Integrating Styra DAS with Datadog for Monitoring Integrations
Styra DAS provides new Monitoring Integrations under Workspace >> Settings. Select Add data metrics targets to configure the DAS to periodically send the systems and time-series metrics to remote Datadog and SignalFx targets.
Integrate with Datadog
To configure the Monitoring Integrations >> Datadog settings; you need two pieces of information from Datadog, the URL to submit metrics (usually https://api.datadoghq.com/api/v1/series; unless you have a custom URL) and a Datadog api_key which is necessary to submit the metrics. Copy the api_key to the Token field. Select the Refresh interval you would like to report metrics (30 - 3600 seconds).
Datadog
Datadog is a monitoring and analytics tool for information technology (IT) and DevOps teams that can be used to determine performance metrics as well as event monitoring for infrastructure and cloud services. The software can monitor services such as servers, databases, and tools.
Prerequisites:
You can create these free trial accounts by clicking the above links.
Step-1:
By following this step you will create a new system in the Styra-DAS account. If your DAS account is already having a configured system you can skip this process.
Add a system to the Styra-DAS account. You can add a system by following the steps.
Systems are displayed on the left side of the navigation panel. To add a new system, click the + next to SYSTEMS on the left side of the navigation panel.
To install Styra on Envoy, you must copy and paste all the four installation commands from SYSTEMS >> Settings >> Install for your Envoy system into your terminal. This will download and deploy the Styra Local Plane (SLP), OPA config, and Envoy config.
Quickstart provides the link to install an example application. When you run the Envoy example application, the OPA sidecars will pull down the policy from the DAS tenant and start enforcing it.
After installing the example application, we can check the pods are running in the cluster.
Step-2:
This step will guide you through how to Add monitoring Integrations in the Styra-DAS account.

Step-3:
In this step, I will guide you on how to create dashboards in Datadog.
- Login to Datadog account.
- Then go to Metrics >> Graph. Search “styra” in Graph you will find some options related to styra choose any one of the options according to your requirements.
- Then click export the graph to the New Dashboard.
Now you observe the metric in Datadog Dashboard.
Congratulations!! Now you successfully integrated the Datadog to your Styra-DAS account.
Summary:
Created an Envoy system in Styra DAS and downloaded and deployed the Styra Local Plane (SLP), OPA config, and Envoy config on the machine to integrate with Styra DAS. Installed sample application in the cluster and added ingress and egress policies in Styra DAS. Enforced, Validated, and Published the ingress and egress rules to generate some metrics in Styra-DAS. And added a Datadog monitoring Integration to the Styra-DAS tenant. Then created a metrics Dashboard in the Datadog account.
