The Yankees will host a Sprint to Spring 5K on February 14
Six days before their first spring training game and seven days before the first home game (February 21 against the Tigers), the Yankees will host their Sprint to Spring 5k and Fun Run on February 14 at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, which is where their spring training complex is and their Single-A team also plays at the complex.
It will be a one-of-a-kind morning as participants will have a unique opportunity to gather together to celebrate the start of another baseball season while getting a rare chance to run onto the field from the players’ perspective. The first 250 runners who finish the 5k will receive a unique commemorative Andy Pettitte bobblehead.
Pettitte played 15 out of his 18 MLB seasons with the Yankees and finished third in Rookie of the Year voting in 1995 with the Yankees, he was the ALCS MVP in 2001 and he was a two-time All-Star and four-time top six Cy Young finisher with the Yankees. Pettitte’s 219 wins are third most in franchise history, his pitching WAR of 51.3 is also third best in franchise history, his 2020 strikeouts are the most in franchise history and his 438 games started are tied for the most in franchise history.
He always seemed to pitch well after a loss and in an important game in the playoffs. He had a 3.81 ERA in 44 starts in the playoffs and a 3.56 ERA in 13 starts in the ALCS. He was even better in the playoffs than in the regular season since in his 531 games (521 starts) across 18 seasons, he had a 3.85 ERA…
