excited about is the Ideal Week mode.

Design your ideal week

Ask yourself: if you could design a week from scratch, where would your hours go? What would the week that would actually move your goals forward look like? Most of us never answer that question. We react. The calendar fills up, the urgent eats the important, and at the end of the month we wonder where the time went.

The Ideal Week mode is a place to answer it. It’s a grid of a week with no dates on it. You take your activities and projects (the ones linked to your goals), and you lay them out. Drag, resize, stretch across days, copy a block to another day, undo when you change your mind.

The point isn’t to follow it to the minute. Reality will disagree with your ideal week every single week; that’s fine. The point is to have designed it. To have sat down once, looked at your goals, and decided deliberately where your time would be best spent. That’s what mindful time allocation looks like in practice.

Combined with the time tracking and Pomodoro support (added in v1.24), you can capture where your time went, and compare with how you wanted to spend it. This is valuable because it enables adjusting course as you go. Instead of reacting to whatever happens, you can step back and think “is this really what I should spend my precious time on right now?”.

Try it this week: open the Ideal Week, place your three most important activities first, and only then let everything else fill the gaps.

🔗 Kanban Action Planner documentation

✍️ Can You Prove You Wrote It?

Two weeks ago, Daniel Prindii published the 15th edition of his newsletter, titled “Can you prove your writing is your own, and it wasn’t AI-generated?”. In it, he featured a screenshot of my Time Machine plugin as one of the ways to keep a trace of how a text came to be. Thank you, Daniel! That made my day ❤️

🔗 Can you prove you writing is your own, and it wasn’t AI-generated? | Miscellanea

Go read it. It’s a good piece. Daniel cites a study where AI detectors flagged 60+% of essays written by non-native English speakers as machine-generated. If you write in your second language (like I do), the tools are biased against you. And watermarking won’t save us either, because every AI company ships its own scheme, and none of them recognizes the others.

His conclusion: stop hoping for a detector, and keep an archive of your research and a journal of your progress instead. Drafts, sources, version history. The process becomes the proof.

I couldn’t agree more.

The process is already there. You just have to keep it.

If you write in a local-first tool like Obsidian, with your vault in Git and something like File Recovery or Time Machine on top, you already have what Daniel asks for. Every version of every note. When it changed, how much, in which order. My own vault has years of that history. My daily notes describe what I worked on each day. My weekly notes list what I published, and where the ideas came from. And most of it is public: https://notes.dsebastien.net. In addition, I recently improved the Time Machine plugin for Obsidian to provide more ways to look at past versions of my notes, side-by-side with the current one. That’s super useful, because it surfaces a very valuable but often hidden/ignored part of knowledge management: not only the current state of things, but the whole evolution over time!

I don’t publish my notes to prove anything to anyone. Writing is thinking, and it’s just how I learn, and how I grow. Making it all public has the benefit of serving others, which I find truly wonderful. I’m just applying the Feynman technique. By sharing my thinking, I also get to verify if my understanding is sharp enough.

Metadata: mark it at the source

There’s a second layer: metadata in the notes themselves.

Every note type in my vault has an ai_generated property. When my AI assistant drafts a note, that flag is set to true. Today, 357 notes in my vault carry it. That includes drafts of articles, research briefs, session summaries, and yes, the first draft of this very newsletter, which my ghostwriter assembles from my weekly notes before I rewrite it. The flag means one thing: a machine touched this first, look twice.

That’s useful to me, right now, without any external verification. It tells me which notes deserve attention before publishing. It tells me which notes I should re-read with a skeptical eye, because a model summarized a source I haven’t fully read myself. And it keeps me honest about how much of my thinking is actually mine.

🎁 A Free 62-Page Guide, and a Page for Everything Free

Last month I published a long deep dive article: The Complete Guide to Obsidian Automation. Many of you asked for a version you could read offline. So here it is: the guide is now a free 62-page PDF, from your first template all the way to AI agents running on your vault.

The complete map of Obsidian automation, as a free 62-page PDF you can read offline, annotate, and keep.

What it is

The PDF edition of The Complete Guide to Obsidian Automation. Obsidian automation is three layers stacked on one idea: your notes are plain files, so anything can operate on them. The guide covers all three layers, in the order to adopt them:

Part I: the mental model. Your vault as an operating system for knowledge, the four stages of automation, and the biggest mistake (automating too early).

Part II, Layer 1: automation inside Obsidian. The seven jobs plugins should do for you: notes that are born correct (see Templater plugin for Obsidian), capture under three seconds, filing you never think about, formatting, queryable notes, state machines in frontmatter, buttons and commands.

Part III, Layer 2: automation around the vault. Git, the command line, REST and MCP, URIs, backup and sync, scheduled jobs, publishing pipelines, ingestion, attachments, OS-level automation, mobile, batch operations.

