Midjourney 8.1 Guide: Prompts, Omni Reference & Parameters
Midjourney 8.2 prompt guide: new default model, Omni Reference (--oref), --hd and --sd, --raw, V8.1/V7 compatibility, video costs, and every parameter that changed.
Updated July 25, 2026
July 2026 Update: V8.2 is the default Midjourney model as of July 24, 2026; V8.1 stays selectable and V8.0 Alpha has been retired. Midjourney describes V8.2 as “an update focused on aesthetics, image quality, and Personalization,” with images that are “more creative, bold, sophisticated, and edgy” and with the random low-quality generations that used to slip through “dramatically reduced.”3839 Personalization is the headline: V8.2 reads your aesthetic far better on profiles with a lot of accumulated points, and building a new profile now draws on “a much larger and improved pool of images to choose from.”3839 Your existing work carries over — V7 Personalization profiles are compatible with V8.2, and your Global V7 Profile works in both V8.1 and V8.2; there is still no Global V8 Profile, though you can create additional V8 profiles.40 V8.1 is now a selectable model rather than the default: the Version docs record that it “released on April 14, 2026, and was the default version from June 10 to July 23, 2026” (the guide previously dated that switch June 11 — corrected here).39 V8.0 Alpha is gone: it “was available on the Midjourney Alpha website until July 24, 2026,” and while V8.0 images stay in your website gallery, “the version is no longer available for use.”39 The V8 family shares one compatibility profile — the rebuilt chart merges V8.1 and V8.2 into a single column — so both give you Raw, style references, image prompts, image weights, personalization, moodboards, seeds (99% identical rather than exact), chaos, stylize, weird, the No parameter (--no), --exp, HD at 2048px without a separate upscaler, and a 14:1 max aspect ratio that tightens to 4:1 for HD; both exclude Omni Reference and Omni Weight (which route through V7), Character Reference, multi-prompts, Quality, Niji, and Turbo.39 Corrected costs: HD costs 1.3 GPU minutes and SD costs 0.8 GPU minutes — the guide previously said 1.33 and “less than 1.”39 One caveat worth knowing before you commit to HD: running Pan, Zoom Out, or Edit/Vary Region on an HD image downscales the result to SD, and you have to re-upscale to get back to 2048px.39 Draft Mode is the one open question — the rebuilt chart marks it unsupported on the merged V8.1/V8.2 column while the Draft Mode article, last edited two weeks before V8.2 shipped, still says Draft Mode works on V7 and V8.1; the practical read is that Draft Mode and its --sref random 24-image sampler did not carry to V8.2, so select --v 8.1 explicitly when you want them (see Draft Mode).3941 So the practical workflow is: use V8.2 as your default for aesthetics, Personalization, and finished work; drop to --v 8.1 for Draft Mode exploration; and use V7 when you need full feature coverage, Omni Reference (--oref), Quality values, or Niji-adjacent workflows. Niji 7 (January 9, 2026) remains the anime/manga lane; Personalization and Moodboards are supported on Niji 7, while --cref remains a Niji 6 / V6-era Character Reference control rather than the V7 path.317 Video, Moodboards, and V7 features remain current. See Changelog for full history.1
I’ve spent hundreds of hours testing Midjourney across every version, parameter combination, and style direction. This guide distills that experience into the comprehensive reference I wish existed when I started. Whether you’re crafting your first prompt or pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, the techniques are here.
Midjourney isn’t a magic prompt-to-image converter. It’s a sophisticated visual language system that responds to specific patterns, respects certain hierarchies, and rewards those who understand its architecture. The difference between generic AI art and stunning, intentional imagery is understanding these patterns.
The key insight: V7 fundamentally changed how prompts work. The old keyword-soup approach (“beautiful, stunning, 8k, detailed, masterpiece”) actively degrades your results. V7 understands natural language—write prompts like you’re describing a photograph to a skilled cinematographer, not tagging a stock photo database.
This guide covers everything from first installation to advanced techniques that most users never discover. Every parameter is documented with actual ranges, real examples, and the edge cases that trip up experienced users.

What is Midjourney?
Midjourney is a generative AI system that creates images from text descriptions. Unlike traditional image editing or stock photography, you describe what you want to see, and Midjourney generates original images that match your vision.
What makes Midjourney different:
| Aspect | Midjourney | Competitors |
|---|---|---|
| Image Quality | Industry-leading aesthetics | Variable |
| Natural Language | V7 understands full sentences | Often keyword-dependent |
| Photorealism | Exceptional with V7 | Good to excellent |
| Anime/Illustration | Niji models optimized | General-purpose |
| Video | Native support (June 2025) | Requires separate tools |
| Community | Integrated sharing/discovery | Varies |
What you can create:
- Photorealistic images: Portraits, products, architecture, nature
- Illustrations: Concept art, book covers, editorial
- Anime and manga: Via specialized Niji models
- Abstract art: Experimental, surreal compositions
- Videos: 5-21 second animated clips from images
What Midjourney isn’t:
- Not a photo editor (use Photoshop for that)
- Not a character-consistent system (yet—improving rapidly)
- Not a tool for recreating specific copyrighted characters
- Not free (subscriptions from $10-120/month)
Getting Started
Account Setup
- Visit midjourney.com
- Sign in with Discord or create an account
- Choose a subscription:
| Plan | Price | Fast GPU | Relax GPU | Video Relax |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $10/mo | 3.3 hrs | — | — |
| Standard | $30/mo | 15 hrs | Unlimited | — |
| Pro | $60/mo | 30 hrs | Unlimited | Yes |
| Mega | $120/mo | 60 hrs | Unlimited | Yes |
Expert tip: Start with Standard ($30/mo). The unlimited Relax mode is essential for experimentation—you’ll burn through Fast hours quickly while learning.
