Participating in the hackathon Genbrainiacs-2025 held at PSNA College of Engineering and Technology on April 4th and 5th, 2025, was an incredibly joyful and fulfilling experience.

The winning moment

The most heartwarming moment was winning First Prize, along with a cash reward of ₹10,000! That victory meant more than just a prize it was a reward for the sleepless nights, the endless debugging, and the faith we had in our idea.

The project : EcobinX

Our project, EcoBinX, was designed with a simple yet powerful mission: to make waste segregation smart, efficient, and eco-friendly. Here’s a quick look at what EcoBinX does:

The Waste Management System aims to improve sanitation and effectively separate and dispose of waste. It uses:

• Inductive Proximity Sensor to detect and separate metallic wastes.
• Capacitive Proximity Sensor to identify plastic materials.
• Soil Moisture Sensor to differentiate between dry and wet waste.
• Load Cell to calculate the weight of plastic waste, helping in monitoring the volume and efficiency of waste processing.

These sensors are all connected to an Arduino, which uses smart coding logic to control a servo motor that directs the waste into the correct bin via rollers. This automation not only reduces human effort but also increases accuracy in segregation.

This project was a combined effort of passion, teamwork, and technical innovation. None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of my amazing team, who stood by me like a backbone throughout the entire journey. Their dedication, collaboration, and spirit made the experience truly special and the win even sweeter.

In today’s fast-paced world, efficient emergency healthcare is crucial. My project, a 5G-enabled real-time vitals transmission system, aims to bridge the gap between ambulances and hospitals by transmitting patient vitals such as ECG and SpO2 in real-time. Unlike conventional 5G ambulances, which mainly focus on telemedicine and video consultations, this system ensures that hospitals receive critical patient data before arrival, allowing for better preparedness and faster decision-making.

The opportunity to present this innovation at the 9th National Zonal Championship 2k25 at IIT Delhi was an experience of a lifetime. Competing against some of the brightest minds from across India, I had the chance to showcase my vision while learning from other groundbreaking ideas.

The Project: Real-Time Vitals Transmission for Ambulances

The Problem

Traditional ambulance systems only provide patient information to hospitals upon arrival, delaying critical care. 5G ambulances, while a step forward, focus primarily on video calls and telemedicine rather than real-time vitals transmission. Additionally, they are costly and inaccessible for most hospitals and ambulance providers.

The Solution

My solution is a plug-and-play vitals monitoring system that enables:

• Live transmission of patient vitals (ECG, SpO2, etc.) before the ambulance reaches the hospital.
• AI-powered emergency alerts to predict critical conditions.
• Seamless hospital integration through an intuitive app dashboard.
• Compatibility with both 4G and 5G networks, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity.
• Affordability and scalability, allowing any ambulance to adopt the system without requiring a costly upgrade.

Tech Stack: Building a Robust System

Developing this project required integrating hardware and software efficiently. Here’s a breakdown of the technology stack:

• Raspberry Pi 4 — Acts as the processing unit for collecting and transmitting patient vitals.
• SpO2 Sensor & ECG Module — Captures real-time vitals for transmission.
• 5G/4G Modem — Ensures seamless connectivity for data transfer to hospitals.

Software Components:

• Backend: Python (Fast API) — Manages data processing and API interactions.
• Frontend: Flutter — Provides a seamless mobile application for both hospital and ambulance personnel.
• Database: Google Firebase — Stores patient vitals and ensures secure, real-time access.
• Cloud Integration: AWS IoT Core — Facilitates real-time data streaming and AI-based analytics.

This combination ensures a secure, real-time, and scalable system for transmitting patient data from ambulances to hospitals.

Takeaway: Lessons from the Journey

While I did not win the competition, the experience itself was invaluable. Presenting my idea to a panel of industry experts and investors gave me deeper insights into the real-world feasibility and scalability of the project.

Some key lessons I took away from the competition:

1. Validation is Key — While the technology is strong, market validation and stakeholder feedback are crucial for scaling.

The energy and excitement at IIT Delhi were truly unmatched. Participants from all over India presented groundbreaking ideas in healthcare, AI, sustainability, and pharmacy.

Interacting with startup founders, investors, and tech enthusiasts helped me refine my pitch and understand the business aspect of innovation. The competition was accelerating, intellectually stimulating, and an incredible platform to push my idea forward.

