Kindness is a gift. Somewhere along the way, they started calling it rent.

AI Generated Image

I used to be the lighthouse.

Every ship that lost its way found me burning. Every storm, every midnight, every crisis, there I was, lit up and waiting.

I thought that made me beautiful.

It only made me predictable.

The Night the Light Flickered

One evening I was sick and tired and empty, and I let the phone ring.

The message that came afterward didn’t ask if I was okay.

“Why didn’t you answer? You never do this.”

Never. As if my exhaustion were a glitch. As if I were a machine that had malfunctioned, not a person who had run out.

That’s when I understood.

Somewhere along the way, my kindness stopped being a gift and became a schedule.

How It Happens

It never starts with a demand. It starts with a thank you.

You help once, and they’re grateful.
You help twice, and they’re pleased.
You help ten times, and they’re comfortable.
You help a hundred times, and they’re entitled.

No one announces the shift. There is no meeting and no contract. Your generosity just slides, quietly, from “how kind” to “where were you?”

People don’t thank the sun for rising. They complain when it’s cloudy.

You can be the sun if you want, but don’t be surprised when no one notices the warmth and everyone notices the one day you didn’t show.

The Truth That Stings

Let me be blunt, because softness got me nowhere.

If you are always available, you are not valued. You are used.

The person who is rare is treasured. The person who is endless is taken for granted. That’s not cruelty, it’s just human nature. We cherish what costs something and ignore what comes free.

And you made yourself free.

Not because you were weak, but because you were kind, and kindness without limits looks exactly like weakness to people who benefit from it.

The Day I Said No

My first “no” was small and shaking.

Three words. No excuse, no apology, no essay.

The silence afterward was loud.

Some people grew cold. Some got angry. Some called me selfish, which is the word people use when the supply stops.

Here is what I learned from the wreckage:

They didn’t miss me. They missed the service.

It hurt like hell, and it was the best information I ever received.

The Ones Who Stayed

A few people didn’t leave.

They sat in the discomfort. They adjusted. They looked at me, maybe for the first time, and saw a person with a limit instead of a utility with a switch.

They said thank you again. They asked how I was. They gave something back.

That’s how you tell them apart:

When you set a boundary, those who love you ask, “Are you okay?”
Those who use you ask, “Why have you changed?”

Don’t Mistake This for Bitterness

I haven’t stopped caring. I won’t.

The world is cold enough, and I’d rather be warm than safe.

But now I give on purpose.

I give because I choose to, not because I’m afraid of what happens if I don’t. I give to people who see it, not people who bill it. I give with open hands, not empty ones.

Because a gift only means something when the giver is free to refuse.

Remember This

Be the fire, but don’t be the fuel.

Be generous, but never be obligatory.

Love people, but don’t let them price you at zero.

The ones who value you will honor your “no.”
The ones who don’t will show you exactly where you stood.

Either way, you win.

You get your peace back, and you get the truth.

Have you ever been someone’s free safety net? Tell me in the comments. I read every comment.

We are finally on social media.. College had shifted online, and I was preparing for the exam I had always dreamed of clearing. I had cleared many exams after school, but in this one, I missed by just four marks.

For a teenager, that is not a small thing. Your hopes, your hard work, and your entire future feel tied to that one result. But for me, what made it even heavier was the environment I had to go through it in.

At that time, I was living in a house with a cousin brother, who had somehow become my flatmate. We had a routine — cleaning the house was my responsibility, and the kitchen was his. He was a night owl, while I would wake up early, make my breakfast, and do my own things. I was an active teenager, and maybe that itself bothered him.

He would keep staring at me without any reason. I always felt uncomfortable around him. He would make strange faces, as if he was treating me like a little kid. Sometimes it felt like he was deliberately trying to trouble me.

The house itself was in a terrible condition. The room, the mess, and that constant tense atmosphere — it all put so much pressure on my mind that I would trip and fall while simply walking around the house. My mind was never at peace; I was always anxious and distracted.

But the most painful part was his double behaviour.

When we were alone, he would stare at me, act strange, and make me uncomfortable. But the moment any guest or family member came home, his entire personality would change. He would suddenly become innocent, sweet, and perfect. The same person would stand in the kitchen, lovingly making tea for everyone and acting like the most caring person in the world.

