Your Staff Are Building Their Own Apps With AI. Banning It Won’t Work.
Gartner expects three in four employees to create or change technology outside IT’s view by 2027. Cloudflare has just open-sourced a platform to give that work a governed home.
Microsoft surveyed 31,000 office workers in 2024 and found that 78% of those using AI at work brought their own tools (Microsoft Work Trend Index). At small and mid-sized companies the figure was 80%. Gartner predicts that by 2027, 75% of employees will acquire, modify or create technology outside IT’s visibility, up from 41% in 2022 (Gartner).
The word that matters in that prediction is “create”. Ten years ago, shadow IT meant a manager paying for a file-sharing app with a company card. Today a sales executive can describe an app to an AI tool and have it running by lunch, connected to the customer list. An agent can be given a login and left to send emails, update records and move money. When an app or agent like that breaks, the problem no longer stays inside a third-party app. It becomes a leak from your own systems, and under Malaysia’s amended data protection law you now have 72 hours to report it (OneAsia).
