Gary Vaynerchuk’s Thoughts on “Hustle Porn” (Told Through Memes)

My team put this article together and I wanted to share it with you all :) Enjoy!

—

A lot of people misunderstand Gary’s message on “hustling” and “working your face off.”

Ultimately, Gary’s message is about being happy with your life and getting to a place where you don’t feel the need to complain. Not working yourself to the point of burnout or unhappiness.

In this article, we wanted to create some more context on what he actually means vs what people think it means. And we felt like doing it with memes ;)

What People Think Gary Means: “If You’re Not Working 15–18 Hours a Day, You’re Not Doing Enough With Your Life.”

What Gary Actually Means:

If you’re not complaining, Gary’s got nothing to say to you!

The advice he’s giving is really just for people who are unhappy, complaining, or talking a big game but aren’t backing it up with their actions. Ultimately, your actions need to map to your ambitions.

If you want to build a business that “funds” your lifestyle, you’re aspiring to a top 1% life… which means it’s going to take a ridiculous amount of hard work to get there. It’s going to take a long time of paying your dues — that might mean giving up leisure after your day job or getting up a little earlier than you normally do.

But if you’re watching Netflix and playing video games all day and you’re genuinely happy, that’s awesome

Happiness is the ultimate ROI, not money. Do you

What People Think Gary is Saying: “You Should All Be Trying to Work As Much as I Work.”

What Gary Actually Means:

Gary loves the process of building businesses, which is why he set a goal to buy the New York Jets, a multi-billion dollar sports team. DailyVee is just Gary’s way of documenting his journey of getting there as an entrepreneur.

But Gary’s an extreme personality. You shouldn’t try to imitate Gary’s work ethic, or even start your own business unless you’re self-aware about who you are and what you want.

What People Think Gary is Saying: “It Takes Years and Years to be Successful. You Shouldn’t Give Up On Your Business.”

What Gary Actually Means:

Entrepreneurship is “cool” right now, and there are so many people who are trying to be entrepreneurs who aren’t cut out for it.

Not everyone should be spending years trying to build a business — a lot of people just aren’t talented enough or “cut out” for the pressure and stress that comes with entrepreneurship.

And that’s okay! It’s a lot more fun to go all in on what you’re good at than being delusional about your skills.

What People Think Gary is Saying: “I Have to Sacrifice Sleep and Family Time to be Succesful.”

What Gary Actually Means:

If you need 7–8 hours of sleep a night, that’s totally cool. You don’t need to sacrifice sleep to build your business or side hustle.

It’s not about the time you spend sleeping, commuting to work, or spending time with family. It’s about what you’re doing in the hours when you’re not doing those things. And if you do want to spend more time relaxing during your day, that’s great!

Just be aware that you’ll be leaving business upside on the table, which could be completely fine depending on your ambition.

We’ve seen a growing number of articles and comments talking about Gary’s points of view on hustle and hard work, so we wanted to take some time to address those concerns and create context around what he’s actually saying.

Ultimately… Gary’s not trying to push anyone to live a life they don’t want to live. He’s just putting “pressure” on people to stop complaining and get to a happier state of mind

Thank you all for reading and following Gary’s journey!

— Team GaryVee

Please help us spread this message by sharing this article on Twitter!

Gary Vaynerchuk’s Actual Thoughts on Hustle was originally posted on GaryVaynerchuk.com on 12/13/2018.

This story is published in The Startup, Medium’s largest entrepreneurship publication followed by +399,714 people.

Subscribe to receive our top stories here.

Gary Vaynerchuk’s Actual Thoughts On Hustle (Told Through Memes) was originally published in The Startup on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Society puts a lot of pressure on people in their 20s to “figure out” their lives.

The reality is, most 57-year-olds don’t even have their lives figured out. There’s no reason to put pressure on yourself so early in the process.

Here are a few things to remember as you’re navigating life in your 20s:

1. Take The Biggest Risks Of Your Life.

Going “conservative” in your 20s is something you really, really should debate. Especially if you aren’t in debt.

When you’re this young, the number one thing you should focus on is executing on the most high risk behaviors of your life.

The biggest reason that so many people become unhappy is that they play life in “reverse.” They go for the safe and practical job right out of school, and they buy expensive stuff to impress their parents and friends. Then, it becomes less practical to quit their job because they’re “chained down” with expenses.

Instead, make high risk moves around the thing that will make you the happiest.

This is exactly when you should go live in Bali for a year. This is exactly when you should try and become Beyonce.

This is exactly when you go on the “offense.”

2. Don’t be Afraid to Take a $12 / Hour Job Over a $25k / Year Job.

I’m a big believer in working for cheap (or free) for the person you want to try and become.

Getting “closest to the sun” is where all the leverage is.

Here’s what I mean by that:

If you go and work for someone you admire and do an incredible job, they could “put you on” and change the course of your entire career. For example… if you admire Alex Rodriguez or Chance the Rapper and you had the chance to run their social media for $12 / hour, there’s no question that would be be better than a job that pays $52,000.

Imagine what it would be like to be known as the guy or girl behind A-Rod’s social or Chance the Rapper’s videos.

Be humble, patient, strategic, and stop caring what your living situation looks like to people “on the outside.” You’ll set yourself up for an incredible future.

3. Do it Because You Enjoy the Process Not Because You’re Chasing Results.

When I look for talent, I’m obsessed with finding people who love the process — not the stuff that the game “buys” you.

If you’re focused on the cars, the shoes, and “posturing” to your friends, you’re finished. If you’re building a business or navigating your career based on what’s going to get you the off-whites, private planes, spa treatments, or jewelry, you’re not going to have a long career.

So many people in their 20s are taking jobs that pay a few thousand dollars more just so they can buy more stuff. Don’t get me wrong, I have empathy for people in debt. But a lot of people are taking these jobs because they’re trying to live up to the expectations of their parents and friends.

I look for people who “can’t breathe” if they’re not doing their art because those are the people who are going to win long term. For me, business is my art. For you, it might be design, performing on stage, or something else.

Whatever it is, be that person who’s obsessed with their craft and would be doing it for “free” no matter what.

4. Don’t Stress About Finding the Answer “What Should I Do With My Life?”

If you don’t know what that “craft” is yet, that’s okay.

It blows me away how much pressure we put on people in their 20s and early 30s to have their entire lives figured out.

Of course you don’t know what you want to do yet — you haven’t even lived yet!

Now’s the time to be massively risk-oriented and try everything you want to try. There’s no “wrong” move you can make. If you genuinely want to spend every minute working like I did, great. If you want to travel to Bali or work in a vineyard in Tasmania, great.

