If you’re planning to become an AI Security Engineer in 2027, I have some advice that might save you months of wasted effort.

Stop memorising the OWASP Top 10 and assuming you’ve learned AI security. Stop watching endless prompt injection demonstrations without understanding how the underlying application works. And please don’t assume that collecting three or four AI certifications will automatically make you an AI Security Engineer.

Now, don’t misunderstand me. OWASP is an excellent resource, and certifications certainly have their place. I’ve earned quite a few myself over the past two decades. But there’s a difference between understanding a security concept and being able to apply it.

I’ve worked in cybersecurity for more than two decades, and I’ve seen this problem repeatedly. Someone can explain SQL injection perfectly but struggle to find it in an application. Another person might hold several cloud certifications but have little experience securing an actual cloud environment.
