Democratize Access to Artificial Intelligence and Empower More People to Build Intelligent Systems for Themselves

12 min readSep 17, 2023

Editor’s Note

Throughout history, the ability to read and write was once reserved for a privileged few. Knowledge was concentrated in the hands of those who had access to education, institutions, and resources. Technology gradually broke down those barriers, transforming literacy from a privilege into an essential part of modern life.

Today, we face a similar transformation with artificial intelligence.

Much of the knowledge, infrastructure, and expertise needed to understand and build advanced AI systems remains concentrated within large technology companies and a relatively small community of specialists. The widening gap between those who can harness AI and those who cannot risks creating new social and economic divides.

At AI Advances, our mission is to educate, empower, and democratize access to artificial intelligence.

We believe AI should not remain exclusively in the hands of elites. Its true potential can only be realized when people from different educational, professional, and socioeconomic backgrounds can understand it, question it, build with it, and use it to solve problems that matter to them.

Our goal is to equip readers with the knowledge and ideas needed to understand AI, build their own systems, evaluate emerging technologies critically, and apply AI to real-world challenges.

We invite researchers, engineers, students, practitioners, entrepreneurs, educators, and thoughtful observers of technology to contribute to this mission.

Together, we can help make AI knowledge as accessible — and eventually as fundamental — as reading and writing themselves.

One Community, Two Publications

As the AI Advances community has grown, so has the range of excellent work submitted to us.

To give writers more ways to publish with our editorial community, we now operate two sister publications:

AI Advances

Our flagship publication is designed primarily for substantive, in-depth articles that develop an idea through significant analysis, technical explanation, evidence, experience, or argument.

We especially welcome long-form work with a reading time of approximately 10 minutes or more.

AI Advances Briefs

AI Advances Briefs is our sister publication for concise, focused, high-quality writing.

Briefs is ideal for articles that make a strong argument, explain an important development, present an interesting technical idea, or offer an original perspective without requiring long-form treatment. Articles will generally fall in the 4–10 minute reading range.

The distinction is format — not quality.

AI Advances Briefs is managed by the same editorial team, follows the same editorial philosophy and standards, and draws from the same community of writers as AI Advances.

Our editors may recommend one publication over the other when we believe a submission is better suited to that format.

Scope

Topics covered by AI Advances and AI Advances Briefs may include, but are not limited to:

  • Machine learning and data mining
  • Deep learning and representation learning
  • Graph theory and graph mining
  • Agent-based and multi-agent systems
  • Natural language processing
  • Image processing and analysis
  • Brain-based learning
  • Big data analytics
  • Robotics
  • AI-based software
  • Your experiences in the real-world applications of the above techniques in the following areas:
    — Finance
    — Healthcare
    — Marketing
    — Gaming
    — Agriculture
    — Transportation
    — Energy
    — Environmental Science
    — Manufacturing
    — Law and Legal Services
    — Education

    — Space Exploration
    — Entertainment
    — Social Sciences
    — Supply Chain Management
    — Retail
    — Sports
    — Ethics
  • And new areas as AI keeps evolving

We welcome both technical and nontechnical perspectives, provided that the article contributes meaningfully to understanding artificial intelligence or its impact.

Our Editorial Philosophy

We encourage “Your Story Your Way” and do not like to put restrictions that may limit your imagination and creativity. There are just four basic notes that you need to be aware of:

  1. Your story does not violate Medium Rules.
  2. Your story contributes to our mission of democratizing access to AI in some aspect and is well written.
  3. Your story is not written to hype up a product or company.
  4. Your story has a read estimate of at least 4 minutes and contains a featured image to attract and excite readers. Consider using Unsplash where most of the images are fine to use without asking for permission.

We value originality, insight, personality, and craftsmanship.

A useful question to ask before submitting is:

Could a generic AI system generate essentially the same article?

If the answer is yes, the article is unlikely to be accepted.

The Editor-in-Chief gave a talk at Medium’s first-ever Publishers Hour — Pub Crawl — on March 19, 2024. If reaching a larger audience is your goal as a writer, please watch this video to understand our editorial needs.

