Democrats won because voters rejected Republican corruption and billionaire power. They want the economic fairness of the New Deal, not another ideological crusade.

America Voted Against Trump, Not for Socialism. (image generated for the author)

The voters have delivered a political correction of historic proportions. The Democrats would be wise to study what they were given before deciding what to do with it.

This was a vote against Donald Trump and the Republicans who enabled him. It was not a vote to move America to the far left.

A rejection is not an endorsement

On November 3, Americans gave Donald Trump and his Republican Party a resounding answer. Democrats took control of both houses of Congress, won Senate races in states that had seemed securely Republican, and captured House districts Trump carried comfortably only two years ago.

It was a remarkable election. But its meaning is not especially mysterious.

Voters were angry about the cost of living, the war with Iran, corruption, and a president who treated the Constitution as an inconvenience. They were angry with the Republican members of Congress who had surrendered their responsibility to check him. And they were tired of watching people close to power prosper while ordinary families struggled.

The early exit polling makes one fact unmistakable: opposition to Trump motivated much of the Democratic vote. One in five people who voted for a Democratic House candidate actually viewed the Democratic Party unfavorably.

Think about that. Some of the people who delivered this extraordinary victory did so despite their reservations about the party they voted for.

Democrats should be grateful for their votes. They should not mistake them for ideological converts.

The center is not a compromise with authoritarianism

I was born in 1946, at the beginning of the most remarkable period of broadly shared economic growth in modern American history. I grew up in a country where a worker’s wages could support a family, homeownership was a reasonable ambition, and each generation expected to do a little better than the last.

Not everyone shared equally in that prosperity. Racial and gender discrimination excluded millions from opportunities others took for granted. But the economic bargain itself was real: working people could reasonably expect to participate in the wealth they helped create.

I was also a fourth-generation Republican. I voted for Ronald Reagan twice. I didn’t leave the party because I suddenly became a socialist. I left because the party increasingly abandoned principles I had once believed it stood for, and eventually surrendered itself to a man I have never voted for.

There are millions of Americans whose political histories are different from mine but whose conclusions are similar.

They are not asking to replace right-wing ideological rule with left-wing ideological rule. They are asking for government that respects the law, does its job competently, and answers to the people who elect it.

That is not an extreme position. It is the basis of constitutional government.

The New Deal was not socialism

We have allowed the language of American economic policy to become absurd.

Suggest that corporations should pay reasonable taxes, that financial markets should be regulated, or that workers should have meaningful bargaining power, and somebody will announce that socialism is at the door.

Franklin Roosevelt did not abolish capitalism. The New Deal helped preserve it by establishing rules under which its benefits could be shared more widely and its periodic disasters made less destructive.

The resulting economic order kept private enterprise at its center. It also recognized that markets require rules, that monopoly power can be destructive, and that political democracy becomes fragile when economic power is concentrated in too few hands.

Social Security, labor protections, financial regulation, progressive taxation, and public investment were not an attempt to eliminate American enterprise. They were part of an effort to make it work for Americans.

For decades, Republicans as well as Democrats largely accepted that settlement. Eisenhower expanded Social Security. Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency and signed the legislation establishing OSHA.

These were not socialist presidents. They understood something their political descendants seem to have forgotten: effective government and successful private enterprise are not natural enemies.

When I speak of returning to the center, this is the center I mean. Not the arithmetic midpoint between two sets of slogans, but a practical American tradition of regulated capitalism and constitutional restraint.

How we let the billionaires take the wheel

I came home from the Army in the summer of 1971. That August, a Richmond attorney named Lewis Powell wrote a memorandum for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce urging American business to organize for a sustained political and intellectual campaign.

It was one important blueprint for a much longer campaign to enlarge corporate influence over public policy.

Over the decades that followed, organized labor weakened, financial regulation was dismantled, taxation became less progressive, and corporate money gained increasing leverage over American politics. The Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision accelerated that last trend dramatically.

The consequences were not merely economic. They altered the relationship between the people and their government.

When immense fortunes can finance candidates, political organizations, lobbying campaigns, and information networks, those fortunes acquire influence that ordinary voters cannot match. The formal right to cast one ballot remains intact, but the ability to shape the choices presented to voters becomes profoundly unequal.

This is the problem I mean when I speak of the billionaire class. I have no objection to people becoming wealthy through productive enterprise. I spent a career building businesses and software systems. I know the difference between creating value and extracting it.

My objection begins when private wealth becomes a means of purchasing public authority.

Nor is this exclusively a Republican problem. Wealthy Democratic donors have influence, too. A party that claims to oppose oligarchy while remaining dependent on the same machinery of political finance has some explaining to do.

The public is already well ahead of the politicians. A 2026 survey found that 80 percent of Americans believed the rich had too much political power, including majorities of Republicans and independents. Another found overwhelming support for disclosing political money and restoring limits on election spending.

That is not a socialist manifesto. It is a demand that democracy mean something.

What the Democrats have actually been given

The new congressional majority has real work to do.

It must restore Congress as a coequal branch of government, use its oversight powers to investigate misconduct, and reestablish the principle that public office is a public trust. It must confront the cost of housing, healthcare, food, and energy. It must look seriously at competition, labor’s bargaining position, the tax system, and the growing power of concentrated capital.

None of that requires an ideological crusade. It requires legislation grounded in evidence, debate, and a willingness to build coalitions beyond the party faithful.

The first obligation is to make constitutional government function again. The second is to demonstrate that it can improve the lives of the people it serves.

And Democrats should remember who gave them this opportunity: not just progressives, but independents, disaffected Republicans, moderates, and people who have simply had enough of being governed for somebody else’s benefit.

The most disastrous mistake would be to treat those voters as if they had signed on to a party platform they may never have read and would not necessarily support.

Read the ballots, not your wish list

The Republican Party’s surrender to Donald Trump was not inevitable. It was a succession of choices, made by people who valued power, position, and money more than their constitutional obligations. Some benefited directly. Others looked away. Together they allowed one man’s appetites to become the operating principles of a major political party.

Last night, the voters imposed a correction that those politicians were unwilling to make themselves.

Democrats now have a rare chance to rebuild public confidence in representative government. They can begin by proving that elections are not simply an opportunity for the winning faction to impose its preferences, but a responsibility to govern on behalf of the whole country.

Americans did not vote to abolish capitalism. They did not vote for socialism. They voted against a government that too often seemed to serve the wealthy, the connected, and the president himself.

They want the ordinary expectation of a decent American life restored: honest government, economic opportunity, fair rules, and a future their children can reasonably believe will be better than their own.

The Democrats won. Now comes the harder part.

They have to understand why.

Further reading: The America We Built, and the America They Dismantled

America Voted Against Trump, Not for Socialism was originally published in The Polis on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.