Your First Prompt
Open the web interface at midjourney.com/imagine and type:
A golden retriever sitting in autumn leaves, soft afternoon sunlight
That’s it. No special syntax needed. V7 understands natural language.
What you’ll get: Four variations of a golden retriever in fall scenery. From here, you can:
- Upscale: Click U1-U4 to generate a high-resolution version
- Vary: Click V1-V4 to create subtle variations
- Reroll: Generate four new variations with the same prompt
Web vs Discord
| Feature | Web Interface | Discord |
|---|---|---|
| Ease of use | Easier | Steeper learning curve |
| Image organization | Built-in gallery | Scattered in channels |
| Video generation | Full support | Supported, less visual |
| Prompt editing | Visual interface | Text commands |
| Community | Explore tab | Channel browsing |
| Recommendation | Start here | Power users |
The web interface is still the easiest starting point because organization, prompt editing, video settings, and playback are more visual. Discord remains useful for power users and supports video generation through its own controls and video-specific parameters.32
Core Concepts
How Prompts Work
Every Midjourney prompt is processed through a pipeline:
Your Text Prompt
↓
[Text Encoder] → Converts words to mathematical embeddings
↓
[Diffusion Model] → Generates image from noise, guided by embeddings
↓
[Upscaler] → Increases resolution and detail
↓
Final Image
What this means for you:
- Word order matters: Early words have more influence than later ones
- Specificity wins: “golden hour sunlight casting long shadows” beats “nice lighting”
- Contradictions confuse: “dark, bright, moody, cheerful” cancels itself out
- Less is often more: 50-150 tokens typically outperforms 300+ tokens
The Token Economy
Midjourney doesn’t see your words—it sees tokens (roughly word pieces).
| Token Count | Effect | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 10-30 | Very open interpretation | Abstract, experimental |
| 30-80 | Balanced control | Most prompts |
| 80-150 | Detailed control | Specific scenes |
| 150+ | Diminishing returns | May cause conflicts |
Expert tip: If your prompt exceeds 150 tokens, you’re probably over-specifying. Cut the adjective spam.
Quality Signals
V7 responds strongly to certain descriptive patterns:
Lighting (most impactful): - “golden hour light casting long shadows across weathered stone” - “Rembrandt lighting with soft fill from camera left” - “bioluminescent glow illuminating the fog”
Materials and textures: - “oxidized copper with verdigris patina” - “worn leather showing decades of use” - “translucent jade catching the light”
Atmosphere and mood: - “melancholic twilight atmosphere” - “oppressive industrial ambiance” - “ethereal dreamlike quality”
Technical camera terms: - “shot on medium format, shallow depth of field” - “85mm lens, f/1.8 aperture” - “anamorphic lens flare, 2.39:1 aspect”
The Prompt Hierarchy
Every effective prompt follows a hierarchy. Words at the top have the most influence.
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ 1. SUBJECT (who/what) ← Most important │
│ "elderly fisherman" │
├─────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ 2. SUBJECT DETAILS (descriptors) │
│ "weathered face, silver beard, kind eyes" │
├─────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ 3. CONTEXT (where/when) │
│ "on a wooden dock at dawn" │
├─────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ 4. STYLE/MOOD (how it feels) │
│ "documentary photography, contemplative" │
├─────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ 5. TECHNICAL (camera/lighting) │
│ "shot on Leica, natural morning light" │
├─────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ 6. PARAMETERS (--ar, --s, etc.) ← Fine-tuning │
│ "--ar 3:2 --s 100 --v 7" │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Prompt Template
[SUBJECT] [SUBJECT DETAILS], [CONTEXT], [STYLE/MOOD], [TECHNICAL] --parameters
Example applying the hierarchy:
An elderly fisherman with a weathered face and silver beard, standing on a
wooden dock at dawn, documentary photography style, contemplative mood,
shot on Leica M11 with natural morning light, soft mist rising from the water
--ar 3:2 --s 100 --v 7
What most users miss: They start with style (“beautiful cinematic photo of…”) instead of subject. V7 weights early tokens heavily—lead with what you actually want to see.
