Falling for Fall
Museums, gallery openings, upstate house tours and cozy dinners — here’s how I’m planning to spend fall in NYC
Don’t get me wrong, summer has been great, but there’s nothing quite like fall in New York City. And while I’m still holding off on packing away all my summer clothes, I’m definitely ready for layering, crisp mornings and getting cozy.
The first properly brisk day had me so excited that I started putting together a list of things I want to do this season. So, here’s a little peek at what’s on my fall list — besides the obvious apple picking and foliage hunting in Central Park.
Start with breakfast at Stars. The West Village wine bar, designed by Studio Valle de Valle, has started serving breakfast on weekends. I’m always happy when a place I already love gives me another excuse to go, and a flat white and beignet feels like a pretty good way to start a fall morning.
For dinner, head to Gem Home, the Nolita café and home shop that now has dinner back on their menu. French-leaning, seasonal, and open Wednesday through Saturday through the end of the year.
Afterwards go for a Martini at Bar Leone, the new two-story bar in SoHo (formerly Her Name Was Carmen) designed by Studio Bond.
I’m sure you’ve already heard, but menswear shop and wine bar Million Goods opened its new flagship in Fort Greene earlier this month. I have yet to pop in, but will report back soon.

With so many exhibitions opening right after Labor Day, there’s a plethora of new shows to see right now. I’m planning to see Mineral Meridian by Heath Wae at Carvalho Gallery, Mirrors by Peter Rippon at Jacqueline Sullivan Gallery, Landmarks by Alix Vernet at Chapter NY, and Waterloo! at 56 Henry next.
And if you’re looking for more galleries to add to your list, I’ve also put together a guide to some of my favorite design galleries in NYC: Part 1 and Part 2.
The Noguchi Museum is worth a trip in every season, but there’s something particularly nice about visiting in fall. The museum has an unparalleled collection of Noguchi’s work, and some of it extends into the serene garden outside. Crisp air, sculpture and quiet — what more could you want?
The last couple of weeks have also brought a few noteworthy fashion openings. Acne Studios, Róhe, Victoria Beckham, Third of June and Magda Butrym are all worth a trip for the interiors alone.
Fall also means I finally get to cozy up on the couch and read or flip through photo books. These are the design books currently on my radar:
- Post Company: Character Studies
- Other Lives, Other Stories: Interior Portraits
- Tara Bernerd: A Design Journey
- The Intersection of Art and Design by Sarah Sherman Samuel
Speaking of reading, I’m eyeing this portable lamp I spotted at Quarters — perfect for carrying from the couch to bed with you.
Basically, I’m ready. Bring on the sweaters, moody lighting and long walks around the city.
