By Noon, The Jasmine
The Revolution of Unlearning Possession
Our signatures were still smiling
in a register at Bandra Family Court,
when her father hugged us both
and later whispered to me,
something she overheard,
“Revolution business ends here.
Family time begins.”
I laughed at his dreams,
“Love is a revolution, Sir.”
She didn’t laugh,
“Revolution is life, Papa.”
Her father sighed
and bid us farewell.
On our way home,
at the traffic signal,
I bought a garland
of jasmine flowers
I was tying the garland on her wrist,
when her phone screen glowed.
It was a message from Madhav,
“Congratulations Urvi!”
She quickly locked the screen,
and pressed her palm
against the car window,
as though the glass were in pain.
I caught her looking at a poster,
‘MARCH TO SAVE THE FOREST.’
