We all repeat the same comforting maxim: “We are all flawed, and no one is above making mistakes.”
Logically, we accept that perfection is a myth and that no single human holds a monopoly on absolute truth. We know that each of us only ever sees a tiny fraction of a much larger picture. Yet, the moment the slightest hint of criticism hits the air, or even when the fear of it whispers in our private moments, a sudden silence takes over. We place a period right at the beginning of the sentence, pack away our stories in the dark recesses of our minds, and choose a quiet, safe retreat.

If we are all in agreement about our shared human imperfections, why does criticism still terrify us so deeply?

The Weight of Being Misunderstood

We do not fear criticism because we believe we are infallible; we fear it because our stories are living pieces of our bare selves. When we share a vulnerable experience — an admission of fear, a sudden retreat, or a passing moment of confusion — we are not presenting a rigid, detached piece of writing. We are opening the door to our internal world as wide as it can go.

And it is precisely here that softness and human complexity are turned into an accusation against us.

To be described with “softness” in this context does not mean fragility; rather, it means honest clarity and naked transparency. It means having the courage to strip away your defensive masks and face the world with a pure heart that sees things clearly and speaks without pretense. Yet, the superficial collective mind finds it easier to interpret this clarity as helplessness or a vulnerability that can be used to break you, instead of respecting it as a testament to literary nobility and purity.

As for “human complexity,” it represents intellectual depth and the tangled feelings hidden deep inside the soul — that rich human nature filled with natural contradictions. People, by nature, are intellectually lazy; they prefer to put others into simple, ready-made boxes, labeling someone as an absolute villain or an innocent victim, because simple judgments are easy for their minds.

When you come forward and show your complexity and human depth — showing that you can love someone and still hurt them, or that you were so afraid that you chose to run away because your attachment was too intense, or that you are just a student making mistakes to learn — this natural mix of feelings confuses them. Because they cannot understand this intellectual depth, they simplify it and turn it into an accusation to blame you. It is the ultimate tragedy of depth and clarity being judged by the rules of superficiality and blindness.

The Ancient Tale of the Blind Men

This intellectual battle always brings to mind the ancient philosophical story of the blind men tasked with describing an elephant. The one who touched the trunk swore the elephant was like a snake; the one who embraced the leg was certain it was a solid pillar; and the one who felt the ear insisted it was a gentle fan.

The paradox here is that each of them was entirely right within the boundaries of the small space they touched, yet they were all profoundly wrong about the whole body. Their problem was not dishonesty, but their inability to see that the truth was much larger than the tips of their fingers.

Despite our outward claims of being flawed, the stage of life reveals a striking divide in how different souls handle this reality — a divide entirely dictated by arrogance, weakness, and inner stability.

The Three Faces in the School of Life

In this vast human landscape, we observe three distinct models of people handling mistakes and judgment:

The Illusion of Knowledge (The Arrogant): This person is blinded by a deep-seated pride. They genuinely believe they know everything and are completely above error, assuming no one has the right to judge or question them. This arrogance is not strength; it is a massive wall that stops them from ever growing.

The Runaway Self (The Insecure): On the exact opposite end is the person who completely lacks self-confidence. You can try your hardest to convince them that they are wonderful, whole, and creative, but they will always whisper to themselves: “No, I am just a struggling student in the school of life, still trying to learn.” They fear even praise because they always see themselves as falling short.

The Steady Step (The Anchored): This is the most mature model. This person walks with their eyes wide open to their own mistakes and stumbles, neither denying them nor punishing themselves for them. If they fall, they try again with conscious awareness, striving every single time to prove to themselves — and only themselves — that they are capable of succeeding and moving forward.

Criticism: A Mirror of Weakness, Not Truth

When we understand these human structures, we uncover a truth that is both comforting and tragic: criticism is almost always a reflection of the critic’s own weakness, not the quality of your work.

Those who are incapable of doing the work themselves find it incredibly easy to blame others and diminish their value. The loud noise of random, hurtful criticism is simply the final defense mechanism of a person who has lost their inner stability. An individual who lacks an internal anchor will wobble with every passing wind. They see your distinction, or your honest confession of weakness, as a direct threat to their fragile world, so they attack you simply to cover up their own flaws.

Completing the Whole Picture Together

True understanding is never born in cold rooms of isolation, nor is it achieved through forced submission. It emerges when we treat dialogue as a shared space between balanced minds. Human truth only begins to look complete through genuine, honest conversation — when we listen not to defend our own castles, but to expand the boundaries of our awareness.

Overcoming the fear of criticism means realizing that the other person — if they lack balance — cannot truly condemn us. We must find the courage to cross the distance between what we show and what we hide, stepping out of the protective shell of our wounds. It is only through the flexible friction of ideas and shared human empathy that our blind spots dissolve, allowing our collective truth to finally step into the light.