Part IV, Layer 3: AI agents on the vault. Instruction files, skills, hooks, MCP, multi-agent workflows, agents on a schedule, vault maintenance that runs itself, and the risks.

Part V: a real setup. How a vault of 20,000+ notes runs with an AI assistant living inside it.

Part VI: where this goes. The AI operating system, why it compounds, and the adoption path to start today.

Plus a FAQ and the full list of plugins and tools mentioned. The living version stays on the blog and is updated as the tooling evolves; the PDF is the edition you keep.

Who it is for

Obsidian users with a working vault who feel the daily friction: the same manual steps every day, notes that drift out of shape, ideas that never get filed, and no clear picture of where AI fits without handing their notes to a chatbot. Beginners should start with the free Beginner’s Guide to Obsidian first, then come back. Everything in the guide is pre-built in the Obsidian Starter Kit.

How to get it

Landing page (enter your email, the PDF arrives by email): https://www.dsebastien.net/free-complete-guide-to-obsidian-automation

Store page (free download): https://www.store.dsebastien.net/product/obsidian-automation-guide/

Online version: https://www.dsebastien.net/the-complete-guide-to-obsidian-automation/

Subscribing also adds you to DeveloPassion’s Newsletter (unsubscribe anytime).

🔗 Automate Your Obsidian Vault, From Templates to AI Agents

And while I was at it, I finally created a page I should have written months ago: a single place listing everything I give away for free. When someone buys the Everything Knowledge Bundle, or joins the Knowii Community as a Knowledge Master, they get a dozen products and a ton of information at once. Courses, kits, workshops, guides, tools, etc. And that can be overwhelming: too many doors, no idea which one to open first.

That’s why I built Knowii Learning Paths: https://learn.knowii.net

Pick what you own, get the order to go through it.

Pick what you own, and you get a step-by-step path: phases, time estimates, where each thing lives (your Gumroad library or a Knowii space), what to do first, what you can skip, and checkboxes that remember your progress. There’s a path for every purchase: the bundle, each Knowii tier, each Obsidian Starter Kit variant, the Knowledge Worker Kit, the courses, every workshop, Knowii Voice AI, etc.

The site also explains how the Knowii community is organized, and has a help page for access questions.

If you own anything from me, go check your path. And tell me if something’s missing or wrong. This is v1.

🔗 Start here · Knowii Learning Paths

📦 Obsidian Starter Kit v5: Two More Weeks

In the last edition, I said mid-September. I’m going to retract that, and I want to explain why.

The v5 release is actually ready: the kit, the release notes, the migration guide, the launch article.

What’s not ready is me. My wedding is next week. A release like this one generates questions, edge cases, and “it doesn’t work on my machine” emails during the first days, and I want to be fully available to answer them. Shipping v5 and then disappearing for a week would be a disservice to my customers, and I don’t want that.

So: v5 will land about two weeks from now, once I’m back and rested.

What changed in the kit since last time, beyond what I described in the previous edition:

Quick Actions: a one-click layer built into the kit with Meta Bind, QuickAdd and Templater scripts. It wraps things OSK could already do (plugin commands, templates, captures) into buttons and hotkeys, so the most common operations stop requiring the command palette. Meta Bind and QuickAdd do the work; the scripts ask the OSK plugin where each note type lives, so nothing is hardcoded. It comes in three parts:

The OSK Quick Actions note, meant to be pinned in a sidebar. As the name implies, it provides easy access to different actions: create a typed note, capture to today (a task, a note, something done, something you’re excited about, a discovery, a link, a challenge, something you’re grateful for, etc), open today’s note or the Life Tracker, roll over yesterday’s tasks, open your actions or your time views, jump to the current week, month, quarter or year, create the missing period notes, and the maintenance row: validate, retype, move to the type’s folder, open the Time Machine. Buttons clicked from the sidebar act on the note you were last working in

Quick actions in periodic notes: ◀ ▶ navigation and the capture row in every daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly note, so the actions are right where you are

New Commands: every quick action can be invoked through the Obsidian Command Palette, and you can also bind those to hotkeys

The Quick Actions note:

The OSK Quick Actions note, pinned in the sidebar.

In daily notes:

The Quick Actions rows in a daily note.

I recorded a short video of the “Quick task” action to show how efficient it is:
https://medium.com/media/f222dfdba45e132a8bd94cd5a4503d64/href
The whole thing is documented in the user guide, with a tutorial on creating your own buttons.

Activities and Ideas joined the Action System. Activities are ongoing areas of responsibility (akin to the Areas in PARA) with no end date (writing this newsletter is one). Ideas are candidate actions captured before they become a goal, a project or a task. I migrated 37 activities and 65 ideas in my own vault, and it feels good because it’s much clearer this way.