From the outside, everyone saw him as a kind, harmless person. Nobody knew how he behaved once the doors were closed.

I endured those 8 months in silence. I could not tell anyone, because I was scared they would not believe me. Everyone would say, “But he is such a nice person; he even makes tea for everyone.” I was afraid people would think I was saying all this just to gain sympathy, or that I was using my exam failure as an excuse.

But the truth is, those 8 months felt like torture for me. There were no loud fights or dramatic scenes — just an environment where my mind and heart both felt suffocated.

Even today, I want to say one thing: if someone’s presence makes you uncomfortable, trust your intuition. Not everyone sees what you go through every day. People only see what is shown to them, but the real truth is known only by the person who lived it.

Maybe missing that exam by four marks was not just my failure. Maybe it was God’s way of testing me, or maybe it was something I still don’t fully understand. But one thing I know for sure — please do not judge anyone if you do not know their full story.

We are finally on social media.. Do we stop living because of it? No.

In the same way, when we walk on the path of success, we also know that difficulties will come; so why do we give up?

We must move forward.

Hope is a powerful feeling that helps us move forward, even when life becomes difficult. It gives us the strength to face our problems and the courage to try again.

Sometimes, we may feel tired, lost, or afraid of the future. But hope reminds us that better days can come.

Imagine a student who fails an important exam. He may feel disappointed and think he is not good enough.

I think everyone, at some point, goes through that one moment where they think "My God, I can't do this". But you know what? You can.

No matter how close you are to the edge, no matter how badly you feel like giving up, or think it's best to do so rather than have to put up with the pain - Don't. Don't lose hope that things will get better.

Don’t give up, because there is someone out there who will make you smile in a way no one else ever could. Keep that glimmer of hope alive in your heart, because someone is out there searching for your smile.

So wipe your tears and keep your head held high.

We are finally on social media.. She stops on the floor where one door is shut, her younger daughter sleeping, while the other stands open.

The only difference is that the bed is made. The room is spick and span. There is no music blaring from the Bluetooth speaker, no books scattered across the floor, no clothes carelessly tossed over a chair, no voice yelling,

“Why did you wear my top?”

She sits down with a heavy heart.

Her firstborn is married.

Just days ago, this house was bursting with people, music, and laughter. There was hardly any space to move. Wherever you turned, you bumped into a suitcase, a fruit basket, or boxes of sweets.

Those days, she longed for a little peace and quiet, never anticipating the quiet that would follow.

She smiles through her tears, remembering one particular evening.

Just before a family dinner, the sisters had a fight over a top.

“Why did you wear my top?”

“It was in my cupboard!”

“It was not!”

Neither was willing to back down.

At the dinner, they sat at opposite ends of the table, speaking to everyone except each other. Their parents exchanged amused glances, knowing this was just another chapter in a story that had repeated itself for years.

Now, sitting outside the silent room, Meera would give anything to witness that silly fight again.

Then her thoughts drift to the night before the wedding.

The four of them sat together long after everyone else had gone to bed, each holding a mug of coffee.

They reminisced about family holidays, birthday disasters, school projects completed at the last minute, and inside jokes that somehow never grew old.

They laughed.

They cried.

They laughed again.

Between stories, there were moments of silence as the reality of the next day settled over them.

Then her elder daughter got up and walked to her cupboard.

She opened the door and stood looking at everything inside. The dresses she had collected over the years, the books she loved, the little treasures and keepsakes only she understood.

Turning to her sister, she smiled.

“Take whatever you want.”

Her sister frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“Everything,” she said softly. “It’s all for you.”

For a moment, no one spoke.

Her younger daughter blinked back tears while pretending not to be affected.

Meera remembered standing there, watching the two girls. The same girls who had spent years fighting over clothes, borrowing things without asking, slamming doors, and making up before the day ended.

And now, one was leaving, while leaving everything behind.

The house is quieter now.

The wedding guests are gone. The music has stopped. The fairy lights will soon come down.

But what Meera misses is not the celebration.

She misses the life that filled this room.

The borrowed tops.

The scattered books.

The slammed doors.

The endless music.

The late-night coffee conversations.

The laughter that echoed through the house.

And yes, even the fights.