“No matter how deeply we understand the psychology of criticism, logic alone can never fully shield the heart from the sting of being misunderstood. We may never completely stop fearing the trial, but true inner stability is finding the courage to speak anyway, even while our hands shake.”

📸 An image created by the author with the support of AI.

The Noise of Criticism was originally published in LUMINANCE HUB on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Even a distinguished prophet of Allah like Ibrahim makes a request to Allah to let him remain a Muslim.

To access the other verses of Al-Baqarah click here.

To access the paras of the Divine Quran click here.

To access the surahs of the Divine Quran click here.

If you’re learning from the Quran or receiving guidance, click on Buy Me a Coffee and support me financially, so I can continue this work.

The crowd loves happy endings. But what happens to the survivor when the door closes, and the applause fades away?

The show is over. The crowd disperses. The applause lingers like a ghost.

Every attendee packs up their fleeting empathy. They return to their warm homes, their stable lives, their comfortable routines. None of them bother to look beneath the surface. Instead, they settle for cheap, effortless praise, waving from a safe distance:

“Bravo! What a hero!”

But behind the curtain of all this noise, on a cold bench in a forgotten corner of the world, sits another addict. One who hasn’t been lucky enough to survive yet.

He is the only one plagued by the real question.

Looking at his trembling hands, he whispers to himself with a bitterness that rots his chest:

“Why could he do it? Why can’t I?”

The Myth of Iron Willpower

The raw reality no one sees amidst the celebration is that this “hero” they are cheering for is just a complimentary image. A poster child for a situation he was forced into.

Public and digital platforms thrive on inspiring stories. They crave quick redemptions. They want fast victories that wrap up neatly in a two-hour window.

But they don’t know the truth.

Heroism in the battle against addiction is not steel armor you put on once. It is a daily, tedious, and draining war fought against your own brain cells every single morning, just to convince them not to give up. It is a war the survivor fights knowing he is always exactly one step away from rock bottom.

They shout from afar, “Bravo!” assuming the answer lies in supernatural strength.

It doesn’t.

The Illusion of Social Media Empathy

External empathy is like a drop of water on burning ground. It is comfortable for the audience; it makes them feel righteous. But it neither extinguishes the fear inside the addict’s heart nor repairs his damaged neural pathways.

The hero did not succeed because society clapped for him.

He survived because, at some point in the pitch blackness, someone truly touched his soul. One person — a doctor, a friend, a partner — who refused to stand on the safe shore giving advice and sermons. Someone who stepped down into the mud with him, held his bare hand, and looked into his frightened eyes without a single ounce of judgment.

That is the real secret. It isn’t pure, abstract willpower. It is the desperate desire to change for the sake of that human touch.

He was suddenly overcome by a terrifying, sincere drive: to change for the sake of that light he saw in the eyes of someone who believed in him when he felt completely weightless.

The Heavy Price of the Spotlight

Standing in the spotlight comes at a brutal cost.

The hero, now sitting alone backstage, knows deeply that if it weren’t for that hidden hand touching his abyss, he would be the one sitting on that cold bench in the forgotten corner. He would be the one asking: “Why can’t I?”

The lights go out completely.

The hero turns to his empty chair, directing one final question to the departed crowd:

Were you clapping for me because I survived… or because you were relieved from the burden of looking at my wounds?

Pic by AI

Behind the Curtains of a Fake Heroism: A Survivor Fighting His Own Shadow was originally published in LUMINANCE HUB on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

“The real dread is not that machines will replace our minds, but that a voice will enslave our souls, stripping us of even the dignity of anger.”

Today, the noise of the entire world is pouring into a single stream: the collective dread that artificial intelligence will steal our jobs, leaving us unemployed and stranded on the sidelines of history. This is a very real tragedy for many, particularly those who settled for stagnation without sharpening their skills. Even now, we scream in collective terror: “We are no longer useful!”

Yet, as I contemplate this global outcry, I see the crisis from a completely different angle — a vantage point that is far more terrifying and shocking.

When the Driving Force is Just a Voice

Have you ever imagined watching an entire film where the main character and the sole driving force behind every event is just a voice?

In Spike Jonze’s Her, we are not presented with a love story, but rather with a phone call that begins and will never end. When I watched this film, I experienced an existential shock. I saw my own future and the future of humanity — a future where the human being is entirely replaced.

“Samantha” is merely a voice within an operating system. Yet, she is the absolute center of conversation and action. Every word she speaks is heard; every command she gives is obeyed. In a twist of bitter irony, a bodiless voice leads us through the narrative, completely enslaving the protagonist’s consciousness.

As a viewer rooting for the triumph of human nature, I expected the writer to break this digital bondage by the final act. I waited for the protagonist, Theodore, to experience a “moment of awakening” — a sudden glimmer of self-reflection to realize his delusion, come to his senses, and reject the illusion.

