8 Best Open-Source Coding LLMs in 2026 — And What You Can Actually Run
Kimi K3, DeepSeek V4, Qwen3-Coder, GLM-5.2, gpt-oss and more — ranked by the hardware and coding workflow they actually make sense for.
The best open-source coding LLM in 2026 is probably not the model you should download.
That sounds strange, but look at where open models are now.
We have trillion-parameter models that can work across huge repositories, use tools, debug code and operate inside coding agents.
And then we have models small enough to run locally on a developer workstation.
Both groups are called “open models.”
They are not remotely the same experience.
So instead of another benchmark leaderboard, I think there is a more useful question:
Which coding LLM makes sense for the hardware and work you actually have?
That is how I would choose today.
One small terminology note: I use “open-source coding LLMs” here because that is how developers usually search for them, but technically some models are open-weight models with their own licenses, rather than OSI-style open-source software.