Version Selection
V8.2 (default since July 24, 2026)
V8.2 released as the default version on July 24, 2026, replacing V8.1. Midjourney frames it as “an update focused on aesthetics, image quality, and Personalization” rather than a speed or capability release — the model surface is the same as V8.1, the taste is different.3839
Strengths:
- Images are “more creative, bold, sophisticated, and edgy” than V8.1’s more familiar V7-spirited default3839
- The random low-quality generation that used to slip into a grid is, per Midjourney, “dramatically reduced”38
- Personalization “understands” your aesthetic much better, especially on profiles with a large number of accumulated points39
- Creating a new Personalization profile for V8.2 draws on “a much larger and improved pool of images to choose from”39
- Inherits the whole V8.1 feature surface: HD at 2048px without an upscaler step, Raw, style references, image prompts and weights, moodboards, chaos, stylize, weird, --no, and --exp39
Personalization on V8.2: - V7 Personalization profiles are compatible with V8.2 — nothing you built needs rebuilding40 - Your Global V7 Profile works in both V8.1 and V8.240 - There is still no Global V8 Profile; you can create additional V8 profiles, but the global one remains the V7 profile40 - New profiles are created against your current default version setting, so set the version you want before clicking New Profile40
Usage:
a weathered lighthouse on volcanic cliffs at golden hour,
dramatic clouds, crashing waves --v 8.2 --hd --p
When to use V8.2: - As your default — it is the default, and the aesthetic and Personalization gains are the whole point of the release - When you want a bolder, less safe look than V8.1 produces - When you have a well-fed Personalization profile and want the model to actually use it - For finished work where the reduced rate of low-quality outliers saves you re-rolls
When to drop back to V8.1:
- Draft Mode exploration, including the --sref random sampler — see the compatibility conflict in Draft Mode
- Any workflow already tuned against V8.1’s calmer default aesthetic
V8.1 (default June 10 – July 23, 2026)
V8.1 is available on midjourney.com and Discord. It became the default version on June 10, 2026, replacing V7, and held that slot until V8.2 took over on July 23–24, 2026; the Version docs record it as “released on April 14, 2026, and was the default version from June 10 to July 23, 2026.”39 It remains fully selectable, and the compatibility chart now treats V8.1 and V8.2 as a single column — anything below that is not marked V8.1-only applies to both.39
Strengths:
- Standard jobs render about 4-5x faster than earlier versions2
- Dramatically improved instruction-following and coherence
- Native 2048px HD images without a separate upscaler step2
- Best text rendering yet (use “quotes” in prompts)
- Enhanced aesthetic understanding through personalization, srefs, and moodboards
- Raw, style references, image prompts, image weights, personalization, moodboards, seeds, chaos, stylize, weird, the No parameter (--no), and --exp remain available in V8.12
Generation modes:
| Mode | Speed / cost | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| SD / standard | 0.8 GPU minutes per job | Exploration, cost control |
--hd |
1.3 GPU minutes per job | Native 2048px image output |
| Fast | V8.1 standard jobs render about 4-5x faster than earlier versions | Default V8-family workflow |
| Relax | Available on V8.1 and V8.2 according to the Version compatibility chart | Low-priority experimentation |
HD caveat — edits knock HD back down to SD. Per the Version docs: “Using any of our inpainting or outpainting tools (Pan, Zoom Out, Edit/Vary Region) on HD images will downscale the resulting images to SD. You can use the Upscale options to return these images to HD resolution.”39 So an HD render that then goes through Pan, Zoom Out, or Edit/Vary Region comes back at standard resolution; plan an explicit upscale step at the end of any edit-heavy HD workflow rather than assuming the 2048px output survives the round trip. Max aspect ratio also tightens under HD: 14:1 normally, 4:1 for HD.39
Compatibility notes (these apply to the merged V8.1 & V8.2 column unless noted):
- The V8 family does not support the older Midjourney upscalers as a separate step; generate HD directly instead. The chart lists upscaler support as SD images and HD images at 2048px, with HD carrying the 1.3-minute GPU cost.39
- Omni Reference (--oref) and Omni Weight (--ow) are annotated “(Uses V7)” on the V8 column rather than simply unsupported — the parameters work, but the job is executed by V7, so expect V7’s look, not V8.2’s.392829
- Character Reference (--cref) and Character Weight (--cw) remain unsupported on both V7 and the V8 family; --cref is a Midjourney/Niji V6 control.39
- The Quality parameter is not supported on V8.1 or V8.2; use V7 for --q 2 / --q 4 workflows.3930
- The No parameter (--no) is supported across V6, V7, and the V8 family.39
- Multi-prompts are not listed as V8-family compatible.39
- Seeds are supported but approximate: the chart annotates the Seed parameter “(99% identical)” on the V8 column, so a reused seed reproduces a near-match, not a byte-identical render.39
- Niji and Turbo are not V8-family paths.39
- Draft Mode reached V8.1 on June 16, 2026 — 24 images per draft, click Vary to render any at full quality, at half the fast-hours of a V8.1 SD job.36 Its status on V8.2 is contested in Midjourney’s own docs; see Draft Mode for the conflict and the workaround.3941
New UI features: - Conversational Mode for natural-language flow—describe ideas in text or voice and the AI writes the prompts (supported on V7 and the V8 family; the rebuilt chart keeps Conversational Mode checked on the merged V8.1 & V8.2 column even as it un-checks Draft Mode — see Conversational Mode)3439 - “Grid Mode” for focusing on large image sets - Settings in sidebars (no longer blocking your view)
Usage:
a weathered lighthouse on volcanic cliffs at golden hour,
dramatic clouds, crashing waves --v 8.1 --hd
V8.1 prompt tips:
- Use --raw when literal prompt control matters; Raw turns down Midjourney’s default aesthetic interpretation.31
- Specify cinematographic lighting precisely: “single overhead key light with no fill, hard shadows” beats “dramatic lighting”22
- Reference photographers/directors by name for style anchoring (e.g., “Annie Leibovitz portraiture,” “Roger Deakins cinematography”)22
- Describe medium precisely: “35mm film photograph, grain, Kodak Portra 400 palette” narrows the solution space22
When to use V8.1:
- When you want Draft Mode or the --sref random sampler, which the rebuilt chart no longer shows on V8.23941
- When you want the fastest generation
- For text-heavy images
- When coherence matters most
- To take advantage of native 2048px image generation
