About nine months before the Soviet Union dissolved, cosmonaut Musa Manarov captured video of a cylinder- or rod-shaped object shadowing the space station Mir from an unknown distance.

Manarov was a Soviet hero and a veteran flight engineer with more than 500 days in space. While filming an approaching Soyuz capsule, he spotted an object in his camera lens.

“Initially it seemed to me that something had separated from the craft…” Manarov explained in an international documentary (see below).

Seeing the object compelled Manarov to quickly check Mir to make sure nothing had broken off the space station.

“…later when I examined the craft, I realized there was nothing that could have come loose,” he reported.

Its brightness intensified

According to Manarov, the rod-shaped object spun and moved away as it brightened.
