Megastar LeBron James’ 23rd off-season began with the star informing his former team, the Los Angeles Lakers, that he would not be returning for another season with them. And despite obvious concerns such as his defense, durability, and age, there was no shortage of teams looking to add James to their rosters. In the end, it was his fit with the Philadelphia 76ers that won him over. But maybe something else helped tip the scales.
His hometown team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, were fresh off being swept in the Eastern Conference Finals. The Miami Heat were looking to contend after acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Minnesota Timberwolves, with their latest addition of LaMelo Ball, were also looking to add pieces that would help them go deep into the postseason.
And despite the allure of returning to Cleveland or Miami, or contending in Minnesota, James chose to go to Philadelphia, opening a new chapter in his decorated NBA career in what will be one of his last seasons playing.
So how did Tyrese Maxey motivate James to join the Sixers? And what is the outlook for the team in a highly competitive Eastern Conference?
