Today I'm going to discuss an issue that is outside my usual area of focus. My work generally centers on AI strategy, governance, and the evolving relationship between human and artificial intelligence. But given the impact AI is having on people's careers and livelihoods, I feel compelled to offer some practical advice that I believe can make a real difference.

I hear from job seekers almost every day, particularly those at the entry and mid career levels. Many have submitted hundreds of applications and received little or no response. Most suspect they are being screened out by AI before a human being ever sees their resume.

They've followed the conventional advice. They've added keywords. They've mirrored the language in the job description. They've highlighted skills and certifications.

For many, it still isn't working.

The reason is simple. AI based screening has evolved. Better systems are no longer just matching keywords. They are looking for evidence, consistency, and relevance. They are asking whether your experience supports the role you're applying for and whether your career story makes sense.

Here are a few practical suggestions that can improve your odds.

1. Stop maintaining one resume. Create a master resume instead.

Keep a comprehensive resume with everything you've accomplished. Then use AI to create a version tailored to each position. A generic resume is rarely the best answer to a specific opportunity.

2. Ask AI to critique your resume instead of rewriting it.

Upload your resume and the job description and ask:

"If you were the hiring manager, what would make you hesitate to interview me based only on this resume?"

That question often produces more useful feedback than asking AI to "improve" your resume.

3. Identify what the employer is really hiring for.

Every job description contains a long list of requirements, but only a handful usually drive the hiring decision.

Ask AI:

"What are the five capabilities this employer is really looking for? Rank them in order of importance."

Now reorganize your resume so those capabilities become immediately obvious.

4. Replace responsibilities with evidence.

Don't tell employers what your job was.

Show them what you accomplished.

"Managed customer accounts" is a responsibility.

"Managed a portfolio of 80 enterprise clients with a 95 percent renewal rate" is evidence.

Evidence is far more persuasive to both AI and human recruiters.

5. Check the story your resume is telling.

Ask AI:

"Based only on this resume, describe this person's career in three sentences."

If the answer isn't the story you intended to tell, your resume needs work.

6. Make sure your LinkedIn profile supports your resume.

Recruiters often compare the two. Differences in titles, dates, responsibilities, or accomplishments create unnecessary questions. Consistency builds credibility.

One final thought.

Don't think of AI as an obstacle between you and your next job.

Think of it as a career coach that works for free, twenty four hours a day. The same technology that screens resumes can also help you build a much stronger one.

The job market is changing rapidly. Those who learn to work with AI instead of simply trying to get past it will have an advantage.