Despite the competitive environment, there was a spirit of collaboration, with participants sharing knowledge and feedback. The event gave me a real taste of the entrepreneurial world, preparing me for future challenges in scaling my project.

In critical emergencies, every second counts. Unfortunately, hospitals currently receive patient information only after the ambulance arrives, leaving doctors unprepared for urgent cases. My solution is to bridge this gap with a real-time patient monitoring system that transmits vitals from ambulances to hospitals before the patient arrives.

By integrating hardware sensors, 5G connectivity, and a dedicated application, my project ensures that even the smallest ambulance in rural areas can deliver real-time patient data to hospitals, enabling quicker response times and better patient outcomes.

Technology Stack

To build this system, I’ve chosen the following technologies:

• Frontend: Flutter — Cross-platform mobile app development for both ambulance drivers and hospital dashboards.
• Backend: Python — Handling API requests and processing data.
• Database & Server: AWS (Amazon Web Services) — Secure cloud storage and real-time data handling.
• Hardware: Raspberry Pi, ECG machine, and SpO2 sensor — Collecting patient vitals and transmitting them to the cloud.
• Real-Time Communication: MQTT & WebSockets — Enabling instant data transfer between ambulance hardware and hospital systems.

Project Progress

So far, I have made significant strides in developing this system:

✅ Hardware and system design finalized — The Raspberry Pi is successfully connected to the ECG machine and SpO2 sensor.
✅ Basic app structure completed — The hospital dashboard and driver interface are in place.
✅ AWS integrated with the application — The database is set up, and the app communicates with it.
🔄 Final module in progress: We are now working on connecting real-time patient data from the Raspberry Pi to AWS and ensuring it displays seamlessly in the hospital dashboard.

This journey has been an exciting mix of challenges and learning experiences. Building a healthcare tech solution requires precision and reliability, and I’ve gained hands-on experience in:

FemmeCare was, thus, planned to fill this gap — a digital hub of all relevant resources women would need in one quiet place.

FemmeCare is an exhaustive digital platform that connects women’s health and wellness by integrating various aspects of well-being in a single-user-centric experience. FemmeCare evolved beyond the traditional health applications to deliver subjective insights, tracking mechanisms, and professional resources ensuring that every woman has everything in her access for a balanced, healthy life.

This period-tracking feature predicts menstrual cycles with a point accuracy of reminders and insights. It also monitors ovulation periods while offering extra care recommendations, such as hydration alerts, specific nutrition, and exercises similar to Kegel. The platform contains intercourse tracking to allow even better monitoring of periods.

Monitor My Fertility

FemmeCare gives body analysis tracks that keep track of ovulation windows, making reproduction even easier to follow. Be it fertility awareness or pregnancy planning, this feature will provide the basic data that makes it possible to make the right decision.

Plan My Diet

Recognising that dietary needs vary widely, FemmeCare provides personalised meal plans tailored to specific preferences, including vegan, lacto-vegetarian, fruitarian, pescatarian diets and many more. The platform ensures that users receive well-balanced nutrition guidance that aligns with their health goals, dietary choices, and lifestyle.

Track My Fitness

Fitness tracking from FemmeCare is intended for different training styles, be it in callisthenics, yoga, or strength conditioning. Each of the workout plans is structured on the realisation of how a woman’s body responds to different phases of the menstruation cycle and prepares to match exercises to energy levels and recovery requirements.

Learn and Glow

This skincare-focused dashboard offers personalised recommendations based on skin type, hormonal changes, and overall health. It provides expert-backed insights into skincare routines, helping users maintain healthy and glowing skin while addressing concerns influenced by menstrual and hormonal cycles.

Connect with Community

FemmeCare creates a comfortable platform for women to have discussions, share experiences, and seek guidance on health, fitness, and wellness issues. The community feature will allow users to find like-minded people and create an avenue for conversations and support. This platform will ensure the anonymity of the users considering the safety and privacy.

Chat with Femme AI

Now, to maintain the relentless support and 24/7 availability, FemmeCare has put an AI chatbot on board that immediately assists with health-related questions. For example, ask the chatbot for assistance with nutrition, spotting issues related to menstrual health, fitness, or mental well-being. The chatbot has credible information to offer in terms of advice and also sets reminders regarding hydration, workouts, and medication.

