Build Your First Claude Code Agent Skill Saved Me Hours (Here’s How I Built It)
Three weeks ago I opened a Claude Code session, pasted the same three paragraphs I always paste (what the project does, which files matter, what I tried last time), and watched Claude ask me a question I had already answered the day before.
That was the moment I stopped being annoyed and started being curious. If I was retyping the same context every single session, there had to be a way to make Claude remember it for me. Not through some third party plugin. Through Claude Code’s own Agent Skills system.
So I built one. A small, boring, incredibly useful skill that keeps a running memory file for each project and loads it automatically. It took me about twenty minutes to get working and it has already saved me hours of re explaining myself. This article walks through exactly how I built it, what I got wrong the first time, and the finished SKILL.md you can copy right now.
What Is a Claude Code Agent Skill, Actually
A Claude Code Agent Skill is just a folder with a file called SKILL.md inside it. That file has two parts. A small block of YAML at the top (called frontmatter) that tells Claude when to use the skill, and plain markdown instructions below it that tell Claude what to do once it decides to use it.
