5 Bands, 5 Q’s: Down For Tomorrow
Welcome to 5 Bands, 5 Q’s! Here, I ask 5 bands the same 5 questions about their plans for the year ahead and then I reconnect with them at the end of the year to reflect on their achievements.
Formed in 2016 on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Down For Tomorrow have released 3 EPs — Golf Is Not A Sport (2017), Thanks To You (2019), and Whatever Happens (2020). They’ve managed to travel and play across the East-Coast of Australia, opening for international acts like The Maine, The Dangerous Summer, and As It Is as well as local acts like Stand Atlantic, British India, Bootleg Rascal, and an appearance at Brisbane’s Mountain Goat Valley Crawl. Despite being “forced off the road” Down For Tomorrow released their third EP — Whatever Happens in October 2020. The band is made up of vocalist and guitarist Cody Stebbings, guitarist Tom Bleasdale, drummer Henry Beard, and bassist Sarah Bonnet.
I spoke to Cody about the band’s main goals for 2021.
1. How would you describe yourself and your band right now at the start of the year?
There are many obstacles that bands all across the country would have to confront right now, so I’d say at the start of this audacious year, we are ready for curveballs and weirdness, both in our personal lives and with our new music currently in production.
2. What are some personal or band related lessons learnt in 2020 that you’ll be carrying with you into 2021?
Nothing is ever permanent, and whatever ideals you have can be swept away by very circumstances that have no conscience and will not stop at the thought of those impacted by it. Also, fortune favours the bold. If you take a less travelled road or a left of field approach to what it is you want to do, it will pay off eventually. So keep going.

3. Who are some people from any department, from anywhere in the world — another band, producer, photographer, designer, etc. — that you wish you could work with this year? Why them?
I never say I wish, because you might just get what you want in a way you never wanted it. But in saying that, I would love to get the chance to write with Machine Gun Kelly. He wrote one of the most interesting and innovative albums of 2020 and his complete changeup has earned the respect of many worldwide listeners. I’d love to take a leaf out of his journal.
4. What are your 5 biggest hopes and goals for 2021? (They can be band related and/or personal, whatever you’re comfortable sharing!)
To learn to count.
To not have to make lists.
To not be a victim of irony.
5. Lastly, what can we expect from you in the coming year?
Expect us to take time coming into our own skin and work as a team of long time friends, to craft enlightening messages over blood pumping music where even we don’t know which way it’s going to go, to savour every moment we get to release a song or play a show or be goofballs on camera. To live in the moment and enjoy the ride.