Because she finally understands that what sounded like noise was actually the sound of home.

Thankyou for reading this story , this story was inspired by this prompt

🪔 𝓑𝓮𝔂𝓸𝓷𝓭 𝓣𝓱𝓮 𝓒𝓮𝓵𝓮𝓫𝓻𝓪𝓽𝓲𝓸𝓷 🪔at Pen With Paper

🌸Preeti Pathak🌸 , Sriram Yaladandi, Rishita Sharma💗

This story is part of Beyond the Celebration — A Writing Challenge by Pen With Paper.

HOBBIES AND ATTRACTION

From Most to Least

Photo by ArtHouse Studio from Pexels

What’s your hobby?

Going to the gym, watching football, playing video games, and drinking a few beers on a Friday are some of the most common male hobbies. So I’m guessing it’s one of these.

Regardless, do you think Colombian women will find it attractive? You’re about to find out.

Here are six male hobbies ranked by attractiveness, and why.

Top 3 Most Attractive Male Hobbies

If you have one weekend in Colombia to make an impression, spend it on these three hobbies women find attractive.

Dancing

Colombians are known for dancing. I’d say it’s an essential part of everyday life and occasions, like family gatherings, birthdays, and weddings.

What makes this one of the hobbies women find attractive, despite being common, is the connection it creates.

Julián Guerrero, Vice President of Tourism at ProColombia, says music allows you to “connect your physical journey with your intellectual, emotional, and spiritual journey so you can have unique, memorable, and transformative experiences.”

Dancing helps in that immersion. It’s how you take part in the culture, the community. It’s how women can get to know you without a long conversation.

Do you make her feel comfortable? Respected? Do you have chemistry? What are your intentions? One dance answers these questions.

Exercising

Going to the gym is one of the most attractive male hobbies because Colombian women are big fitness enthusiasts themselves.

They run, take long walks, hike, and lift at the gym. Plenty also swim or play volleyball. And they’re looking for a partner who can keep up with their lifestyle.

Latin America has generally long treated physical activity as central to daily life. Across metro areas, 61% of fitness consumers exercise multiple times a week, and 78% do so at least a few times each month.

Liz Clark, CEO of the Health & Fitness Association, says people now recognize that it improves physical health, mental well-being, and overall quality of life.

A man who exercises keeps his head steady and his life in order. He looks after himself. And that’s a man a woman can count on when she needs someone to care for her.

Cooking

Cooking is becoming one of the most common male hobbies.

Kevin Curry, founder of Fit Men Cook, says men are realizing that it’s “masculine” to hunt and provide for themselves and others.

That mindset is attractive anywhere, but more so in Colombia. According to the Regional Studies Association, food is one of the few things that engages all our senses at once and relates to our experience, our memories, the person who prepared it, and the people we’re sharing it with.

Any man can take a woman out to a nice restaurant. But a man who cooks for her makes a better partner, as she can taste his effort.

Photo by Kampus Production from Pexels

Top 3 Least Attractive Male Hobbies

Now here’s the other half of the list: three male hobbies that will tank your chances of attracting women.

Drinking

In Colombia, drinking is rarely done alone. It’s a part of almost every social occasion, big or small.

Friends and families pool money for a case of alcohol or a round instead of buying individual bottles. Then we sip slowly while we talk or dance.

But that doesn’t make it harmless. Nearly all Colombians, 98%, say alcohol is a problem in the country, causing violence, traffic accidents, and long-term illness.

Drinking is one of the least attractive male hobbies if not done in moderation.

Moderation means having a couple of beers, with food and conversation in between, and knowing when to stop.

If you’re often drunk, you lack awareness and reasoning. You make mistakes and spend the following days apologizing.

Sports Betting

Colombians love football. Sports researchers even call it a patriotic symbol, “an obsession that unifies the population.”

And because we love this sport so much, betting on our favorite teams is common. I won’t lie; it gives a man something: community and money if he wins.

But sports betting is a selfish hobby, no matter how you frame it.

Win or lose, you raise the stakes for the next match. You either want to double your winnings or recover your losses. Then again. And again.

Your money could’ve served you and your loved ones better, like clearing a debt, paying for a date, or booking a vacation in the country.

Doomscrolling

Colombians value quality time.