Time budgets and lifecycle dates on every action system type: how many minutes a week you want to give something, when it was committed, started, completed, …

The bundled OSK plugin and osk-cli evolved a lot too. Status configuration, automation rules, template sections configuration, validate and retype commands, object properties. More details in the Lab section below

Periodic notes with one shape at every level: intentions at the top, captures in the middle, a Closing section at the bottom. Same section names in daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly notes. The old “Last Week Review” block at the top of the weekly note is gone; it was last week’s closing, so it now lives at the bottom of last week

Meeting notes slimmed down: decisions and actions are properties now, the body is Participants and Minutes, and the Meetings view shows both columns

Many improvements to the included Obsidian Bases

A new Foundation page on customizing the kit: what each change touches, what to adapt per plugin, the pitfalls, and the eject button if you want to leave the OSK structure behind, along with the pros and cons of doing so

The price reminder still stands: OSK’s price will go up when v5 ships. Buying now means v5 as a free update at today’s price, with the lifetime upgrades offer still in place.

🔗 Obsidian Starter Kit

🎥 Knowii Video AI: It Works

Two editions ago, Knowii Video AI was a plan. It’s now an app I can actually record with. Still rough. Still tons to do. But the core loop is there:

An early recording session, camera and screen together.

The workflow is smooth; Stop talking and the clip stops. Talk again, and a new clip starts. Finish the session and the transcript can be generated easily. Edit the transcript to edit the video. And there’s a ton more.

The part I’m most excited about is that AI Agents can drive all of it through the included MCP server. Every feature has to work on three surfaces: the window, the command line, and the agent.

I still need a few things before I use it for real videos (the first-run setup, better messages, a few window gaps). But I’m close. And I can’t wait to record the OSK v5 launch video with it 🔥

The Lab 🧪

🧩 Obsidian Starter Kit Plugin Evolution

The Obsidian Starter Kit plugin for Obsidian evolved a lot. I released twelve versions in the past week. Here’s what’s coming with OSK v5:

Status configuration per note type. Each note type now declares its status property, its values, which values count as done, the outcome of each. Skills, boards and the CLI read that configuration instead of hardcoding values.

Automation rules. This is something I wanted to build for a while. A note type can now carry rules: when the status becomes X, stamp date Y. When a creation is published, flip published to true. When a book moves to Reading, stamp date_started; when a note has been done for N days, move it to its archive folder.

Headings. The plugin now knows the headings of every note type, with a description per heading. Rename a heading in the settings and the template is rewritten. Or just edit the template, and the plugin also knows. The osk-cli sections <type> exposes the structure, which is very useful for AI: my skills now ask the CLI where the Done section is instead of hardcoding "## ✅ Done".

Note type sections, visible in the plugin settings.

This is the next level. Having clearly defined note types and property schemas was already a huge win for my system. Now, having clearly defined body structures is even nicer.

Validate and Retype as commands. I’ve added various commands that act on the note you were last editing: validate & fix it if needed, validate a complete folder, validate the whole vault, recognize the note type, insert missing sections, rename the note to respect the type’s pattern, etc. And I’ve also added an easy way to “retype”; change a note’s type, migrating all the metadata and structure without losing anything. The retype action also moves the note where it belongs. And all of that is also available through the API, MCP and the Command Line Interface (CLI).

⏳ Time Machine: Side by Side

The Time Machine plugin for Obsidian now has a side-by-side view: open a note as it was in a pane next to the live editor, so you can look at previous versions on the left while the note stays editable on the right.

🔗 Time Machine releases on GitHub

🔌 Agentic Resource Discovery Improvements

Agentic Resource Discovery: subagent definitions are now a second catalog next to skills. I’ve also improved hybrid search using local embeddings. In my own setup, replacing my skill registry with the Agentic Resource Discovery search cut my session boot from 98K to 48K tokens. Half the context, same capabilities.

Knowii Voice AI Improvements

Knowii Voice AI: A big batch is waiting for the next release: AI post-processing of your dictation (an optional cleanup pass through a local or cloud model, dictation only, off by default), light and dark themes, auto-submit after paste, trailing space after paste, GPU support for Whisper, improved audio capture quality. Also, about about 3x faster inference on Vulkan and fast models loading. Again, I’m just waiting for the wedding to be over before I release the new version!

🧠 Tip of the Week

If you file weekly notes by year and week, use the ISO week-year. Not the calendar year.

Two weeks ago I found a bug that had been in my setup for a long time. My daily notes are filed under <year>/<week>. The week number was ISO (correct), but the year was the calendar year. Those two don't agree around New Year: December 30, 2024 is week 1 of 2025. So every year, one week got split across two folders.

Worse: my Periodic Notes weekly format used locale-based week tokens, where the week starts on Sunday. So every single Sunday resolved to the following week. Oops…

🧠 Quotes of the Week

Making a good decision is about the process, not the outcome — Shane Parrish

If writing is thinking then what happens if AI is doing the writing and reading — a Hacker News commenter

The best talent has proof of work, not memorisation — Tim Denning

Until Next Time

Thanks for reading.
