Pandas vs Polars vs DuckDB: Which Tool Should Handle Your Data in 2026?
All three shipped big releases this month. The benchmark wars say pick one. The release notes say something else.
“Pandas is dead” is the wrong headline
Every few months a benchmark goes viral. Polars finishes a groupby in a sliver of the time. DuckDB eats a 50 GB Parquet folder on a laptop.
Someone puts “Pandas is dead” in the title, and the replies fill up with people rewriting notebooks that worked fine yesterday.
Those posts leave out one detail. Pandas shipped 3.0 in January, its biggest release in years, and it fixed the two complaints people repeat most: slow strings and that baffling copy warning.
And while everyone was arguing about who wins, Polars and DuckDB quietly started acting as plumbing for each other.
So the 2026 question isn’t which library wins. It’s which one belongs at which step of your pipeline.
Duller than a benchmark chart, sure. It’s also the answer that saves you a rewrite.