Every Sunday, families and friends go to parks to bike, skate, walk their dog, or do any mundane activity together.

Doomscrolling blocks you from doing that. You’re physically present, but you’re occupied with something else.

Anyone can see that you’re not interested in a conversation. Why chase after someone who doesn’t want to be there in the moment? Nobody wants to compete with a screen for attention.

These male hobbies that Colombian women consider most to least attractive have something in common.

Dancing, exercising, and cooking are creative, physically active, and intellectually stimulating. More importantly, you can do them with other people.

Meanwhile, drinking, sports betting, and doomscrolling isolate you and risk your health and finances.

So, pick a hobby that encourages you to show up.

References

ProColombia. 2024. “Colombia: culture and diversity that makes the world dance.” ProColombia. https://colombia.travel/en/blog/colombia-culture-and-diversity-that-makes-the-world-dance.

Health & Fitness Association. 2024. “Latin Americans Embrace Fitness Facilities as Key to an Active Lifestyle.” Health & Fitness Association. https://www.healthandfitness.org/latin-americans-embrace-fitness-facilities-as-key-to-an-active-lifestyle/.

Premack, Rachel. 2016. “Why so many men are cooking.” The Washington Post. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/07/19/why-so-many-millennial-men-are-cooking/.

Blanco-Murcia, Laura, Isabella G. de la Vega, Jesús Perdomo-Ortíz, and Juan P.

Discover the must-have dresses, rich seasonal colors, and effortless trends defining Fall 2026 fashion, with beautiful styles for every occasion and personal aesthetic

AI Generated Image

Autumn is arguably the most romantic season in fashion. As temperatures shift and natural light takes on that golden, amber quality that transforms everything it touches, our wardrobes respond — gravitating toward richer fabrics, deeper colors, and silhouettes with more structure and weight. Fall 2026 is an especially exciting season for dress styling, with a rich mix of nostalgic influences, contemporary minimalism, and bold experimental choices converging into one of the most varied and interesting fashion landscapes in recent memory.

The Dominant Color Palette for Fall 2026

Color is always the first announcement of a new season in fashion, and fall 2026 brings a compelling palette.

Deep burgundy and wine: Rich, romantic, and universally flattering, these shades dominate across silhouettes and fabrications. They work equally beautifully in velvet, satin, and structured crepe.

Caramel and warm cognac: Earthy and sophisticated, these warm neutrals reflect the season’s light in a way that photographs beautifully both outdoors and in warmly lit interior settings.

Forest green: Deep, lush, and evocative. One of the standout shades for formal fall dresses 2026, working particularly well in midi and floor-length styles.

Chocolate brown: A deep neutral that works as both a background and a statement. Pairs beautifully with cream, rust, and gold accessories.

Midnight blue and charcoal: The season’s cooler anchors. Elegant, versatile, and timelessly stylish.

Key Silhouettes of the Season

The trending dresses for fall 2026 draw from several silhouette directions simultaneously.

Structured midi: The midi length continues its dominance, this season rendered in more structured, formal fabrics — wool blends, jacquard, and structured chiffon. The result is more polished and intentional than the relaxed midi styles of previous seasons.

Long-sleeve sophistication: Sleeves return as a key design feature, from dramatic statement sleeves to refined three-quarter and bishop styles. These add warmth, modesty, and a distinctly autumnal sensibility.

Wrap dresses in elevated fabrics: The wrap silhouette gets an autumn upgrade through the use of rich, textured fabrics — charmeuse, silk velvet, and printed satin.

Evening gowns fall 2026: For formal occasions, the season’s gowns favor column and A-line silhouettes in heavy, luxurious materials — velvet, beaded crepe, and structured silk being the most prominent.

Fabric Trends for the Season

The fabrics most aligned with dresses for fall 2026 are those that reflect the season’s desire for both warmth and refinement.

Velvet: The most autumnal of all fabrics — rich, lustrous, and deeply tactile. Particularly strong this season in midi dress formats and structured gowns.

Brocade and jacquard: Pattern-woven fabrics with built-in texture and visual complexity. A sophisticated choice that reduces the need for heavy accessorizing.

Duchess satin: Weightier than charmeuse satin, this fabric holds structure while maintaining a luminous surface. Ideal for formal autumn events.

