When you’re invited to join a space, you can preview the space and view its message history.
When you leave a space, you can’t:
- Rejoin unless another member adds or invites you.
- Get updates on active conversation threads.
If you rejoin a space, you can view all message history. If someone removes you from a space, you’ll need to be invited again.

Join a space
Important: If the space owner or manager turns off the request option, you can’t request to join a space.
- On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
- In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
- On the left, click New chat
Browse spaces

- Search for a space.
- The spaces that you're invited to appear at the top of the list.
- Click the space name or View.
- If the space is open, click Join. You can also preview the messages.
- If the space is private or discoverable and the space allows it, you can submit a request to join.
Tip: If you request to join a space, your username, email address, and avatar are shared with the space owner and manager once they receive your request. Some spaces may not allow requests to join.
Leave a space
- On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
- In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
- Next to a space name, click More options

- In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
- On the left, click New chat
