What Do I Mean by “My Mind”?
An ordinary question that became harder to answer the longer I stayed with it
I started thinking about the mind because of how quickly it moves.
A conversation ends, and it carries on inside me. I replay what I said, imagine what the other person meant, come up with a better reply. Then something else catches my attention, and off the mind goes again.
I usually call all of that “my mind,” as if I know what I mean.
But when I try to look more closely, the phrase gets less clear. Is my mind the thought I’m having, or the part that notices the thought?
Is it the worry, or the awareness that I’m worrying?
And if I can notice a feeling changing, does that mean there is something in me that isn’t changing or have I just created another idea about myself?
I can see the appeal of imagining a quiet observer behind the noise. It suggests there is somewhere steady to stand. But I’m not sure that the image is the same as the experience. Sometimes I notice a thought only after I’ve been carried away by it. Sometimes noticing it doesn’t make it disappear. It just means I’m thinking about it in a slightly different way.
