Leftovers of a Life
Poem
The faded, worn,
threadbare bathrobe
now more grey than blue,
reminds me of you.
It still hangs on a hook,
no longer used.
Years ago
I washed away
all possible DNA
or scent of you.
Yet even so
I cannot bring myself
to transform
this final reminder
into rags.
Preparing for a trip
I find your old pillbox
with its inbuilt blade
to slice your pain pills
for the mysterious pangs
in your jaw.
A slight, white powder
remains.
I rinse out
what you may have touched
some time ago, five years?
For seconds,
my eyes brim with tears.