Now is the time to go have different experiences and try different jobs until you find one you like.

5. Stand Up to the People You Love and Have Tough Conversations.

If there’s one piece of advice you take away from this article, it would be this:

Have the conversations you need to have with the people you’re closest to.

Tell them the truth. Tell them how you feel about everything — about what you want to do, where you want to work, your insecurities, how you feel about their expectations, and everything else.

It will absolutely change your life. Even if they get angry and react poorly, their level of respect for you will be enormous.

It saddens me that so many people allow the opinions of their parents and their friends to hold them back in their careers, or worse, push them to make decisions that have terrible long term consequences (like taking on massive debt).

If you don’t have the tough conversation with them now, you’ll resent them in the long term because you lived your life for them and not yourself.

6. Stop Debating. Start Executing.

I implore you to not worry about the current judgement being deployed on you.

One of the biggest reasons I’m happy and can navigate my life so quickly is because I believe in one thing more than anything else:

The truth will play out in the end.

It’s not that I’m right or will be right, it’s that the truth plays out regardless. It’s pointless try to prove those around you wrong with your words.

Stay patient, and do it with your actions.

Wish more people in their 20s understood this message. Share this article on Twitter if you got value from it!

Here are some examples of the kind of messages you may see on Instagram and/or other platforms:

These are fraudulent messages — please do not click any links or send any information to any Gary account on Telegram.

Keep reading for other scams and fraudulent messages you may see on other platforms.

Hey VaynerNation, this is a quick message from Team Gary Vee:

It has been brought to our attention that there are numerous people trying to impersonate @garyvee and scam people by offering illegitimate services in exchange for money. Scammers are often sending private messages over social media, email, text pretending to be Gary. They often use Gary’s name and photo to falsely endorse get-rich-quick schemes.

Here’s an example of a scam email we’ve seen being shared:

Although this email looks like it came from a legitimate VaynerMedia email address, it’s fake. Gary will NEVER send an email promoting investment advice like this, get-rich-quick schemes, or offering illegitimate services in exchange for money.

As you can see in this example above, this person has replied in the thread underneath an original tweet from Gary. They have even used Gary’s exact profile picture as well as a very similar (but incorrect) spelling of his name.

If you look closely, however, you’ll see that the “@“ or username is not Gary (@garyvee), the account is unverified, and the tweet includes a suspicious link. When you see something like this, please DO NOT click the link. Unfortunately there are scammers leveraging the trust that Gary has with his community to bait people into clicking phishing links that will steal money and cryptocurrency, NFTs, and personal information. Again, if you are uncertain about the validity of a link, do not click. If you come across a Twitter account pretending to be Gary, please report it.

Followers who post/comment on Gary’s social media are being specifically targeted in private channels by people impersonating Gary. The scammers use quite convincing methods to try and extract personal information and cash from the targeted individual. The following scam has been circulating for quite some time — the scammer posing as Gary tries to extract money from BITCOIN opportunities and ask the individuals to invest in. If you see this scam, please report it.

Gary’s personal accounts are all verified and the team accounts will be posted below — we will not send personal messages regarding investments, charity donations or any other from these accounts. If you are contacted by somebody on social media pretending to be Gary please report them through the social media platform that the incident is happening on.

Most social media platforms do a speedy job of taking down fake accounts, so we urge you to report from your end as step 1.

We are doing everything we can to report scammers and get fake sites taken down as soon as possible. I listened to your content every day as I got ready to go to my job that I absolutely hated. It was the first job I took out of college, so I figured that was what the real world was like. You just have to suck it up and keep your head down to get money and get the things that you want. It was your advice that told me to pounce on the things that I want and not just wait for them to come to me.

After a year of misery, I negotiated my wages so that I work a quarter of the time but make double the wages (making half the money, but saving 75% of the time). I spent the remainder of my time teaching myself to code. I know what you’ve said about this line of work and its future, but it really is my dream job.

After many months, I still hated the job so much. It happened out of luck that at the same time cryptocurrency did well for me. I took your advice to not listen to what my family says about my decisions and I went to travel the world for what started off as a few months of curiosity in Thailand and became a year of amazement around the world.

During that year, I learned to code more and connected with more coders who were traveling the world. I became more positive and happier too. When I came back, my friends said they noticed the positive difference in my personality.

After a year, I finally became sick of traveling and returned home with the goals of getting a high paying job and recovering from my journey. I finally got the job offer two days ago to make more money than I had ever made in my life, doing something that would allow my skills to grow further.

Because I took my own path, said “fuck it”, and went with the idea that I am young enough to bounce back from mistakes, I quit the job that I hated, saw every place in the world that I’ve ever wanted to see, made a ton of money to support myself as well as spoil my friends and family, and have ultimately made my Jewish grandmother very proud of me (which is the end goal, really).

I now feel like I got my shit together for the first time in my life and I am happier and feel more alive than ever before in my life. I attribute it to your advice and guidance from the web.

Thank you so much.

So much love,

I got emotional after reading this email.

Hope it inspires you to get out there and find your own happiness :)

Garage Sale Flipping: How I turned $75 in Pins and Hot Wheels into $1,000+

Huge and exciting day for me as I released episode 2 of my new series, Trash Talk!

Trash Talk is a new series where you can actually watch me go garage sailing, pick out items, negotiate with sellers, and find what the items are worth on eBay.

People always ask me why.I go garage sailing on the weekends.

They ask me why — as a CEO who runs a $150 million company — I would hit up a yard sale to buy a $3 product to flip for $40 on eBay when I could be doing something else for “higher ROI.”

For me, the answer is pretty clear:

It’s about happiness.

I get a bigger high when I find a great product on eBay than when I close a multi-million dollar deal for VaynerMedia. That’s why I continue to do it.

Another reason I do it is to show people how practical it is to make an extra $100 — $1000 / week by re-listing garage sale items on eBay. For a lot of people, that’s a meaningful amount of money that could help them pay for rent or cover other expenses.

In this article, I’ll break down the highlights of Episode 2. I wanted to write a blog post alongside the release of episode 2 to go more in-depth on the tactics.

I’ll show you what I bought, what it’s selling for, and the entire process “behind-the-scenes” when it comes to actually listing these items on eBay and selling them — plus some more insights from my brother-in-law, team member, and garage sale partner Justin below ;)

Let’s get into it.

Turning 10 cents into $30

We had an incredible start at the first yard sale we went to in Closter, NJ.

