Jeff Bezos: AI Deserves Water Before Humans Do
His comments reignited the AI water debate. Here’s what the actual science on desalination and the 2030 crisis says he’s missing.
On desalination, atmospheric water harvesting, the UN’s 40% supply gap warning, and a genuinely uncomfortable comment from Jeff Bezos about whose water needs should come first.
Here is a sentence that sounds like it should solve everything: humans can now manufacture freshwater out of seawater, and even out of thin air.

And here is the sentence that should worry you anyway: the United Nations still projects that global freshwater demand will outstrip supply by 40% by 2030, a gap serious enough that researchers have started using the term “Day Zero Drought” for the point when demand permanently exceeds what a region can supply, with hotspots already identified across the Mediterranean, southern Africa, and parts of North America.
Both of those things are true at the same time. This piece is about why.