- When an existing pipeline is tuned to V8.1’s calmer aesthetic and V8.2’s bolder default would be a regression for you
V7 (Default June 2025 – June 2026)
V7 was Midjourney’s default model from June 17, 2025 until V8.1 replaced it as the default on June 10, 2026 (the V7 entry in the Version docs closes its reign on June 9, 2026); it remains fully selectable and the safest broad production choice for full feature coverage. Released April 3, 2025 and made default June 17, 2025.3935
Strengths: - Natural language understanding (write sentences, not keywords) - Excellent photorealism - Strong text rendering - Better human anatomy (hands, bodies) - Improved spatial relationships - Personalization enabled by default - Full V7 control surface: Omni Reference, Quality values, multi-prompts, No parameter, and Niji workflows where relevant228
Generation modes:
| Mode | Speed | Cost | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turbo | Fastest | 2x normal | Final renders when time matters |
| Fast | Normal | 1x | Standard workflow |
| Relax | Queued | Included | Exploration, learning |
| Draft | 10x faster | 0.5x | Rapid iteration |
When to use V7: - Photorealistic images - Any prompt with complex natural language - Text rendering - When quality matters most
Niji 7 (January 2026)
Niji 7 is the specialized anime/manga model, released January 9, 2026.3
Strengths:
- Crystal-clear eyes, reflections, and fine background details3
- Improved coherence for complex poses and multi-arm setups
- More literal prompt interpretation—handles specific color positions and hairstyles precisely
- Better text rendering
- Enhanced --sref performance with significantly reduced style drift3
- Clean, flat linework aesthetic designed to highlight improved line quality
Limitations:
- --cref NOT supported—the team hints at a “more powerful secret surprise” alternative3
- Personalization (--p) and Moodboards fully supported as of February 26, 202617
- More literal than previous Niji versions—adjust vibey prompts
Coming Soon:
- New character reference system to replace --cref (expected to exceed --cref capabilities)
Usage:
A determined young mage with crimson hair, casting fire magic,
intense expression, ancient library background --niji 7
When to use Niji 7: - Anime and manga-style illustrations - Character design - Eastern aesthetic illustrations - When you want cleaner linework
Niji 6 (Legacy)
Still available for backward compatibility.
When to use Niji 6:
- You need style presets (--style expressive, --style cute, --style scenic)
- Your workflow depends on --cref
- You prefer the softer, less literal interpretation
Styles:
--niji 6 --style expressive # Dynamic, stylized
--niji 6 --style cute # Kawaii aesthetic
--niji 6 --style scenic # Background focus
--niji 6 --style original # Classic Niji look
Version Comparison
Midjourney’s own chart now collapses V8.1 and V8.2 into a single “V8.1 & V8.2” column, so the two models differ in aesthetic and Personalization quality rather than in feature support — with Draft Mode the one disputed cell.39

On the Draft Mode row: the rebuilt compatibility chart marks Draft Mode unsupported on the merged V8.1 & V8.2 column, while Midjourney’s Draft & Conversational Modes article — last edited July 9, 2026, before V8.2 shipped — still reads “Draft mode is compatible with Midjourney versions 7 and 8.1.”3941 Nothing in either document says V8.1 lost Draft Mode. The full reasoning and the workaround are in Draft Mode.
V8 / V8.1 / V8.2 Timeline

Composition Impact
Aspect ratio isn’t just dimensions—it fundamentally changes composition.
Wide ratios (16:9, 21:9): - Emphasize environment and context - Natural for landscapes, cityscapes - Cinematic feel - Subjects become part of a scene
Tall ratios (4:5, 9:16): - Focus attention on subject - Natural for portraits, products - Intimate feel - More vertical information
Expert tip: For cinematic portraits, try 4:5 instead of the obvious 16:9. You get the subject-focused framing of portrait with enough context for storytelling.
Stylization
The --s parameter controls how much artistic interpretation V7 applies. Range: 0-1000. Default: 100.
Stylization Ranges
| Range | Effect | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 0-50 | Minimal interpretation | Product photos, technical accuracy |
| 50-150 | Balanced (default) | General use, portraits |
| 150-300 | Noticeable style | Artistic photos, mood pieces |
| 300-500 | Strong style | Illustrations, conceptual |
| 500-1000 | Very stylized | Abstract, experimental |
Visual Examples
Portrait of a woman, soft window light --s 50
# Result: Clean, realistic, minimal embellishment
Portrait of a woman, soft window light --s 250
# Result: More artistic interpretation, enhanced mood
Portrait of a woman, soft window light --s 600
# Result: Distinctly stylized, dreamlike quality
Decision Framework
Use low stylization (0-100) when: - Creating product photography - You want photorealistic accuracy - Technical/documentation images - The prompt should be interpreted literally
Use medium stylization (100-300) when: - General creative work - Editorial photography - You want enhancement without extremes - Balanced between realistic and artistic
Use high stylization (300+) when: - Creating illustrations or concept art - Abstract or experimental work - You want Midjourney’s aesthetic to dominate - Pushing creative boundaries
Stylization + Style Raw
For maximum photorealism, combine low stylization with --style raw:
Portrait of a businessman, office background --s 50 --style raw --v 7
--style raw tells V7 to minimize its own aesthetic interpretation, giving you results closer to literal prompt fulfillment.
Chaos and Weird
Chaos (–chaos 0-100)
Controls variation between the four generated images. Default: 0.
| Value | Effect |
|---|---|
| 0 | Very similar outputs |
| 25 | Slight variations |
| 50 | Moderate variety |
| 75 | High variety |
| 100 | Maximum unpredictability |
When to use chaos:
- Exploration phase: --chaos 50-75 to see diverse interpretations
- Final render: --chaos 0-25 for consistent results
- Finding direction: High chaos early, low chaos for refinement
Weird (–weird 0-3000)
Introduces unconventional, unexpected aesthetics. Default: 0.
| Range | Effect |
|---|---|
| 0 | Standard aesthetics |
| 100-500 | Subtle quirks |
| 500-1000 | Noticeable strangeness |
| 1000-2000 | Very unusual |
| 2000-3000 | Maximum weirdness |
When to use weird: - Surreal or dreamlike imagery - Breaking out of generic AI aesthetics - Concept art exploration - When “normal” feels too predictable
Combining Chaos and Weird
--chaos 50 --weird 500 # Varied outputs, each slightly quirky
--chaos 100 --weird 0 # Wild variations, normal aesthetic
--chaos 25 --weird 2000 # Similar outputs, all very weird
Expert tip: High weird can produce genuinely unusual imagery, but it’s inconsistent. Use it for exploration, then dial back for final renders.