Here’s what we got:

The first item was a Thundercat action figure. Thundercat was a cartoon show from the 1980s. I snagged a 1987 action figure for 10 cents, and found out later that it was selling for $35 on eBay.

To find what your products are worth, just search the item on eBay under the “sold listings” filter

Sometimes when you’re out garage sailing, it’s tough to find the exact product names to search on eBay — you just gotta hack your way around it. For this particular item, I knew to search “thundercat” because of the “LJN” logo underneath (LJN is the toy company that manufactures Thundercats).

I listed it later for $30.99.

I also got a Hard Rock Cafe mug for 50 cents, which I listed later for $9.99.

But the biggest find was a giant box of Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars I snagged for $10. The condition of the cars was pretty rough, but I felt like it would still be profitable since there’s a lot of nostalgia around Hot Wheels.

Walking away from overpriced sellers

One important thing to be aware of is that not all garage sale items are worth buying.

At the second garage sale, a lady had some incredible action figures and toy cars from Disney, but wanted $2 a piece. I wanted to buy the whole 30-car bag for $2.

And as much as I like negotiating, I don’t like insulting. There was a pretty big delta between what she wanted ($60) and what I wanted to pay ($2) so I just walked away.

Flipping a $2 board game for $22.99

At the third garage sale, I went in looking video games and coffee mugs, but ended up getting something different.

I got a “Ticket to Ride: Europe” board game for $2 (negotiated the seller down from $3).

I looked it up under “Sold Listings” when I got back to my car, and saw it going for anywhere between $20 — $40.

I ended up listing it for $22.99.

Making mistakes and learning the game

After wrapping up our first 6–7 sales in Closter, we headed over to Madison, NJ to hit up a few more garage sales.

One thing you quickly learn is, not every item is gonna sell for as much as you expect on eBay.

I bought a Star Wars item for $2 and thought it was going to be insanely valuable. I handed it to my assistant Tyler to look it up while I went to another sale.

Turns out it was selling for way less than I thought.

It’s just part of the process. But the profits you get from the winning items will still make it worth it.

Early birds get worms, but smart snails can get scores

People think they have to be early to profit from garage sale flipping, but a lot of my best “finds” happened later in the day. You just have to be smart about what you buy.

I ended up getting another giant box of Matchbox and Hotwheels cars for $40, plus another vintage box for $5.

After checking on the app, I found out just one of those Matchbox items was already worth $15 — $16.

I also bought 245 pins for $20 total which will end up going for $200 — $500, depending on whether I sell it in bulk or individually.

Here some other items I snagged as we closed out the day:

Thomas the Train toys for $5. I bought a ton of Thomas the Train items for $5 at 1:07pm. The case alone was worth $20 — $30.

Cat in the Hat stuffed animal for $0.50. I paid 50 cents for a Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat toy that I relisted for $14.99.

Bambi toy for $0.50. Another incredible find for under $1 that I relisted for $13.99.

All in all, I spent about $100 this past weekend, and there’s no doubt in my mind that these items will bring in well over $1000 from eBay.

Smart snails beat early birds ;)

Now… I want to hand it over to Justin. He and my team helped me organize and list all the Matchbox cars and Olympic pins on eBay.

I’ll let him talk to you about how we did it.

Hi, Justin here!

I work on influencer partnerships on Team Gary at VaynerMedia. I’ve worked with Gary for 16 years at Wine Library & VaynerMedia, and I’m a huge fan of the flip game. I’ve been flipping with Gary since 2002.

Our team and I helped Gary re-organize all the toy cars and pins and list them on eBay.

Here’s how we did it:

Step 1: Find out what the item has sold for

Once you’ve got your item from a garage sale, the first step is to figure out what similar items have been selling for on eBay.

Best way to do this is by typing the item name in eBay search, then scrolling down and clicking “sold items.” Then filtering by highest cost sold for.

For example, we had an Orange Hot Wheels Redline truck that we saw being sold for anywhere between $39 — $64 (in similar condition).

A couple of important things to pay attention to when finding similar products are the color and condition.

Step 2: List a starting bid

Based on what the item is selling for and condition compared to others sold, list your own “starting bid.” You’ve options to set a reserve price or have a “Buy it Now” option. We don’t use these options.

For our Orange Hot Wheels pickup truck, we iisted it for $49.99 plus shipping.

We list in auction format, where buyers can make bids. Now eBay has a new feature which allows buyers to make an offer during the auction. Depending on the sellers settings, buyer can make offers any cost below the current starting bid or even significantly above the starting bid price. You receive offers over the current bid at anytime during the auction.

You can also choose to accept the “best offer” as well. When you add the best offer option, you’re basically inviting buyers to negotiate with you. If you have an auction along with the “best offer” feature, buyers will be able to make an offer while you start receiving bids.

Step 3: Wait ‘till it sells

List it on eBay for the price that similar products have been selling for.

Be patient. Wait till it sells.

Collect your cash.

Repeat ;)

Garage sale flips are an incredible way to make an extra few hundred (or a thousand) bucks on the side every single weekend.

Feel free to DM me at @JustinNovello if you have any questions about eBay, flipping, or garage sailing!

If you found this article useful, hit the “clap” button below!

This article was originally posted on GaryVaynerchuk.com with the title Garage Sale Arbitrage: Finding Products You Can Buy Cheap and Sell High.

1. Figure yourself out

Self awareness the biggest keys to my success.

There are SO many people out there who are working jobs they hate because they haven’t found their passion.

It’s why so many people struggle with working 18 hours a day. If you don’t love what you do, of course it’s going to be hard to put in work. It’s hard to spend time doing something you’re not excited about.

One way you can do this is by asking the five people that you know best.

You can split them into two categories: People who you deeply love, and people who you’re close with.

Then, ask them to tell you what they think about your skills, abilities, and weaknesses.

I genuinely believe that collecting data from the “market” after creating an atmosphere where people can be safe with you. For example, someone might not want to be totally honest with you because they’re afraid it’ll hurt your feelings.

But you need that honesty to find out what you’re good at.
https://medium.com/media/78f01b34a1be3d46ebd8fc4fec572c5b/href
2. Do what you love

Everything starts with yourself. If you’re self aware, you’ll know exactly how to navigate your life.

Look yourself in the mirror, and ask yourself: “What do I want to do every day for the rest of my life?”

Do that.

So many people are struggling with the thought of monetizing their passion. But no matter what it is, I promise that can find a way to monetize.

Doesn’t matter if you love the Smurfs, Spongebob, Elf, or anything else.

3. Put in the work

To be great, I think you have to fight.

