Competing priorities are the name of the game for leadership positions, especially mid-level management. One minute you are putting out a ground-level “fire” and the next you are tasked with a deliverable with a tight deadline.

Sound familiar?

It is easy to get off task and lose sight of or even understand your goals when they all seem to be competing for your attention. Rest assured there are many ways to combat this and it starts with leveraging tools straight from project managers’ playbooks.

Project management was foreign to me until I became involved in a few major initiatives in my past two organizations. Initially, I watched from a distance, taking my cues from them on the next steps. When I transitioned to a start-up, I began to work even more closely with project managers and noticed how they are masters at keeping up with multiple, even competing projects.

I was in awe. The flawless nature with which they navigated every aspect of highly complex projects. They knew what step we were at and who owned which portion of the project. It was an OCD’s dream.