Experimental Aesthetics
The --exp parameter adds enhanced detail, dynamics, and tone-mapped effects. Range: 0-100. Default: 0.
Effect Levels
| Value | Effect | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Off (default) | Standard rendering |
| 5 | Subtle enhancement | Safe to combine with other params |
| 10 | Noticeable detail boost | Good starting point |
| 25 | Strong effect | Recommended max for mixing |
| 50 | Very strong | May reduce prompt accuracy |
| 100 | Maximum | Can overwhelm –stylize and –p |
What –exp Does
- More detailed textures and surfaces
- More dynamic, punchy compositions
- Tone-mapped HDR-like appearance
- Enhanced visual interest
Recommended Combinations
--exp 10 --s 200 # Enhanced detail, balanced style
--exp 25 --s 100 # Strong exp, controlled stylize
--exp 5 --style raw # Subtle boost for photorealism
Warning: Parameter Conflicts
At high values (above 25-50), --exp can:
- Overwhelm --stylize settings
- Override personalization (--p)
- Reduce image diversity
Expert tip: Keep --exp at 10-25 for most work. Higher values are for specific stylistic effects, not general quality improvement.
Omni Reference
The --oref parameter transfers subject characteristics from a reference image to your generation. This replaced --cref in V7.
Basic Usage
/imagine A woman in a red dress at a gala --oref [image URL]
What transfers: - Face and facial features - Body type and proportions - Clothing and accessories - Overall identity
Weight Control (–ow)
--ow 0-1000 # Omni weight (default 100)
| Weight | Effect |
|---|---|
| 0-30 | Loose inspiration, allows style changes |
| 30-60 | Moderate influence |
| 60-100 | Strong resemblance (default area) |
| 100-300 | Very close match |
| 300-1000 | Maximum fidelity |
Weight Interactions
The --ow parameter competes with --stylize and --exp for influence. When using high stylize or exp values, increase --ow to maintain reference consistency:
# High stylize needs higher ow to keep reference
--oref [url] --ow 200 --s 400
# High exp overwhelms default ow
--oref [url] --ow 300 --exp 25
# If you aren't using high stylize/exp, stay at moderate ow (100-400)
Expert tip: For most work without extreme --stylize or --exp, keep --ow under 400. Only go above moderate values when you need to preserve exact facial features or clothing details against strong style parameters.
Best Practices
Reference image quality matters: - High resolution, clear subject - Front-facing photos work best for faces - Consistent lighting in reference - Minimal background distractions
Adjusting weight for style changes:
# Photo to anime conversion - lower weight
--oref [photo URL] --ow 40 --niji 7
# Maintaining strict likeness
--oref [photo URL] --ow 200 --v 7
Combining with style reference:
# Subject from one image, style from another
--oref [subject URL] --sref [style URL] --ow 100 --sw 150
Style Reference
The --sref parameter transfers aesthetic qualities from a reference image.
Basic Usage
/imagine A mountain landscape at sunset --sref [style image URL]
What transfers: - Color palette - Lighting style - Artistic technique - Overall mood/atmosphere - Compositional tendencies
Weight Control (–sw)
--sw 0-1000 # Style weight (default 100)
| Weight | Effect |
|---|---|
| 0-50 | Subtle influence |
| 50-150 | Balanced transfer |
| 150-300 | Strong style match |
| 300-1000 | Dominant style |
Multiple Style References
You can combine multiple style images:
--sref [url1] [url2]
The styles blend together. Use for creating unique aesthetic combinations.
Best Practices
Works best with: - Distinctive, consistent styles - Clear aesthetic characteristics - Images with strong visual identity
Less effective for: - Very generic photos - Mixed or unclear styles - Images where the “style” isn’t obvious
Expert tip: Niji 7 has the best --sref performance. If style transfer is critical, consider using Niji 7 even for non-anime content.
Using Old Style Reference Codes
If you have --sref codes from the V6 era, they won’t work directly in V7. Add --sv 4 to use legacy style codes:
/imagine A mountain landscape --sref 123456789 --sv 4
# --sv 4 tells V7 to interpret the code using the V6 style system
/imagine A mountain landscape --sref 123456789 --sv 6
# --sv 6 tells V7 to interpret the code using the V6.1 style system
V8 Alpha SREF update (March 2026): A new SREF/Moodboards version (--sv 7) became the default during the V8 Alpha period — 4x faster and 4x cheaper than the previous version, supporting --hd, --p, --stylize, and --exp, with Moodboards defaulting to --sv 7 on the same terms.20 V8.0 Alpha itself was retired on July 24, 2026, but --sv 7 is the style-version baseline the V8 family inherited.39
Note: While --sv 4 and --sv 6 maintain backward compatibility, consider re-generating style references in V7 or V8 for better results with the new models.
Image Weight
The --iw parameter controls how much influence a reference image has on your generation.
