Knitting a Sweater For Yourself May Just Be the Most Radical Form of Self-care

A very serious essay about knitting for those who don’t want to do it

My friends have started inspecting my clothes. Not in a particularly judgmental way. More like detectives.

“Did you make that?”

They ask this every time we meet. And, increasingly, the answer is yes. So naturally, I have decided that everybody should learn to knit.

But so far, all I’m hearing are objections.

Which, I suppose, is fair. Knitting a sweater is an objectively absurd recommendation to my overworked friends.

If your immediate response is “I’m too busy for that,” I get it. In fact, I think you said that to me while we were having breakfast last weekend, and I just shrugged you off.

I didn’t mean to be rude, and neither did you.

I get it. You’re a busy bee; you have a full calendar, you go rock climbing three times a week, then there are office days, plus a boyfriend at the weekend. You work a day job and do online shopping because it’s convenient.

You hate it, but what can you do? You need to wear something to the office. Preferably something in your color season, obviously. And since we’re on the subject, could I make you a sweater?