My dad came to the US with no language skills and zero dollars. We lived in a studio apartment the size of his office with multiple family members. He got a stock job for 2 bucks an hour in New Jersey, learned English, saved all his money, worked 18 hours a day, bought a store, had a business, and did all this in a 5-year period with no base.

I very much think that my success as a product is in large part because I’m willing to outwork people. The fact that I’ve been working 19 hours a day every day for the last 20 years is easy for me.

Let’s say I played Roger Federer right now in tennis. Let’s say I had the greatest tennis racket ever made, and he had a John McEnroe 1974 tennis racket. He could still beat me — just like I’m beating salespeople that have every salesforce, every tool, every feature, and went to every sales conference.

I’ll beat them every day of the week because I have talent, and I’ve worked to hone my craft.

Stay humble and work hard on your craft, and you’ll see some great things happen.

4. Don’t dwell on mistakes (everyone else is already doing that for you)

People love to ask me about mistakes I’ve made in the past.

The truth is, I’ve always struggled in answering that question.

It’s not that I get nothing wrong. I get many things wrong.

For example, I was a breakout YouTube star in 2006. Then, I decided that the right strategy was to leave YouTube completely and go to Viddler because Viddler offered me equity in their company. Even though the attention was on YouTube, I moved over to Viddler because I was tempted by short term economics.

I could’ve had millions of more subscribers than I do now on YouTube if I had just stayed the course.

Here’s another one: I passed on investing in Uber twice in the angel round.

Even though the founder Travis Kalanick is one of my best friends, I passed on investing. And that mistake cost me hundreds of millions of dollars.

So I make mistakes all the time.

I’m adjusting my strategy at VaynerMedia everyday because of a mistake I made the prior year.

It’s just that I can’t recall my mistakes once they happen.’

I just don’t care about my mistakes everybody else cares about my mistakes.

If you’re judging yourself for your own mistakes you’ve already lost.
https://medium.com/media/d989f27de397570b2c6c1fc35fd1c4f0/href
5. Be 100% accountable

What a lot of people don’t understand is, accountability sits very close to happiness.

When you blaming someone else, you feel like you’re not in control. You feel helpless, like there’s nothing you can do about your situation.

It’s why I blame myself for everything. I think everything is my fault.

If an employee turns out to be toxic, I hired that person. If an employee messes up, I created the process they’re following.

So many of you are pointing fingers at other people — your parents, your environment, your teachers, or where you grew up.

Of course, there are a lot of bad things that can happen to people. People get abused, people get killed, that’s real.

But for 95% of people, it’s about mindset.

Blame everything on yourself, and you’ll be stunned how happy you become.

6. Be grateful right now

What I told you this was the last day of your life? What if I told you you’d die this week?

Would you complain about your crap job or that test you don’t want to take?

I doubt it. You’d go much higher level thinking.

You need to understand that if you’re not pumped right now, if you’re not looking forward to it, then your game is broken.

Look… don’t get me wrong. I respect practicality.

You got to go through school because your parents want to. You’ve got to pay your rent. You got student loans. I get it.

But think about it: it’s incredible that you’re even alive. Your mom and dad could have had sex a couple of minutes later, and you wouldn’t even exist. You could’ve ended up as a tree, or a bird.

And not just that… we’re living in a world where there’s SO much more opportunity for us than there was for our parents or grandparents. The internet completely changed the game for everyone.

I just don’t get the mentality of complaining on Monday morning, or living for the weekends.

If you’re reading this, I implore you to take a step back and think about how awesome life actually is. Recognize that you can attack the world in a totally different way because you were lucky enough to be born during this era.

It’s unbelievable how good we actually have it.

So many people get caught up in day-to-day headaches, but in the macro, almost none of those things matter.

There are so many people in the world who have it much worse. There are people who have to live through the death of their children. There are people living in areas where there’s massive genocide going on. People out there are being persecuted and killed.

We don’t have real problems.

To me, nothing stands close to the health and well being of my family. That’s why it’s easy for me to be happy.

We’re very strong. We’re just being sold that we’re not. There’s just a lot of money in telling us that we’re not rich enough, pretty enough, or good enough.

I’m here to tell you that you’re the best. Go do sh*t.

7. Be a Practitioner

Most people are “headline readers.”

It’s especially true when it comes to social media. Most people out there are just reading headlines instead of going deep and really understanding each platform.

It’s why so many people have opinions when it comes to running ads on Facebook or Instagram, even though they’ve never actually tried running ads on those platforms.

Headline readers don’t think that B2B is happening on Facebook. Practitioners are exploiting it and making real money.

Headline readers think that you have to make short videos on social media. Practitioners are making 20, 30, 40 minute videos telling their story, and re-marketing to the people who want in.

The most important think you can do in life is be a practitioner. The ones who do will see disproportionate returns.

8. It’s better to be fast than to be perfect

Speed is 4 billion times more important than perfection.

Working faster is something that I don’t think people talk about enough.

At one point, I was debating with my Chief of Staff, Tyler, why I have three hours of down time in Boise, Idaho. We spent time deciding whether I should squeeze that into 15-minute phone call or fly back to NYC.

On a daily basis, I’m scrutinizing my 12 to 15 hour days, down to the second. I’m trying to fill in as much smart work into that bucket as possible.

Train yourself to do a little bit more in each hour than you normally would. Every day, add something. And get it all done.

Maybe that means scheduling non-negotiable time for a project if it’s that important. Maybe you need to work more odd hours.

In time, you’ll see that you’re doing much more in a day because you’re moving faster.

9. Don’t Care What Others Have

You don’t want the same things that your friends want. So why do you care what they have?

One of the biggest mistakes that people make is caring what other people have.

It’s the reason I don’t get caught in “keeping up with the Jones’s.”

When people ask me which entrepreneurs I look up to, my answer usually surprises them. I don’t answer with the cliche “Steve Jobs”, “Elon Musk”, or other billionaires.

I’m inspired by people in the dirt. Normal people in average jobs who decide that they want to build something for themselves. People who don’t “get” Facebook or Instagram, but are determined to figure it out. People who have humility to put in work in the face of judgement.

I don’t care if you have a Rolex. I don’t care if you’ve got a fancy house. I don’t care if you’re on vacation in Ibiza.

That’s why it’s easy for me to not get jealous of people.

If you’re worrying about other people’s accomplishments, that’s a losing formula.

10. Care more about your legacy than your bank account

The most successful entrepreneurs are driven by legacy over currency.

I’m obsessed with my legacy.

Every decision I make is predicated on the long term.

It’s not about what’s in my bank account. It’s about how many people will show up to my funeral.

