She kept telling herself he was busy and that love required patience. Then she realized she was the only one making an effort to keep them together.

When Sophie finally stopped texting Ryan first, she expected him to notice.
She thought he would ask if something was wrong. Maybe he would call her after work. Maybe he would send one of those messages that used to make her smile.
But three days passed.
Then a week.
Ryan did not ask why she had gone quiet.
He did not seem to notice at all.
Sophie sat on her couch one Sunday evening with her phone in her hand. She opened their conversation and looked at the last message she had sent.
“Hope your day went well. Sleep tight.”
It was still there.