From Boost Nominations to a New Era of Medium Publications

AI Advances is proud of its history as being among the first 70+ publications selected by Medium to participate in the Boost Nomination Pilot program in January 2024. Being invited into that program gave our editors the opportunity to identify exceptional work for consideration by Medium’s curation team. During that period, we developed one of the strongest editorial track records in our community, reaching a record-high 43% Boost rate in April 2025. In December 2024, Medium included AI Advances among its list of “20 Great Publications for Academic Writers,” where we proudly rank №3. That history remains important to us because it reflects something larger than a metric: our commitment to finding and publishing work that deserves a wider audience.

Medium retired the publication-editor nomination portion of the Boost program in June 2026 as it introduced the Editor Partner Program and redesigned the relationship between writers, editors, publications, and Medium’s curation system.

The nomination program have ended, but Boost has not. Medium’s human curation team continues to identify exceptional stories for broader distribution across Medium.

Our editorial philosophy therefore remains the same: we select stories that we believe are capable of standing out well beyond the publication itself.

Acceptance into AI Advances or AI Advances Briefs is an editorial endorsement. It means our editors believe your work brings meaningful value to readers.

There is no need to wait for us to add you as a writer before your first submission.

Medium currently limits guest writers in an Open-to-all publication to three active submissions at a time. Established writers whom the publication has added as approved writers are not subject to that submission-queue limit. If you would like us to add you as an approved writer, please fill out this form.

Which Publication Should I Choose?

Choose AI Advances if:

Your article develops an idea in substantial depth and is generally a 10+ minute read. Examples include:

  • Detailed technical tutorials
  • Deep analyses of AI systems or research
  • Extensive industry or policy analysis
  • Research-driven essays
  • Long-form arguments or perspectives
  • Detailed case studies
  • Comprehensive examinations of emerging technologies

Choose AI Advances Briefs if:

Your article is more concise — generally a 4–10 minute read — but still contains a compelling idea, insight, argument, explanation, or analysis. Examples include:

  • Focused technical explanations
  • Commentary on important AI developments
  • Short analytical essays
  • Original perspectives
  • Practical AI insights
  • Research observations
  • Focused case studies

Please do not artificially lengthen an article simply to submit it to AI Advances. Good writing should be as long as the idea requires and no longer. If we believe a strong submission is better suited to our sister publication, we may invite you to submit it there instead.

What We Look For

We receive more qualified submissions than we can publish. Publication is therefore selective. Strong submissions usually demonstrate several of the following:

  • Originality — the article says something that has not already been said a thousand times.
  • Insight — readers come away understanding something differently.
  • Expertise or experience — the author brings knowledge, research, experimentation, professional experience, or thoughtful observation.
  • Evidence — factual claims are supported appropriately.
  • Clarity — complex ideas are communicated effectively.
  • Personality — the writing sounds like a person with a point of view, not a brochure or generic summary.
  • Craftsmanship — the author has clearly taken time to structure, edit, and polish the piece.
  • Reader value — there is a reason someone should spend several minutes of their life reading it.

We prioritize substance over hype.

An article that merely summarizes the latest AI announcement is unlikely to stand out. Tell us why it matters, what others are missing, what you learned, what you disagree with, or what your experience reveals.

Author FAQs

Q1. How to submit my story to AI Advances?
A1. Follow either AI Advances or AI Advances Briefs on Medium. Then open your story in Edit mode, click the three-dot menu, select Submit to publication, choose the publication from the Following tab, and click Send for review. You do not need to complete a writer application first. If you would like us to add you as an approved writer so that you can have three active submissions at a time, please fill out this form.

Q2. Should I submit to AI Advances or AI Advances Briefs?
A2. Choose based primarily on the natural scope of your article. AI Advances generally focuses on longer, in-depth work, especially articles with a reading time of approximately 10 minutes or more. AI Advances Briefs focuses on shorter, concentrated pieces, generally in the 4–10 minute range. Both publications are managed by the same editorial team and maintain the same commitment to quality. If your article is strong but we believe it fits the other publication better, we may invite you to resubmit it there.

Q3. When will I receive a decision?
A3. Our editors review submissions as quickly as possible, and we aim to make most decisions within approximately 24 hours. Because our editorial team reviews a large number of submissions, we generally cannot provide individualized explanations for declined stories. A declined submission should not discourage you from submitting stronger work in the future.

Q4. Will an editor proofread my story?
A4. Our editors may correct basic spelling, grammar, formatting, headlines, subtitles, or image attribution when necessary. However, your submission should already be ready for publication when you send it to us. Editors are not responsible for rewriting unfinished drafts. A story requiring substantial proofreading or restructuring may be declined or returned for revision.