Final Thoughts

It was an eye-opening experience to go through this Women’s Hackathon. It transformed ideas into some real-world applications and showcased how technology has potential in dealing with some serious issues. When it comes to solving real-life problems with technology, one has to begin; it may be women’s health or education or sustainability, but each idea holds the potential to create a difference.

In the heart of India’s forests, where ancient giants roam, a silent crisis unfolds. Elephants, the gentle guardians of our ecosystem, are losing their lives to speeding trains, shrinking habitats, and increasing human-wildlife conflicts. This is not just a problem — it is a call to action. We did not embark on this journey for a hackathon. We did it to spark a revolution in wildlife conservation.

🔥 A Lesson in Failure: From PyExpo to Real-World Impact

My journey began with PyExpo, where I first showcased my idea to protect elephants using technology. But it didn’t succeed. I failed. And that failure became my biggest lesson. It showed me that true innovation doesn’t come from just having an idea — it comes from persistence, real-world experience, and the courage to push forward. That failure fueled my passion to make this idea a reality.

Instead of giving up, I immersed myself in research, not by reading reports, but by stepping into the field. I traveled across multiple forest regions to understand the crisis firsthand. My journey took me to:

• Anamalai — Walking through elephant corridors and observing their movement.
• Boluvampatti & Pooluvapatti — Meeting villagers and understanding how they deal with elephant encounters.

🌙 A Night with the Elephants

One quiet night in Anamalai, I watched a family of elephants arrive at a waterhole. The mother led the way, her calf staying close, playfully splashing the water. Under the moonlight, they drank in silence, their eyes calm and wise.

I realized then — elephants aren’t just animals; they are families, just like us. They care, they feel, they protect one another. That night, I knew my project wasn’t just about technology. It was about saving lives.

Failure at PyExpo wasn’t the end — it was the beginning of something bigger.

Now, my persistence has led me to an incredible opportunity — the forest department has asked me to develop and test this solution in an elephant camp. What once started as just an idea is now turning into a real-world conservation effort. And in recognition of our deep research and immersive fieldwork, we won the National Level Human-Animal Conflict Hackathon conducted by the Forest Department. 🏆

This journey wouldn’t have been possible without my incredible teammates: Migavel D,Deivapandeeswaran B,Hariprasad BU, who contributed their expertise, dedication, and passion to making this project a success. Each of us played a crucial role, from research and fieldwork to technology development and presentation.

The Idea: How Technology Can Help Save Elephants

After my field research, I designed a system that could track elephants and prevent accidents. The idea was simple but powerful:

1. LoRa-Based Low Power Tags — Elephants wear small, lightweight, long-range communication (LoRa) tags that transmit their location.
2. AI-Based Tracking — A central system analyzes their movement patterns to detect risk areas.
3. Real-Time Alerts — If elephants approach railway tracks or human settlements, instant alerts are sent to train operators, forest rangers, and nearby villagers.

With this system, trains can slow down or stop, and people can take precautions, preventing conflicts and saving elephant lives.

🌿 Walking with the Giants: The Key to Winning

The true key to success in the hackathon was not just having a great idea — it was research, fieldwork, and understanding the real problem.

✅ We didn’t rely on online reports — we stepped into the forests to see the problem firsthand.

✅ We listened to those affected — villagers, forest rangers, and conservationists who deal with this crisis every day.

✅ We challenged assumptions — by studying existing solutions and identifying their flaws through real-world experience.

Research is not just about data. Real research means feeling the problem, seeing it unfold, and connecting with those who live it every day. A report can give numbers, but it won’t tell you the heartbreak of a ranger finding an elephant killed by a train. Emails won’t show you the fear in a villager’s eyes when an elephant strays too close to their home at night. Fieldwork is the difference between assumption and truth.

🌍 Real Solutions Come from Real Experience

A hackathon should never be just about building a prototype; it should be about creating a real-time solution that drives change. Many approach hackathons by brainstorming ideas, reading online reports, and listing technical specifications. But true impact comes from understanding the problem through the eyes of those affected. That’s why my project is not just a submission — it is becoming a movement.

This is bigger than winning or losing. This is about redefining how we coexist with nature. My work doesn’t end with a demo or a pitch — it begins with field tests, partnerships with government bodies, and real-world impact. This journey has turned me from an innovator into a conservationist, an activist, and a changemaker.
