AI Is Not Really In The Comment Section

I was randomly reading articles on Medium when I did what I almost always do, scroll straight to the comments section to see who was thinking what I was thinking. Then I came across a comment that struck me as absolutely brilliant I had to write something about it.

AI taking over the writing space is already a conversation some of us are tired of having. So I wasn’t planning to write about it. I was going to write something about softwares that could actually show how much time writers spend working in the editor. But then, my mind flowed in this direction and it couldn’t be helped.

Do you remember when the comment section on almost every platform used to be dry?Nothing interesting ever happened there. Then, somehow, that changed. People started making jokes funnier than the original post. Keyboard comedy became a thing. Conversations moved into completely unrelated topics before finding their way back again.

The comment section became its own form of entertainment. These days, people — including me — sometimes scroll through the comments before deciding whether the content itself is even worth my time.

I think the comment section is one of the few places AI hasn’t completely settled into. Not because AI can’t write comments, but because it struggles to recreate the randomness of people.
Like the time someone wrote, "I’m a Cancer," and I replied, "Praying for your healing." It wasn’t until I saw a random reel about zodiac signs that I realized they weren’t talking about a medical diagnosis.

People laughed. Some kindly explained what the person actually meant. Others... not so kindly. But that’s exactly my point.

The comment section is full of misunderstandings, inside jokes, accidental comedy, and people who are confidently wrong until someone corrects them. It’s unpredictable, and entertaining in a way that feels deeply human.

So, Dear Medium Writers, Can we do a thing?
Can We Comment More?

Medium is full of incredible writers and I’d love it if we used the comment section a little more.

Let’s write:
"Crazzzzzzzzyyy! I was thinking the same thing."
Or write:
"Nice piece."
Or write:
"LOL."

And if something didn’t work...

Let’s write:
"The sentence structure could have been stronger."

Or write:
"The ending lost me."

Or write:
"I loved the idea, but I wanted more."

I’d rather hear honest thoughts from a human than another AI-generated list of "10 Ways to Become a Better Writer."

Not commenting when there’s nothing to say is a completely honest thing to do as well. But when we do have something to say...
Please let’s say it. let’s write it.

I’ll see you in the comment section.
Cheers, friend.
