Shirdi: A Soulful Traveller’s Guide to Sai Baba’s Sacred Town Near Nashik
One of the most pious Sai Baba temples, which attracts many devotees from all over the world.
Nestled in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar (Ahilyanagar) district, roughly 90 km from Nashik, Shirdi is one of India’s most visited pilgrimage towns — and a surprisingly rewarding short break for any traveller. Millions come each year not only for the darshan of Sai Baba but also for the quiet power of a place built on the simple idea that “Sabka Malik Ek” (there is one God for all). Even if you’re not a devotee, the atmosphere, the orderly temple complex, and the easy combination with Nashik’s temples and vineyards make it an excellent base for a 1–2 day trip.
Who Was Sai Baba?
Sai Baba of Shirdi lived in the village until his Mahasamadhi in 1918. A saint who transcended religious boundaries, he lived in a mosque (Dwarkamai), kept a sacred fire (dhuni), and taught faith, patience, and compassion. His white marble idol and samadhi remain the emotional centre of the town.