Q5. Are promotional calls to action allowed?
A5. According to Medium’s guidelines, you are welcome to include the following in your stories: (1) A short bio (~2–3 lines); (2) Links to your other Medium stories; (3) Link to other social media profiles; and (4) Link to your website, book or other project. Please do not ask for claps or include other calls to action, including gifs of clapping, requests for donations, or other links or embeds for the purpose of capturing user information or soliciting money. This ensures the highest quality reading experience for our readers.

Q6. Are AI-generated articles accepted?
A6. Our readers like to read stories written by human authors. So, we don’t welcome any texts created by Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT. If your story discusses LLMs and you wish to include examples of the texts you generated, please keep them to a minimum. Make sure you specify the prompt you used and mark where the AI-generated texts start and end. Also, note that according to Medium’s policies about AI-written content, stories containing suspicious AI-generated texts will not receive a Boost.

Q7. Are published content accepted by AI Advances?
A7. While we love original content that our readers haven’t seen before, you may submit stories from your personal blog or website to AI Advances. Note that any time you rely on someone else’s words, you must cite or quote them properly to avoid plagiarism.

Q8. Are very long stories or very short stories welcome by AI Advances?
A8. Yes — with the appropriate publication. For AI Advances, we particularly encourage substantive long-form writing and generally prefer articles around 10 minutes or longer. For AI Advances Briefs, we welcome tighter pieces generally ranging from approximately 4 to 10 minutes. There is no reason to inflate an article merely to increase its reading time. The best length is the length required to communicate the idea well.

Q9. How selective are AI Advances and AI Advances Briefs?
A9. We are selective because our goal is not to publish as much content as possible. Our goal is to publish work worth reading. Historically, AI Advances has accepted only a fraction of the stories submitted to us, reaching an acceptance rate of approximately 12% in August 2025. As our community grows, we continue to receive more strong submissions than we can accommodate. The addition of AI Advances Briefs gives us another home for excellent work whose scope is better suited to a concise format, but it does not lower our editorial standards.

Q10. What happens after my story is published?
A10. Publication gives your story access to the audience and editorial ecosystem surrounding AI Advances. Depending on the story, it may receive additional visibility through:

  • The publication homepage
  • Medium recommendations and reader feeds
  • Editors’ Picks
  • Medium’s human curation and potential Boost
  • Our LinkedIn network
  • X (Twitter)
  • Publication newsletters
  • Other editorial promotions

To help our authors reach a broader audience, we promote published articles through our LinkedIn network and X (Twitter) social media channels.

After your article has been accepted for publication, you are welcome to submit a third-person draft of a LinkedIn post introducing and promoting your article, along with a Twitter/X draft of no more than 140 characters, using this link.

Our editorial team may revise the submitted text as needed for clarity, style, and social media presentation before posting.

If your story is behind Medium’s paywall, your participation in Medium’s Partner Program and earnings remain governed by Medium’s current Partner Program rules.

You remain the author and owner of your work and may remove your story from the publication in accordance with Medium’s tools and policies.

Q11. How do I know whether the editorial team truly supports my work now that editors no longer nominate stories for Boost?
A11. Acceptance itself is our endorsement. During the Boost Nomination era, an editor nomination provided an additional visible signal that we believed a story was exceptional. That nomination mechanism no longer exists. Today, our support may instead appear through an Editors’ Pick, homepage placement, social-media promotion, newsletter inclusion, or other editorial attention. Medium’s own curation team independently determines which stories receive a Boost. Our job is to find excellent work, help present it well, and put it in front of readers who will value it.

Q12. Why might I be invited to move my submission to AI Advances Briefs?
A12. Medium’s evolving publication system places practical limits on how many stories publications can publish, while the number of qualified submissions to AI Advances continues to grow. Rather than simply turning away strong work, we created AI Advances Briefs as a distinct sister publication for concise, high-quality pieces. It is not a rejection outlet. It is managed by the same editorial team, follows the same standards, and serves the same broader AI Advances mission. If we invite you to submit there, it means we believe your work is worthy of publication but better suited to the format or publishing schedule of AI Advances Briefs.

Q13. How can I become part of the AI Advances community?
A13. Start by following AI Advances and AI Advances Briefs on Medium. Connect with us through:

Read our recent work, engage thoughtfully with our writers, and — most importantly — send us something worth reading. Let’s shape the future of AI together.