If there’s one thing I hope becomes evident through my actions, it’s that I’m patient. I play the long game.

I want to have a big impact on the world, not just the people closest to me. I want my work to impact people. I want to make a real difference by allowing others to siphon my advice and become successful in their own pursuits. Whether as an entrepreneur or an artist or a lawyer or just a good, compassionate human behind.

I’m documenting my journey through my vlog, not just because I like that attention, but because I think it will be the ultimate resource for generations to come.

When you care about your legacy, it eliminates short-term financial aspirations. Caring about your legacy will still lead to long-term financial accomplishments, but it will happen in a far better way.

When you care what other people say behind your back, you start treating people like they matter. You start treating people with kindness and respect.

I genuinely believe that legacy should be something we push more of in the public conversation, not just in entrepreneurship, but in life.

10 Mental Shifts for Success in Business was originally posted on GaryVaynerchuk.com.

They appreciate their sacrifices.

But the truth is, your parents will be proud of you in the end no matter what.

You’re better off having problems with them now (in the short term) than for the rest of your life.

Having some disagreements with your parents in the beginning is better than having 60 years of problems from the resentment you’ll feel for them down the road.

Because that’s exactly what’ll happen if you live your life for them.

The following segment is an excerpt from AskGaryVee Episode 239: Charging Clients, Personal Brand or Business Brand & Advice to a Senior in College. The caller is a soon-to-be college grad who wants to spend 18 months going and doing what he wants to do. He wants to go discover himself, but his parents want him to get a safe job.

Check it out below:

Gary: Nate, how are you?

Nate: Dude, this is awesome!

Gary: You’re on the show baby.

Nate: Sweet! Okay so this is what my question is, and I think I’ve tweeted at you a couple of times. I’m a senior in college right now, and I’m finishing school because I want to give my parents and my grandparents [satisfaction].

Gary: It matters to them.

Nate: Yeah, it matters to them.

But how do I tell my parents that I just want to go do for 18 months?

Gary: So what, they want you to get the safe job after college, is that what you’re saying?

Nate: Yeah.

Gary: Just tell them. You’re a big boy. It’s time.

Nate: Okay. Okay.

Gary: I mean really. Listen, “easy for me to say” because your dad might punch you in the mouth, right? I get it. But here’s what’s interesting about a lot of my advice: It’s black and white. Like, you know your parents. Clearly your signals and nuances haven’t worked because they continue to want you to go down that path.

They’re not responding to you. They’re responding to what they grew up with and what they believe religiously. Right?

Nate: Yeah.

Gary: So that means the soft way of “hey, maybe… “ is not working, right?

Nate: Yeah, yeah that’s totally right. I keep getting these lectures from them.

Gary: It’s time for you to lecture your parents back. One of you is gonna be right. Let me promise you one thing: You really, really don’t want to be 47 and hate your parents.

Nate: Okay.

Gary: Because you’re not actually hating your parents, you’re hating yourself for not having the balls to do it. You want me to come over and have that talk with you?

Nate: (Laughs)

Gary: You think you got this?

Nate: Yeah, I’ll give them a call right after this.

Gary: Dude call them right now, and tweet me how it went. Let me pump you up a little bit more, I’ll be your corner man.

You start with “Mom / dad I love you. I’m 23 years old. I did [college] for you. Now I have to do something for myself. It’s high risk / high reward, but when you’re 23 that’s what you do.

I’m not going to be able to do this when I’m 47 and it’s not practical. It is practical, Mom / Dad for me to go 18 months and just do and discover myself. I’ve been doing the thing for you my whole life, and it’s time I do something for me. And if you can’t support me in that, that’s fine. I prefer you do, but I’ve got to do this as a man.”

Nate: Okay, yeah.

Gary: You don’t sound pumped enough. Talk to me, what are you scared of? This is why I’m doing a call-in show.

I’m telling you right now I don’t think you’re going to do it, and if you do do it, you’re going to do it half-assed. So help me understand what you’re scared of, tell me the truth.

Nate: Yeah well, it’s just because of the pedigree, the education, and how much they’ve sacrificed, I don’t want to disappoint them.

Gary: Let me help you here: Disappoint for 18 months, and then make them feel good again.

I love you for that. It means you’re appreciative and you love your parents. Tell them the truth, start with that.

Either 1) your parents love you and will respond to you, or 2) they love you but they’re so deep into their structure — it’s been religion their whole life that they’re incapable to break through and see it in a different way.

The problem is, it’s your life and it’s going to end up one way or the other.

Nate: Wow, yeah.

Gary: Like, you just gotta tell them “I don’t want to let you down” and remind them that it’s only 18 months. For the next 60 years, you can do the safe thing that makes them feel great. You just need 18 months, all you want is 18 months.

Nate: Yup, and I wrote down the date.

Gary: Sign a contract. Give yourself 18 months and then show them.

Nate: Okay.

Gary: Are you gonna do it now?

Nate: Yup, I’m going to hang up and call them right now.

Gary: Tell me, who’s more scared of this move?

Nate: My mom.

Gary: Go there man. Tell her, “Mom I love you with all my heart. I’m so thankful for your sacrifices, all I need is 18 months — I can’t live with this regret in my 30s, 40, or 50s because I’m going to crack and be a broken man. I need 18 months, and I promise if I can’t get traction, I’ll go wherever the hell you want me to work.

Navigating Family Pressure

So many kids out there are struggling with balancing the expectations of their parents with what they want for themselves.

The truth is, appeasing your parents is a long term vulnerability to your relationship. Because eventually, you will resent them.

It’s tried and true.

That might not feel “real” to you right now. But when you’re 29, when you’re 42, when you’re 61, you’ll realize that that the thing you were doing to make your parents happy is what ultimately will destroy your relationship with them.

If you need to have this conversation with your parents, I hope this article pushes you to go do it.

Check out the full clip below:
https://medium.com/media/b69227b4129e8cff569f44afa50f6051/href
Originally posted on GaryVaynerchuk.com

A lot of people feel anxiety when they hit their late 20s.

When you hit 27, 28, 29, or 30, more and more of your friends will be getting married. Having kids. Buying homes. On the surface, it can seem like they “made it.”

It’s easy to look at them and start auditing where you’re at in life, wondering why you haven’t made it yet.

It’s a tricky stage.

But the truth is, if you’re under 30, you’re just barely getting started.

A lot of people don’t understand how long life really is. Many young people today will end up living beyond 100 years old — with most of those years being good, healthy years. That means if you’re 30, you’ve got about 60–70 more years of execution left.

