How Much Do Our Kids Actually Need Us?
The ultimate parenting paradox
Read for free here.
Kids. Where would we be without them?
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve absolutely loved having children. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for as long as I can remember. They’re the most important part of my life, even though, at times, they absolutely do my head in.
I love having them around, even when I’d happily return them for a refund. They’re still the greatest gift in my life to this day, and being a parent really is such a wonderful part of life.
Okay, so that’s enough of the sappy shit.
When they were toddlers, they needed us to do pretty much everything for them. But as they get older, they need us less and less. I like to think they are now pretty competent at wiping their own arses!
The question I’ve been asking myself recently, as my kids get older and more independent, is how much do they really need me?
Maybe they need us differently at different stages in life.
At the moment, I feel like I’m at the stage where I’m either an Uber driver, an ATM, a battering ram for a shitload of emotions, or some weird buffet of all of the above, all wrapped up in a thick dusting of moodiness and attitude.
