Sometimes I read something that makes me feel less alone. Makes me feel more seen, heard, and understood. Makes me feel like I’m on the right path.

It’s one of the reasons why Margaret Atwood said, “A word after word after word is power.” And why Bruce Lee added, “Words are energy and they cast spells, that’s why it’s called spelling.”

Yesterday I read two sentences from Fyodor Dostoevsky that did exactly that. Before I explain why, here they are in all their glory:

“I think the most beautiful souls are the ones that remain gentle after everything they have survived. They have every reason to become cold, yet they still choose kindness, still choose love, still believe people can be better.”

Before I read this, I was listening to the news. There were stories of bomb attacks, murder cases, and corruption charges. There were cases of AI plagiarism, job loss statistics, and accounts of homicide and genocide.

I was left feeling numb. There was no way I could take in everything that was coming at me, so I dissociated. A few seconds later, more corrosive thoughts started to occupy my mind — thoughts of anger, hopelessness, and confusion.