That means you could start from zero at 30 and do nothing right for the next two decades, you’d still have an entire lifetime worth of execution in front of you.

If you think about life like a football game, you haven’t even started the first quarter yet. You’re still playing the national anthem.

Even I feel like I’m just getting started, and I’m 42.

Here’s some advice I have on how you can get to that same mindset:

1. Redefine what it means to “win”

People get anxious and envious because they define the “game” in the same way the world tells them to define the game.

The reason I don’t get caught in “keeping up with the Jones’s” is because I don’t think buying more stuff is the indicator of success.

Let’s take LeBron James and Michael Jordan, for example. People love to debate who’s the “better” player. If you take it at face value, LeBron James has 3 NBA championships, but MJ has 6.

But what if you changed it up? What if you asked who’s the better human? What if you asked who’s done more for people? What if you asked who’s a kinder person?

LeBron could probably win those debates real fast.

The reason it’s easy for me to stay in my own head is because I’m able to contextualize. For me, success isn’t about having the most money or taking the most vacations. I’m playing a different game.

You don’t have to play by the rules that other people set. And when you create the game in your own head, you can rig it in your favor every time.

2. Develop Patience by Setting Bigger Goals

Too many people are trying to become millionaires by arbitrary ages like 25 or 30.

Goals like that lead to short term behavior. If you’re in a rush trying to become a millionaire by 30, you’ll take shortcuts and chase fast money — which means you won’t be doing the right foundational work for your future. Or worse, you’ll hurt your reputation with the things you try to sell.

And when you don’t hit your financial goals “by 30” (or whatever age you set), you’ll have to “reset” at 30 all over again.

Your self-esteem would start messing with your head.

Instead, my advice for 20-somethings is to go bigger.

My goals are to buy the New York Jets and become the most impactful entrepreneur of this generation. That’s going to take me my whole life.

That means I have to be patient. I have to go slower. I have to be more thoughtful and careful with my reputation.

And most of all, I have to work hard and enjoy the process — whether or not the results come.

3. Cut out Negative People

One of the most painful things for people in their late 20s to do is cut out negative people.

That might mean cutting off your friend you’ve been hanging out with since first grade. It might mean breaking up with a partner. It might mean talking to your mom less often.

A lot of people understand this logically, but they don’t really “get” it.

It’s a difficult thing to do.

But one of the fastest ways that I’ve seen for people to build confidence is by hanging out with winners who fire each other up — and cut out people who are dragging you down.

If you’ve read this far, watch this video. I think you’ll get a lot of value from it:
https://medium.com/media/6fd6e94b65358fb347461ee65bd06ba4/href
This article was originally posted on GaryVaynerchuk.com.

If you enjoyed this, clap it up below!

In the early part of 2017, I created the “2017 Flip Challenge” to push people to sell products on sites like eBay for profit.

So many of you complain about not having money to start a business, invest in ads, or build your personal brand. But at the same time, you have things laying around the house that you could sell online.

You could take the time you spend watching House of Cards or Game of Thrones, and use it to find out what products are worth on eBay. You could out what your clothes are worth. Find out what your old electronics are worth. Find out what toys are worth.

And you could use that data to start selling products you already have, flip stuff from thrift stores, or sell stuff you get for free off of Craigslist.

In one of my earlier DailyVee episodes, I drove to a thrift store in New Jersey with my brother-in-law Justin Novello, and showed you how we buy and sell stuff from garage sales. We’ve been doing this for years.

And even though it’s 2018, the flip game is still more real than ever.

So I want to eliminate every excuse people have for not getting started.

Today, Justin will show you how to start selling online ;)

—

Hi, I’m Justin!

I work on influencer partnerships on Team Gary at VaynerMedia. I’ve worked with Gary for 14 years at Wine Library, and I’m a big fan of the flip game :)

Before you can buy and sell stuff on eBay, you have to have a sense for what price you can sell your products for. The first part of this article will help you figure that out, the second part will show you how to use that data to start flipping on eBay.

Step 1: Filter for “sold listings” in search

If you want to see what a product is worth, start by searching the name in eBay search.

For example, you could search something like “Hulk hogan action figure”, scroll down, and hit “sold items.”

When you select “sold items”, eBay will sometimes automatically check the “completed items” box.

“Completed items” refers to auctions that have ended for that search — whether they sold or didn’t sell.

You can uncheck this box to only see items that have actually been sold. Or leave it checked to also see patterns on what didn’t sell.

Step 2: Sort by price range

On the results that show for “sold listings”, you can sort by price to see what products are selling for.

If you searched Hulk Hogan action figures, you’ll see there are a bunch of vintage ones that are selling for nearly $1000 (if you sort by “highest price”).

Same thing applies to limited edition products you can buy online. For example, people have flipped Gary’s “Clouds and Dirt” sneakers for $150-$200+:

You can do the same for products you find at thrift stores, garage sales, or sites like AliBaba.

And once you find something profitable, list it and collect your cash ;)

Happy flipping!

How to flip products on eBay (for free)

Once you’ve started selling stuff around the house, you can start flipping products from the internet.

But I can already hear the excuses popping up:

“How much will these products cost?”

“I don’t have any money.”

For a while, we’ve had to pander to these responses because it’s hard to find a way to get products without investing money up front.

But recently, Gary found a different way.

Here’s how you can make $1000 from zero:

1. Navigate to the “free” section on Craigslist

There’s a “free” section on the homepage of Craigslist. Navigate over to that.
https://medium.com/media/1a39511402cd247fc4ee348ce11677ad/href
2. Find a product

There are dozens of valuable things people out are giving away for free to get rid of them — things like chairs, beds, tables, and more.

3. Find out what it’s worth on eBay

Go through the steps above to see what similar products are selling for on eBay.

4. List it and wait until it sells

List it on eBay for the price that similar products have been selling for.

The free stuff you get on Craigslist are usually big items that people want to get rid of, so you can either list it for “local pick up only” or charge extra for shipping.

5. Once it’s sold, give it to the person who bought it.

Either by shipping it to them (if they paid extra for shipping), dropping it off to them, or having them come pick it up from you.

That’s it.

The internet has created so many ridiculous arbitrage opportunities. This is just one of them. Pick stuff up for free on Craigslist, list on a site like eBay, sell it, and make an extra few hundred bucks a week ;)

If you have any questions, feel free to DM me on Instagram at @JustinNovello :)

Check out “DailyVee 093: How to Make an Extra $100 This Weekend” to watch me and Gary buying and selling stuff from garage sales!
https://medium.com/media/43c12f8adbc0fbb8eb77538a90fc6669/href
This article was originally posted on GaryVaynerchuk.com.