Wool crepe and ponte: For day-to-evening transitions, these structured knit fabrics offer comfort, warmth, and an impeccably polished appearance.

New Fall Dresses 2026: What’s Fresh This Season

Beyond the dominant trends, a few notable new developments define the freshest directions for fall 2026:

Asymmetric hemlines and necklines: Geometric, architectural, and distinctly modern. These create visual interest without the need for embellishment.

Tonal dressing: Dressing in variations of a single color family creates a powerful, intentional effect. Deep burgundy dress with cognac accessories, or chocolate brown with rust — these combinations feel both studied and effortless.

Detachable elements: Removable sleeves, skirts that transition from midi to maxi, detachable trains — versatility is increasingly valued in formal dressing, allowing a single dress to transition between multiple events.

Styling Fall Dresses for Different Occasions

Work events: Structured midi dresses in wool crepe or jacquard with low heels and minimal jewelry. Keep the silhouette clean and the palette sophisticated.

Evening occasions: Velvet or beaded gowns in deep jewel tones, paired with metallic accessories and elegant heels.

Weddings and formal events: A-line or column gowns in rich fall colors — forest green, burgundy, midnight blue — with a classic heel and understated jewelry.

Conclusion

Fall 2026 offers a richly satisfying wardrobe season for those who love dressing with intention. The colors are deep and beautiful, the fabrics are luxurious, and the silhouettes are elegantly varied.

On the quiet expectations we never admit to, and what it means to make peace with what we can’t control.

Photo by Annie Spratt on Unsplash

Have you said yes to something without second-guessing?

Someone needs a helping hand, then suddenly you’re already helping them finish something. Not even thinking about the question of “what will I get from this?” Or at least that’s how it felt while you were doing it.

Most of us have experienced this at some point in our lives. You do a task properly, sometimes more than what it asked for. Then you hand it over and wait. Not for a celebration or anything. Just a sense that you were helpful, or a word that would make you feel like you really did something small.

Suddenly, there’s a list of what’s missing.

Why did that hit so hard?

We say we weren’t doing it for credit. Okay. But if that were really true, would we just shrug it off and continue doing the things we usually do? It doesn’t work that way. It always manages to keep replaying in the back of our minds. At some point, it makes me wonder if some part of us was already counting before telling the rest of us.

There’s this other odd thing. People look for what’s not there instead of what already is. You can put all your time into something, and the one thing it lacks becomes the whole conversation. Is that carelessness? Or is it just a common thing, always scanning for the gap? To be honest, I don’t know. I only notice the repetition.

Maybe we should turn the question around. Something like, “Do we do it too?”

Think about how we see our own kindness. We remember the favors, the times we stayed patient when we didn’t have to. It turns into proof of being human.

So when someone is also kind to us, they go in that same box. They’re like me. They’re one of the kind people. Then something happens, a cold reply, an unfair word, and the box doesn’t fit anymore. Why does the hurt have so much more impact than the thing that really caused it? Was the feeling really bigger than the reason? The reason we never really asked about?

What if the thing that bothers us most about someone is just something we don’t try to see in ourselves?

Have we helped and expected something back? Have we looked at someone’s effort and gone straight to what seems wrong in it? It’s easier to be hurt by a trait when it’s landing on someone else.

Were there even signs? Were they there since day one? The distance, the hard-to-see good things? Did we notice, still help, and hope this time would end differently? If so, who are we actually upset with? The person who broke a promise, or the person who never made one?

I’m not asking to blame anybody. Being treated unfairly is real. It doesn’t turn into a fair thing just because we figured something out about ourselves in it. But once we’ve looked at the resentment in an unbiased way and turned it over a bit, what do we do with it?

Can we change how someone sees our work? Doubtful. Can we help them notice what they never did? Doubtful too. So what’s left in us? The work itself, the reason we did it, and whether we want to keep carrying the thought around.

Is letting go of what’s not in our control just giving up? At some point, it would seem that way. Other days it would feel like a mature thing to do, for them and for us too.

Next time you catch yourself agreeing to something right away, try asking this to yourself. If nothing comes back, will I still be happy doing it? If the answer is “no,” what am I really giving?

Until the next reflection,
.aletheia

Read more at dotaletheia.com

We are finally on social media..
