How Sync Works in Fog of World
Fog of World’s database is offline, which means all of your data are saved directly on your device, and we don’t have any server to keep your data. Therefore, it’s important to sync your data to any cloud storage when you record new meaningful tracks.
The Basic
Every time you sync in Fog of World. Both of your data on the device and cloud storage will be merged. In the end, both will have the same MERGED data once sync complete. If you want to transfer your data to another device, simply sync with any cloud storage first on your old device. Once done, sync with the same cloud storage again on your new device.
Fog of World is smart enough to sync only modified files. The first sync may take a very long time if you did record a lot of tracks, but the required time would be much shorter afterward. Besides, you can stop and re-start syncing at any time. The sync process won’t start over every time you sync.
Be aware that if you want Fog of World to be able to sync while in the background. You must turn on the record mode, or it’s likely the system will freeze or kill the app as soon as it enters background.
Supported Cloud Storages
Currently, Fog of World supports Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, and Nutstore. iCloud Drive only works on iOS. However, the design of iCloud Drive is very different compared to the others, which makes it super slow and unreliable. We highly recommend you to use any cloud storage except iCloud Drive as your primary backup method.

Every cloud storage is independent. You can sync with only one cloud storage or multiple ones for insurance. However, if you are in China. Only Nutstore works out-of-box. All others require VPN to work. In addition, you may need to change DNS to Google’s 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 manually for OneDrive.
Auto Sync
It’s possible for Fog of World to sync with the assigned cloud storages automatically when meeting all of the following conditions. Basically it’s designed to activate when you are sleeping, and the record mode will be paused while auto sync is working as well.
- Fog of World stays in the background.
- The record mode is ON.
- The device is charging and the battery life is full.
- The device is connected to WiFi.
- Fog of World enters background at least half an hour.
- (In Android) The device is considered idle by the system.
The auto sync process will be interrupted when any of the following conditions are met.
- Fog of World enters the foreground.
- The device stops charging.
- WiFi is disconnected.
- The device is moving.
Sync between Multiple Devices
If you have multiple devices and want to see the same recorded tracks on all of your devices. Here’s what you need to do if you have two devices A and B.
- Choose a cloud storage. (ex. Dropbox). Both A and B should connect to the same Dropbox account.
- Sync with Dropbox on A. (Dropbox will have A’s data when complete)
- Sync with Dropbox on B. (Dropbox will have both A and B’s merged data when complete)
- Sync with Dropbox again on A (A will also have both A and B’s merged data when complete)
It’s a bit annoying to do it manually, I know. So if you are not in a hurry, the easiest way is to turn on Auto Sync on both devices. That way, you should see the same merged data when you get up in the morning.