Basic Usage
/imagine [prompt] [image URL] --iw 1.5
Weight Range
Range: 0-2 (default 1)
| Weight | Effect |
|---|---|
| 0-0.5 | Prompt dominant |
| 0.5-1 | Balanced |
| 1-1.5 | Image dominant |
| 1.5-2 | Strong image influence |
Use Cases
Low weight (0-0.5): Use the image as loose inspiration while prompt dominates
Balanced (0.5-1): Equal influence from prompt and image
High weight (1.5-2): Create variations closely based on the image
Moodboards (Custom Style Profiles)
Moodboards let you create personalized style profiles by rating images. Instead of using a single --sref image, you build a stable aesthetic preference from multiple examples.6 You can now create multiple named profiles, set a default, and even select multiple active profiles simultaneously.13
How Moodboards Work
- Create a moodboard at midjourney.com/personalize
- Rate images by clicking and scrolling through a grid of images (replaced the old 1v1 comparison system on February 26, 2026) — setup is now up to 5x faster1317
- Apply with
--pto use your default moodboard - Apply with
--p [mID]to use a specific moodboard - Name and organize multiple profiles for different projects or collaborators13
Personalization Across Versions
Personalization is the headline of the V8.2 release, not a side note. Midjourney’s framing is that V8.2 “understands” your aesthetic tastes much better — most visibly on profiles carrying a large number of accumulated points — and that creating a Personalization profile for V8.2 now draws on “a much larger and improved pool of images to choose from.”3839 If you have been rating for months and felt the profile was underused, this is the release where that investment pays.
The version rules are narrower than the marketing, so they’re worth stating plainly:40
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Do my V7 profiles work on V8.2? | Yes — “V7 Personalization profiles are compatible with V8.2.” |
| Does the Global Profile work on V8? | Yes — “Your Global V7 Profile works in V8.1 and V8.2.” |
| Is there a Global V8 Profile? | No. You can create additional V8 profiles, but there is currently no Global V8 Profile. |
| Which version does a new profile target? | Whatever your default version is set to when you click New Profile — set the version first. |
| Do Explore likes and Task-page ratings feed it? | Yes. Liking other members’ images influences your Global Profiles (check which version the liked image used), and ranking image aesthetics from the Tasks page applies to your Global Profile automatically. |
Global Profiles cannot be deleted, so treat the global one as your broad house style and use named profiles for project-specific looks.40
Building a Stable Profile
| Ratings | Stability |
|---|---|
| 40 | Minimum for usable profile13 |
| 200 | Fairly stable, reliable results13 |
| 2,000 | Maximum refinement, best consistency13 |
Expert tip: Rate at least 200 images for a reliable moodboard. Include both likes AND dislikes—dislikes help Midjourney understand what to avoid. You can select multiple active profiles simultaneously for blended aesthetics.13
Using Moodboards
/imagine A forest path at dawn --p
# Uses your default moodboard
/imagine A forest path at dawn --p abc123
# Uses specific moodboard with ID abc123
/imagine A forest path at dawn --profile abc123
# Alternative syntax using --profile parameter
Moodboards vs Style Reference
| Approach | Best For |
|---|---|
--sref |
One-off style from a single image |
--p (Moodboard) |
Consistent personal aesthetic across projects |
Blending Moodboards with –sref
You can combine moodboards with style reference codes in a single prompt for nuanced control:15
/imagine A portrait --p --sref [url] --sw 50
# Your moodboard aesthetic + subtle style reference influence
/imagine A portrait --sref 142710498 --profile drgmjoi 2jrqbw6
# Mix sref codes with multiple moodboard profiles
You can also share moodboard snapshots as codes (e.g., --profile 2jrqbw6) that others can use, or share a link to the live version that updates as you refine it.15
Draft Mode
Draft mode generates images at 10x speed for half the GPU cost. Essential for exploration. Originally a V7 workflow, Draft Mode reached V8.1 on June 16, 2026.36
Draft Mode and V8.2: an unresolved conflict in Midjourney’s docs
Read this before you plan a session around Draft Mode, because the two official documents disagree.
The compatibility chart that was rebuilt alongside the V8.2 launch collapses V8.1 and V8.2 into one “V8.1 & V8.2” column and marks Draft Mode with a no-symbol in it — no Draft Mode on the merged column.39 The Draft & Conversational Modes article was last edited July 9, 2026, two weeks before V8.2 shipped, and still reads: “Draft mode is compatible with Midjourney versions 7 and 8.1.”41 It has not been revised since V8.2 became the default. The V8.2 announcement itself says nothing about Draft Mode at all.38
Neither document says V8.1 lost Draft Mode, and there is no announcement removing it. The most defensible reading is that the chart’s no-symbol is a statement about the new model rather than a retraction: Draft Mode did not carry over to V8.2, and because the chart now merges the two versions into a single column, the unsupported mark lands on V8.1 as collateral. The Draft article’s V7-and-8.1 sentence is simply older than the release.
What to do about it:
- If you want Draft Mode — including the
--sref random24-image style sampler — put--v 8.1in the prompt explicitly. Do not rely on the default, which is now V8.2.39 - Verify before you budget on it. Run the same prompt twice, once on the default and once with
--v 8.1, and see which one returns the 24-image draft grid. That takes one minute and settles the question for your account better than either document currently does. - Do not assume the reverse — that switching to V8.2 silently upgrades your draft workflow. If drafts stop returning 24 images after the July 24 default change, the version switch is the first thing to check.
- Conversational Mode is unaffected: the same rebuilt chart keeps it checked on the merged V8.1 & V8.2 column.39
This guide will collapse the ambiguity as soon as Midjourney updates either document.
