Plateau Buster: Why Experiments Beat Chasing the Perfect French Method
How to design simple language learning experiments that turn plateaus into progress
When Learning About Learning Becomes the Problem
Sometimes I feel like I have two main hobbies. The first is learning French. The second is learning about learning French.
If you’ve ever spent more time in a day reading Reddit threads about “the best app for French” than actually using French, you know exactly what I’m talking about. The YouTube videos promising “fluency in 3 months.” The app reviews. The blog posts comparing different methods. The podcast episodes about the perfect study system. And if you’re like me, deep dives into linguistics topics are better than ice cream.
It’s a special kind of productive procrastination. You’re not watching Netflix. You’re not scrolling social media. You’re doing research. You’re being strategic.
Except — and here’s the uncomfortable truth — when you spend more time learning about how to learn than actually using your target language, that’s a sign you have a problem.
Not a motivation problem. A methodology problem.
