My hike today was only 4.45 miles long, but it’s the first miles the Pacific Crest Trail thru-hikers will see as they set out on a 2,650-mile hike from the Mexico border to the border with Canada. Most hikers taking on the Pacific Crest Trail will start this month and over the next couple of months. A journey that will take them many months to complete.
I counted 176 names in the Pacific Crest Trail South Terminus logbook who have already started their journey since 1 January 2026. They hail from all over the United States and several countries. With trail names like Papa Bear, Big Foot 8, Huckleberry, Kronk, Stealth, Moxie, and Busty. They are a mix of women and men, young and old, who collectively have something deep inside that drives them to take on a crazy challenge that seems nearly impossible to most of us.
