AMD Begins Staging Graphics Driver Changes For Linux 7.3

In addition to Intel beginning to volley graphics driver patches for Linux 7.3, this week AMD also began sending out their pull requests of "new stuff" to DRM-Next for the Linux 7.3 kernel cycle.

On Thursday AMDGPU/AMDKFD maintainer Alex Deucher of AMD sent out the first pull request of new feature material of kernel graphics/compute driver changes intended for this kernel version later in 2026.

Some of the early changes for AMDGPU and AMDKFD in Linux 7.3 include implementing compute pipe reset support for being able to reset compute pipes when hitting issues on GFX11 (RDNA3) and GFX12 (RDNA4) hardware. There are also user queue "UserQ" updates, RAS updates, the ability to parse display panel type information from DisplayID, DCN 4.2 IP updates, GFX 11.7 updates for that RDNA "4m" GPU, and an assortment of other updates. Plus fixes for 8K display panels, backlights, and various other issues.

There are also a number of code hardening updates for this C driver with improved bounds checking for vBIOS parsing, various other boundary checks added, etc. The AMDKFD driver is also hardened too with CRIU boundary checking.

This pull request for Linux 7.3 also includes the work from Timur Kristóf of Valve's Linux graphics team for soft reset and improving GPU recovery on early Radeon GCN GPUs.

The AMDKFD compute driver also now allows applications to opt out of SIGBUS on fatal errors and various fixes. ROCm is already prepared for the SIGBUS handling change.