This story is published in The Startup, Medium’s largest entrepreneurship publication followed by +368,675 people.

Subscribe to receive our top stories here.

How to Find Easy Products to Sell on eBay (even if you have no money) was originally published in The Startup on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

In this video excerpt, I talk with a young entrepreneur who’s early in the process of building his personal brand.

It’s advice that about 65% of my audience really needs on building a brand when you’re first starting out.

The video was one of my most popular ones of all time on YouTube. I think you’ll get a lot of value from it.

I hope you enjoy it!

Gary: How old are you?

Guest: 32

Gary: Perfect. You know the point now is to just take three years and just do and see what that tastes like.

Guest: Mmm.

Gary: I think one of the things that really works for me is I’m not worried about the micro but I think about the macro.

Like, what the fuck am I doing with you right now? There’s a lot more to do with showing up to the funeral than it has to do with the bank account. And you know what’s funny is, if you actually live your life like the funeral you end up making stuff from a bank account by accident.

It’s so crazy, when I think about like how I invested in Twitter and made all that money it was more about giving shit about my funeral. It was doing the right thing by a bunch of people which is what led me to go to the South by Southwest which led to me meeting the Twitter guys.

Guest: Yeah, like follow your passion, follow your bliss.

Gary: I think one of the things that people feel like struggle with is actually being very real with themselves.

Guest: What do you mean?

Gary: The difference between understanding who you are versus who you wish you were.

That’s something that I’m always very fascinated by when I have a meeting like this. Like, what kind of read do you have on yourself? I think I would struggle a lot if I didn’t really genuinely know who I was. And then once you know who you are you get more comfortable with what you’re up to.

So if I asked you right now — and I think it ebbs and flows when you’re 28, 32, when you’re 57 — if I asked you what you want to have happen, what would you say?

Guest:You mean like what would happen with my creative projects, or life?

Gary:Sure.

Guest:I want to have a life where I can create with a team. I want to put out content that affects people’s lives for the better. I want to travel with my man and have property, international property, and travel for fun. With also having time for work. But impacting people for the better in the process.

Gary:That’s cool.

So, what are you hoping [to accomplish] as you’re rolling up to this office? What are you hoping for, for real?

Guest:You know shit that I do not know. So I just want to pick your brain about a couple of key things, and ideally get in a place where I can hit you up.

Gary:OK. Let’s start with this. Listening to what you said, the first thing I will tell you is, don’t front. The number one mistake that people that aspire to the sentences that you just spit out of your mouth — the number one mistake they make is they try to over sell themselves because they think they need it to have people’s attention.

So let me give an example: Whether it’s life coach, inspirational figure, business coach, whatever form it takes… I think it’s much smarter for you to talk to the world about your process of going through this than the advice you think you should be giving them.

And that’s where people are struggling.

I got real lucky. I’m not sure that if the internet was around in its current form, that I would be a successful. Because at 22 and 23 I knew I was special, and I might have not been patient enough to first build a business first get experience.

I didn’t start talking to the world until I was 35. And I love to say to you to be patient. I’m not sure if I would have been.

I love to hear myself talk. And it’s nice, there’s nothing wrong with that. It just sounds bad. It’s funny. A lot of what I deal with now is being okay with not being politically correct — work life balance, cursing, etc.

Did you see that I was on the Breakfast Club?

Guest:Mhmm.

Gary:So I don’t know if you watched that interview or some of the content that I’ve been building on. I’m on a hot “no excuses” kick. I have a lot of female entrepreneurs. I have a lot of fans that are African-Americans. I spent a lot of time in that community my college years. I just think I’m giving the best advice to women and minorities in business today which is: Tough.
https://medium.com/media/6f056a7d10bd4eb37e40f2bddc32b851/href
And it’s crazy. In my body right now, it doesn’t feel great. It feels a lot better going somewhere else. The problem is, it’s the truth. The market just doesn’t care.

And what’s cool is when you actually say fuck it, you start betting on your strengths.

Do you know I was a businessman in a world where going to smart colleges was the only thing that mattered for businessmen? You were only a good businessman if you went to Harvard Business School, but then I reversed it. Like I’m like I’m a D and F student. I curse. I don’t dress the part. I do me. And then you know what happened?

The world came to me.

I would tell you that the best thing that you’re gonna walk out of here with is something that took me a long time to really realize: If you want to pull this off, and you want people listening to you, there’s only one thing. The truth.

It’s unbelievable how much that’s the reason I’m winning.

And I think it’s easier when you have a level of success and it’s harder when you’re climbing up the ladder. But I think that there’s a lot of people who, if they talk about the journey of the climb, could win.

I think it’s the best piece of advice I can give right now to a bunch of 20 to 30 year olds who feel that they should be talking to the world and bringing value. Talk about your journey of trying to find that voice and synthesize it properly.

The problem is, if a 30 40 50 year old is listening to your one minute rant video on Instagram, there’s a level of cynicism like “what do you know?” And I think that that’s fair. And look, you could just be a whiz kid about the world and that exists. But I do think there is a smarter way to context it. You know it’s like the difference between starting the sentence with “you should” vs “my intuition says.” Right now I can say “you should” because I built so much.

But if I was at 20, it would’ve needed to be “my intuition says…” And that changes everything. Or “when I look at…” Or “when I met with Gary today the takeaway I got was…”

Guest: What’s your perspective on cultivating relationships with people who not only believe in your ideas but can actually help point you to some funds? Because right now, all my friends are broke and trying to create some stuff. Like, I can’t borrow from your negative bank account.

Gary: The market will give you money. I’ll give you money. You just have to tell me what you want it against.

Finding money is not the problem. It’s really not. I’ll explain.

It’s how you’re looking at the world.

There’s things like AngelList and Kickstarter, etc. You know much harder it was for your mother to get money? Do you know that the 1973 version of you if he was sitting here would punch you in your fucking mouth? Because money is the last thing you have to worry about. AngelList, Kickstarter. The world can give it to you. You start a Kickstarter campaign. You know why most of them fail? Because most shit is wack. Because most stuff isn’t good. Because most people don’t give a fuck.

You can go to AngelList and hit up all the angel investors. People always say to me, “Gary, I can’t find money.” And then I tell them, “cool, I’ll give you money. What do you got?” And then they don’t know.

So tell me, what am I buying? Your brand? In perpetuity? There’s a really interesting time in the world right now, where art and science and business are colliding and they’re all very different.