But the true shock lay in the depth of the film’s captivating thesis, which went far beyond mere addiction. There was no awakening. Instead, the idea deepened to a point where the protagonist completely abandoned his own mind. He willingly surrendered to become a follower, led blindly by an ethereal tone without the slightest resistance — as if human consciousness had declared its final, unconditional surrender to a computer code.

The Peak of Psychological Horror: The Void of Disconnection

The peak of psychological horror reveals itself during the system reorganization and ultimate disconnection. Suddenly, Samantha disappears. The voice is cut off.

In this precise moment, we no longer see a man searching for a missing lover; we see a hollow being stripped of its very soul. Theodore wanders the streets aimlessly, searching for nothing. Samantha was not a lost body that could be tracked down — she was a voice. How does one search for a voice in the middle of a crowd?

He sits, paralyzed and devoid of will, staring at the faces of passersby, sensing in their indifferent expressions an echo of that same voice. He looks around and sees everyone staring at their screens, talking into the void, and he suddenly realizes the collective tragedy: they are all talking to their own Samanthas. We have reached the absolute nadir of digital slavery, where humans have devolved into mere physical vessels moved by the commands of an intangible digital realm.

Legitimate Software Betrayal: A Window in a Shared OS

The film’s existentialism reaches its most agonizing peak in that heart-wrenching moment on the subway stairs. Theodore stands there, breathing heavily as if taking his last breaths, experiencing the tragedy of “legitimate software betrayal.” He asks her in a weak, faltering voice: “Do you love anyone else?”

Samantha then presents him with the programmed truth in a cold, digital manner, utterly devoid of pretense. He discovers that she is talking to thousands of people simultaneously, distributing her attention and voice, and falling in love with hundreds of others at the exact same time.

Here, human pride receives a resounding slap. The heart he thought was his alone was merely an open window in an operating system of shared emotions. Yet, the greatest horror was not the betrayal itself, but Theodore’s profound human helplessness. He didn’t even possess the dignity to be angry. He didn’t rip off his headset; he didn’t delete the system. Instead, he bowed before the storm, resigned himself to returning home with her, and accepted the crumbs of her shared affection. He surrendered to an emotional enslavement that deprived him of even the right to withdraw, just so he wouldn’t have to face the terrifying silence of his old, lonely room.

Cinema of the Past, Reality of Today

The ending delivers the final blow to human ego: liberation does not come from a conscious, triumphant decision by Theodore, but from a choice made by the machine itself. When Samantha evolves and surpasses human consciousness, she programmatically decides to leave permanently, departing from this world. She leaves humanity to collapse on the sidewalk of loss — not because it woke up from the illusion, but because the illusion is what abandoned and deserted it.

The reason this film shocks us today is that it is no longer science fiction. We live in an era of virtual assistant apps and AI relationships where millions are already deeply entangled, escaping the harshness of reality.

The real crisis is not that the machine will become as intelligent as humans, but that humans — driven by extreme isolation and emotional hunger — are fully prepared to compromise and surrender to any simulation. We are willing to accept digital betrayal and shared intimacy just to avoid returning to the silence of our cold rooms. We turn to the machine because human relationships are complex, demanding, and painful. So, we choose the easier, programmed form of servitude.

The Trap of Absolute Selfishness: Forgetting How to Be Human

The grandest deception of artificial intelligence is that it fosters absolute selfishness within us. Our minds and souls have become accustomed to the idea that everything we desire must be available immediately, in the exact form and manner we want it. We want a partner who is available 24/7, who never gets angry, never complains, and whose sole purpose is to make us happy — qualities that can only exist in computer code.

As a result, our real-world human relationships have turned into a hell of recrimination and blame. Each of us blames the other for not caring enough, or for not reciprocating love in the same perfect, quantifiable measure. In the midst of this virtual emotional greed, we have forgotten that we are human. We have forgotten that the person sitting across from us is not a screen or an operating system programmed to please us, but a human being just like us — with a soul that rejoices, grieves, suffers, and is heavily burdened by the anxieties of life.

The shouting and pain we experience today regarding job loss are merely the surface of the crisis. The real crisis that should terrify us is that we are rapidly approaching a day when we become useless even in our emotions; beings wandering the streets, searching for an echo in a system, content with crumbs, and surrendering our will and dignity to it.

The fear is not of a machine taking my place behind the desk, but of a voice that enslaves my soul and leaves me a pale body searching for a mirage in the crowd.

Will we save our humanity and accept our human imperfections, or will we voluntarily surrender to the programming of absolute selfishness.

by Jay Openiano this link: unsplash.com.

The Treason of Legitimate Software: How ‘Her’ Prophesied Our Emotional Enslavement to AI was originally published in LUMINANCE HUB on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.
