About

Cut infrastructure spend by 33%, reduce data center refresh costs by 75%, and get back 30% of your engineering time with smarter resource management. Increasingly, complex applications run your business. And they can run your teams ragged trying to stay ahead of dynamic demand. When application performance drops, teams are often reacting at human speed, after the fact. To avoid disruption, you may overprovision resource allocations, making estimates that are often costly and don’t always pay off. The IBM® Turbonomic® Application Resource Management (ARM) platform allows you to eliminate this guesswork, saving both time and money. You can continuously automate critical actions in real time—and without human intervention—that proactively deliver the most efficient use of compute, storage and network resources to your apps at every layer of the stack.

Pros & Cons from Real Users

Pros

  • The intuitive dashboard, real-time network monitoring, and timely alerts help simplify network management and quickly identify and troubleshoot issues.
  • I use OpManager Nexus to monitor about 100 network switches, both Layer 2 and Layer 3, at a large R&D campus. Three features matter most to me in daily use: 1. Down alerts: I've configured alert rules so I get an automatic notification whenever a switch goes down, without having to check devices manually. 2. Daily alarm report: every morning I receive an email listing all current alarms, which gives me a quick start-of-day view of the network's health. 3. Scheduled configuration backup: I've set up automatic monthly backups of all the switches, so configurations are saved without manual effort. 4. AD/RADIUS integration was really easy and helps me in keeping the application secure from unauthorised login. I've been using it for 4 months as a network administrator at IndianOil Corporation and so far the overall performance of the application is good. The pricing is also competitive.
  • ManageEngine OpManager provides comprehensive network and server monitoring with an intuitive interface and strong alerting capabilities. The dashboards are customizable, deployment is straightforward, and the reporting features help our IT team proactively identify and resolve issues before they impact business operations. It supports a wide range of devices and integrates well with existing infrastructure.
  • Customized Dashboard that provides an overview of all devices in a single dashboard. Makes device monitoring and management easier. Improves visibility into device status and performance. Customizable based on user and business requirements.
  • The key advantages of having an operations manager include:Increased Productivity: They map out existing workflows to identify bottlenecks and implement standardized processes that help employees work faster and more efficiently.Reduced Waste and Costs: By closely monitoring budgets, inventory, and supply chains, they minimize losses from overproduction, excess inventory, and equipment damage.Improved Product and Service Quality: They enforce strict quality control standards and procedures, ensuring that products are safe, durable, and consistent.Higher Customer Satisfaction: Operations managers align production and delivery times to customer expectations, which enhances the company's reputation and goodwill.Strategic Alignment: They translate high-level company goals into daily, actionable tasks, ensuring the organization reaches its quarterly and yearly targets.

Cons

  • Some advanced features require additional configuration, and the licensing can be expensive as the network grows.
  • We use OpManager Nexus to monitor around 100 network switches, a mix of L2 and L3, at our R&D centre in Faridabad. Getting it configured was the hardest part. Commissioning wasn't a one-sitting job. It took us several sessions to get discovery, alerting and everything else working the way we wanted, so plan for real time up front rather than expecting a quick install-and-go. Once it was settled, though, day-to-day use has been smooth. Alerts come through automatically as configured, mostly when a switch goes down, so we hear about problems without watching a dashboard. I also get a daily morning email listing the alarms, which is a handy way to start the day. We've scheduled automatic monthly backups of all the switch configurations too, and that's one less manual task to remember. My main criticism is that the platform doesn't always feel like one product. Modules like Applications Manager and Network Configuration Manager (NCM) can feel like separate tools stitched together rather than parts of a single seamless platform. Moving between them reminds you of that. Overall, a solid fit for monitoring a mid-sized switch estate, as long as you budget time for the initial commissioning.
  • The initial configuration for advanced monitoring scenarios can be time consuming. Some features require additional licensing, and large environments may need performance tuning to optimize dashboard responsiveness.
  • May require initial setup and configuration. A large number of devices may make the dashboard look crowded. Customization can increase complexity. May require additional resources to maintain and update. Performance could be affected when displaying data from many devices simultaneously.
  • High Stress and Pressure: Because operations managers are responsible for keeping the business running smoothly, they face constant pressure to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and meet strict deadlines.Poor Work-Life Balance: The role often requires long hours, including nights and weekends. Managers may need to handle irregular schedules and be on-call to deal with emergencies.Heavy Accountability: The buck stops with the operations manager. If there are supply chain failures, budget overruns, or departmental conflicts, they bear the brunt of the responsibility and accountability.Multitasking Burnout: Because they oversee multiple administrative departments (such as HR, IT, and logistics), they must juggle a dizzying array of tasks simultaneously, which can be mentally exhausting.Resistance to Change: Implementing best practices and optimizing workflows is a major part of the job, but it is often met with pushback and strong opposition from staff.Broad Scope of Responsibility: The role requires cross-functional knowledge across many domains, making it difficult to specialize and sometimes leading to a lack of personal brand building outside of the company.
