Catch up on email threads with AI Overview conversation summaries

To catch up on long email threads, Gemini in Gmail can:

  • Generate an AI Overview at the top of the thread that synthesizes key points and replies in the conversation.
  • Suggest reminders for tasks with a due date.

What you need

Additional requirement

  • In Gmail settings, turn on Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet and Smart features in Google Workspace. Learn more about smart features in Google Workspace.
    • If you do not want AI Overview conversation summaries, you can turn off smart features. However, this also disables other tools, such as AI-assisted writing and proofreading, across Gmail and other Workspace apps.

Summarize an email thread

  1. On your computer, go to Gmail.
  2. In Gmail, open an email thread.
  3. At the top of the thread, click Summarize this email.

Tips:

  • To hide the AI Overview, click Minimize Up arrow.
  • If you notice anything incorrect about the AI Overview, below the card, click Bad suggestion .

Set a reminder for tasks

If an email thread mentions a due date with a task required from you, you can create a reminder from the AI Overview.

  1. On your computer, go to Gmail.
  2. Open a thread with an AI Overview and a task with a deadline.
  3. At the top of your email, next to the task with a deadline, click Remind me.
  4. To edit the date, click Edit reminder.

After you create a task:

  • To find your task, go to:
  • In the AI Overview, to:
    • Change reminder details: Click Edit reminder.
    • Complete the reminder: Click Mark complete.
    • Reopen the reminder: Click Mark incomplete.

Tips:

  • When the due date arrives, the reminder shows at the top of the Gmail inbox.
  • The card remains visible for 4 days or until dismissed.
