Haiku Poetry
Speculative Haiku
Horror, Sci-Fi, Dystopian, Disquieting/Angry, etc.
Do you like horror, fantasy, science fiction and/or dystopian books and movies? Did you know there is a haiku sub-genre called Speculative Haiku that covers these themes?
I recently read, Purging the Monsters, a chapbook full of speculative haiku by Julie Bloss Kelsey. It reminded me that, although I’ve written a few speculative haiku, I’ve never tried to have it published unless I was responding to a submission call for that sub-genre. I do love horror, science fiction and dystopian themed books. I have no idea why I never focused on writing haiku in this sub-genre. One thing is true: It can be fun!
[A short listing of publications that are interested in this sub-genre of Haiku appear after this story.]
Below is my favorite haiku by Julie Bloss Kelsey from her chapbook:
in the space
between wakefulness and sleep
tentacles
Below are a few haiku I’ve written that loosely fit into these non-traditional categories for haiku. There are two sections, Horror/Sci-Fi Haiku and the last section is Dystopian and Disquieting/Angry Haiku.