Enabling Draft Mode
/imagine [prompt] --draft
Or toggle in web interface settings.
Draft Mode on V8.1 (June 2026)
On V8.1, Draft Mode behaves differently from the classic V7 path:36
- 24 images per generation at lower resolution and quality (instead of the usual small grid), so you explore far wider per job.
- Click
Varyon any draft to render that image at full quality and full resolution. - Half the fast-hours of a V8.1 SD job — even though each draft returns 24 images.
- Toggle with the ⚡ button in the menubar (or
--draftin the prompt). - Random styles (June 25, 2026): add
--sref randomto a draft-mode prompt and each of the 24 images renders with a different random style — a style-discovery sampler in one job.37
Pair this with V8.1’s speed for very fast, very cheap exploration, then Vary only the keepers up to full resolution. For style hunting, run one --sref random draft, pick the looks you like, then lift those images’ sref codes for controlled follow-ups. Since V8.2 became the default on July 24, 2026, select V8.1 explicitly (--v 8.1) for this workflow — see the conflict note above.3941
Draft vs Full Comparison
| Aspect | Draft | Full |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | ~10x faster | Standard |
| GPU cost | 50% | 100% |
| Detail | Reduced | Full |
| Best for | Exploration | Final output |
The Draft Workflow
1. Draft Mode Exploration (--draft)
├── Test 5-10 variations quickly
├── Identify promising directions
└── Note effective parameters
2. Full Render Refinement
├── Remove --draft flag
├── Apply learned parameters
└── Fine-tune with --seed
Expert tip: Always start in Draft mode. The cost savings add up, and you’ll explore more options. Only switch to full render when you’ve found a direction worth committing to.
Conversational Mode
Conversational Mode lets you describe what you want in plain natural language—by text or by voice—and Midjourney’s AI writes the actual prompts for you. Instead of hand-crafting a parameter string, you have a back-and-forth: describe an idea, look at the grid, then refine by referencing prior outputs as “image 1,” “image 2,” and so on.34
Per the official Version compatibility chart, Conversational Mode is supported on V7 and V8.1 (it is not listed for V6).34
Text vs. Voice
| Mode | Requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Text Conversational Mode | Works with or without Draft Mode | Type your intent in natural language; multi-language input is supported |
| Voice Conversational Mode | Requires Draft Mode | Speak your intent; the AI transcribes and prompts on your behalf |
How It Works
You: "A cozy reading nook by a rain-streaked window, warm lamplight"
MJ: [generates a grid: image 1, image 2, image 3, image 4]
You: "Make image 2 wider and add a sleeping cat on the chair"
MJ: [regenerates from image 2 with the new direction]
Tips:
- Reference outputs explicitly by number (“image 1,” “image 3”) so the AI knows what to build on.
- Use Text Conversational Mode for precise, repeatable sessions; reach for voice (with Draft Mode on) when you want to brainstorm hands-free.
- Conversational Mode pairs naturally with Draft Mode’s fast, low-cost grids for rapid exploration before committing to a full render.
- Note: Omni Reference (--oref) is not compatible with Conversational Mode—switch back to a standard V7 prompt when you need --oref.28
Image-to-Video Basics
Midjourney’s V1 Video Model launched June 19, 2025, enabling image-to-video animation.
How It Works
- Select any image (Midjourney-generated or uploaded)
- Click “Animate” button
- Choose options (Auto, Manual, Loop)
- Generate 5-second video clip
Motion Parameters
--motion low # Still scenes, slow motion, subtle movement (default)
--motion high # Big camera motions, larger character movements
--raw # Reduces creative flair, more prompt control
Motion Comparison
| Setting | Effect | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Low | Subtle, cinematic movement | Portraits, still life, atmosphere |
| High | Dynamic, energetic motion | Action, landscapes, crowds |
Warning: High motion can produce unrealistic or glitchy movements. Start with low, increase only if needed.
Cost and Plans
- Default batch size is 4 videos per prompt; reduce to 1 or 2 with
--bs #to conserve GPU time - Standard, Pro, and Mega can generate HD video (Fast Mode only)
- Only Pro and Mega get Relax Mode for video (SD only)
| Plan | Fast Video | Relax Video | HD Video |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | Yes | No | No |
| Standard | Yes | No | Yes (Fast only) |
| Pro | Yes | Yes (SD only) | Yes (Fast only) |
| Mega | Yes | Yes (SD only) | Yes (Fast only) |
HD Video Mode
HD Video mode generates 720p video instead of SD’s 480p output. Standard, Pro, and Mega plans can generate HD videos in Fast Mode; Relax video is SD-only and limited to Pro and Mega.32
How to use HD Video: 1. Open the video options under More Options in the Imagine bar. 2. Set Video Resolution to HD before generating. 3. Keep the job in Fast Mode; HD video is not a Relax Mode path.
HD Video costs: - Batch 4 HD video costs about 26 GPU minutes versus 8 GPU minutes for SD. - Standard, Pro, and Mega plans can generate HD video in Fast Mode. - Pro and Mega plans can generate Relax video, but only in SD resolution.
| Mode | Resolution | Batch 1 | Batch 2 | Batch 4 (default) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard (SD) | Base | 2 min | 4 min | 8 min |
| High Definition (HD) | 4x pixels | 7 min | 13 min | 26 min |
When to use HD: - Final delivery assets - Large displays or projections - Professional/commercial work - When detail matters in motion
Expert tip: Always test in SD first. HD takes longer and costs more—only upgrade your best clips.
Extending and Looping
Extending Videos
You can extend any video by an additional 4 seconds, up to 4 times (21 seconds max).