So what am I buying? Buying into Gary Vee would’ve been a really good idea for a lot of people. But It wasn’t for sale, and I don’t even know how to sell that. Like what you sell? Like what, are you going to make 20 percent of my speaking fees, or my book deal, or my TV deal? I guess you could do that actually. I do think that plays out over time. But if I said to you cool, I got money for you. What do you say to me? What’s the business here?

Guest: So what I’m hearing from that is, create more content that allows people to see what they’re investing in?

Gary: No. What’s the container I’m putting my money in?

You can have unlimited content. You could have 4000 episodes of a podcast, and the greatest Instagram account I’ve ever seen, and the funniest Snapchat stories I’ve ever seen. Great.

That lets people know a bit more about you, but what’s the vessel?

So when I meet Fuck Jerry, or when I meet The Fat Jewish, I know they got attention on Instagram three years ago that really matters. But what am I investing in.

Oh, Fat Jewish you’re making a Rosay? Oh I can put twenty five thousand dollars into that and own 8 percent? Now you’ve given me something to put the container in. Oh Fuck Jerry you want to become BuzzFeed? You’re gonna build a website and have traffic and sell ads?

You got to come to me and say what am I investing in. You have to put your thing you have to put your thing into a container that’s investable. Nobody’s writing a check to a person. And then it gets hard because once you package it, you have to be able to explain it in business terms.

And that’s not necessarily what everybody does.

This is where it gets into partnerships. One thing I would tell you based on the vibe I’m picking up: If you and I both grew up in Milwaukee, you know I would’ve been a great partner for you because I could have been the business man to the art Maybe you are the business part but it’s not what you’ve been bringing up yet.

Guest: I don’t know, I’ve been in a position where I’ve had to do both right now.

Gary: Well look, you should be putting out content on a very regular basis. You should start a pillar show — vlogging I think it’s very fascinating. You know you should be doing Instagram stories and Snapchat stories at scale. You should be putting out 7 to 25 pieces of content on both those platforms a day.

Guest: A day?

Gary: And let me explain how. Don’t go fancy. Document versus create. It’s a big shift. When I say seven to 25 you say my God how do I produce seven to 25 meaningful things that will have me respected. Versus, document.

Guest: See, that’s the thing: Meaningful that will get me respected. I feel like anybody can put out shit. And I don’t want to put out shit.

Gary: But shit is subjective my man.

And I got good news for you. You’re fully in control.

Who makes the final call like productions? The producer? Great, you’re the producer my man.

But you gotta put out stuff. I still can’t believe how many people that live in New York don’t use New York people. Like, go back to your basketball roots, stand outside the garden right there and be like “what you think about the Knicks upcoming season?” One person gets into a thoughtful conversation, he was the former ballboy in 1957, it’s a nice story, and boom.

You see where I’m going?

Guest: Yeah.

Gary: People aren’t starting. They’re thinking. They’re pondering. They’re strategizing. They’re debating. The difference between people like me and the far majority is I’m just doing it all times. I’m doing so much that I’ve decided to have a man walk around with a camera and follow me because who knows when it’s going to happen.

And you know it’s so funny. I’m going to say to him, I want this whole thing cut. The whole thing. Like what I’m giving you right now, so many need right now. So I’m like fuck it let’s just put it out. Right.

Guest: So you’re saying you have to put out content all the time. I personally go through these periods of extreme creativity, and extreme chill. How do you motivate yourself? How do you continue this process of “go go go go go” and balance it with self care?”

Gary: I do what feels right to me. So if I got a check out for a week, I check out for a week. I don’t punish myself.

Guest: That’s really hard for me right now. Because I feel like I’m not doing enough. Like I’m not doing shit.

Gary: I agree.

Guest: (Laughs) Alright Gary.

Gary: See where I’m going?

I don’t know. Life. I don’t think you. I don’t I don’t think you should squander it. This is back to you know yourself, or do you aspire to be something you might actually not be.

This is the toughest question of it all my man. I mean if you want to be respected, and really known, so show the fuck up. Are you fucking kidding me with going a week without doing something?

I always say nobody you’ve ever met got there without the hard work. Nobody It’s just real. You know do you know insane DailyVee and the Snapchat stories has been to everybody? They didn’t realize how hard I was going at it. You know many fucking people used to say the word “luck”? Nobody has the audacity to say that to my face now. And I love it.

Document over create.

I mean there’s so much magic going on in New York City.

Do you know how many people are sitting in a place that’s not New York City? You got a billion stories out there. You don’t feel motivated to tell a story today? Go let somebody else do it. You have so much charisma. You could walk up on anybody in two seconds and get them to feel comfortable.

So you can’t create? Distribute. You can’t create today, facilitate.

There’s no excuse for not talking to the world. It just doesn’t have to be your thoughts and words every time.

Guest: What about building a team?

Gary: Don’t even think about that. You’re not even close to that right now.

Let me give you a real good answer, since I got a feel for you right now. You need to work on you before you worry about a team. You got to get your shit together. I can tell you you’ve got to have certain things that you need to do before you worry about a team. Get your thing in place.

Create. Distribute. Interview. There’s so much creative shit man. I’m way more creative then I realized because stuff comes so natural to me. Like, go take a picture on every odd Street in New York in Manhattan.

Like I don’t know, go start at 113, then 111, then 109. Like call it “Odd corner” and just literally do an interview every everyday on Instagram for a minute starting at 113th all the way down.

That’s the show. Every fucking Monday you go to fucking 113th the next week 111th and literally stand there until somebody walks by and you interview that person.

And that’s the fucking show. I think what I’m good at is building a pillar up top that creates content below. DailyVee, AskGaryVee show.

One thing people struggle with is they think it needs to come from them, and it instead it needs to come from the structure down. You know how hard it is to manifest that kind of original creative thing from the bottom? But think of yourself as like CNN or MSNBC.

Monday is Odd Corner. That’s it. If you’re white boarded now on mini shows that you could do — Monday’s Odd Corner. Tuesday’s Subway Shots. Wednesday’s Suburbs. You just literally going out and interviewing.

And Suburbs clicks and all of a sudden Toyota is hitting you up and say hey we’ll pay you you’ll drive a Toyota to New Jersey. See where I’m going? But you’ve got to put yourself in that position. You know why podcast have worked for a lot of people? Because they interview people.

So they don’t have to do the work. My version of that is answering people’s questions. It brings value to those individuals and to the entire community.
https://medium.com/media/d07393307d09c19496ad80d1ed81d222/href
This article was originally posted on GaryVaynerchuk.com.
