In Love With Trees
Since I saw them for the first time
In love with trees since I saw them for the first time
In some shades of green almost eclipsing the sky
In postures defying gravity and most art
Two arms for its branches and two legs for its trunk
One of my first thoughts as a minor was to climb
Sit on a brawny branch and dream I could fly
Yet it is the tree that captured my loving heart
And some of my pain learning it was seen as junk
With youth gone with the wind of adulthood came mime
I want to be like this that and refuse to die
To be not to be for a cockamamie part
In a world where tree numbers were then and now shrunk
This is not a sonnet to be sung in the woods
It is an alexandrine written for trees’ good’s
Μωυσής Οχάνα
Dedicated to a tree from my youth that I will never forget. Show me a tree and I will see life. Show me a cat (or dog) and I will see, eventually, an inferior manipulative animal onto which too many good attributes are projected. If I cannot speak to a human, I would rather listen to a tree.
