I did not know there is something called pine dust… You live, you travel, you see things, and you are left wonderstruck once again!

Pine dust? Pine pollen?

Who knew pines could shed like this, blanketing everything in a fine, feathery, floral carpet of dust?

The male pine cones of the Deodar tree release a fine, yellow, powder-like pollen, and the wind drives the pollen everywhere in search of female cones for a blessed union to reproduce and regenerate their population. The yellow colour comes from flavonoids.

This wind-driven pollination process creates a mesmerising plume of pale-yellow dust visible across the state of Himachal Pradesh in Northern India.

Check out a video of the phenomenon.