Extension options: - Auto: Automatically continues the video - Manual: Adjust prompt before extending
Best practices for extensions: - Plan your narrative arc before starting - First 5 seconds should establish the scene - Each extension should have purpose - Consider pacing—21 seconds is longer than you think
Creating Loops
The Loop option creates seamless looping videos where the first and last frames match.
Select image → Click "Loop" → Generate
Best for: - Background animations - Social media content - Ambient visuals - Cinemagraphs
Tips for better loops: - Simple, repeatable motion works best - Avoid complex camera movements - Atmospheric elements (clouds, water, fire) loop naturally
Video Best Practices
When to Use Video
Good candidates for video: - Atmospheric scenes (fog, rain, fire) - Subtle movement (hair, fabric, water) - Landscapes with environmental motion - Portraits with minimal movement
Less ideal for video: - Complex action sequences - Multi-character scenes - Precise choreography - Technical accuracy requirements
Optimizing for Video
Before animating: 1. Generate the perfect still image first 2. Consider how elements might move 3. Avoid complex, interconnected subjects 4. Simple compositions animate better
Prompt adjustments:
# Good for video
Lone figure standing on cliff edge, wind blowing cape, dramatic clouds
# Less ideal for video
Group of dancers in synchronized formation, precise movements
Cost Management
At 8x image cost, video adds up fast:
Cost-effective workflow: 1. Explore in Draft mode (images) 2. Find perfect composition 3. Generate final high-quality still 4. Animate only the best version 5. Extend only if necessary
Cinematic Realism
The most effective pattern for photorealistic, cinematic results.

mineral textures catching diffused light, abstract geological patterns
--ar 1:1 --s 500 --weird 300 --v 7
Pushing Boundaries
For truly experimental work:
- Push --weird above 1000
- Combine with --chaos 75+
- Use abstract emotional language
- Reference unconventional artists
The architecture of forgotten dreams, impossible geometries folding
through chromatic space, Escher meets Kandinsky, synesthetic color
relationships, visual music
--ar 1:1 --s 1000 --weird 2000 --chaos 75 --v 7
Word Weighting
Use :: syntax to control emphasis on specific elements.
Syntax
word::2 # Double emphasis
word::1.5 # 50% more emphasis
word::1 # Normal (default)
word::0.5 # Half emphasis
word::-1 # Negative (avoid)
Examples
ethereal::2 portrait of a warrior, dramatic lighting::1.5, mist::0.5
This prompt: - Strongly emphasizes ethereal quality - Moderately emphasizes dramatic lighting - Reduces mist presence
When to Use Weighting
Useful for: - Fine-tuning element balance - Suppressing unwanted interpretations - Emphasizing key features
Avoid when: - First draft exploration - Simple prompts that work without it - You’re not sure what to emphasize
Expert tip: Word weighting is a refinement tool, not a first step. Get the basic prompt working, then use weighting to fine-tune.
Negative Prompts
The --no parameter excludes elements from generation.
Basic Usage
/imagine Beautiful landscape --no people, text, watermark
Effective Negatives
| Goal | Negative |
|---|---|
| Photorealism | --no anime, cartoon, illustration, painting, drawing |
| Clean image | --no text, watermark, signature, frame, border |
| Natural look | --no oversaturated, HDR, artificial |
| Serious tone | --no cute, chibi, kawaii |
| Simple composition | --no busy, cluttered, crowded |
Best Practices
Do: - Use specific, clear terms - Address actual problems in your outputs - Keep the list focused (3-5 items)
Don’t: - Create exhaustive lists of everything you don’t want - Use vague terms (“bad”, “ugly”) - Negate things unlikely to appear anyway
The Cinematic Negative
For consistent photorealistic results:
--no anime, cartoon, illustration, painting, drawing, sketch, CGI, 3D render
Seed Control
Seeds enable reproducibility and controlled variation.
Basic Usage
/imagine [prompt] --seed 12345
Same prompt + same seed = very similar output.
Finding Seeds
After generation, click the image info to find the seed used. Note it for reproduction.
Seed Workflows
Variation workflow: 1. Generate with random seed 2. Find a result you like 3. Note the seed 4. Make small prompt changes with same seed 5. Compare variations
Batch consistency:
Scene in morning light --seed 54321
Scene in afternoon light --seed 54321
Scene in evening light --seed 54321
Using the same seed across related prompts creates more consistent compositions.
Multi-Subject Composition
Complex scenes with multiple subjects require careful prompt construction.
Hierarchy Approach
List subjects in order of importance:
[Primary subject], [secondary subject], [tertiary subject],
[their relationship/interaction], [setting], [style]
Spatial Language
Use clear spatial descriptors:
In the foreground, [subject A]
In the middle ground, [subject B]
In the background, [subject C]
Or:
On the left, [subject A]
In the center, [subject B]
On the right, [subject C]
Example
Elderly grandmother and young granddaughter baking together in
sunlit kitchen, grandmother guiding child's hands rolling dough,
flour dusting the wooden counter, warm afternoon light from window,
vintage kitchen appliances in background, intimate family moment,
documentary photography style
--ar 3:2 --s 100 --v 7
Text Rendering
V7 dramatically improved text rendering in images.
Best Practices
Keep text short: - Single words work best - Short phrases (2-4 words) usually work - Long sentences often fail
Use quotation marks:
Neon sign reading "OPEN" in storefront window
Specify typography:
Vintage poster with "JAZZ NIGHT" in art deco typography
Text Examples
Signage:
Rainy city street at night, neon diner sign reading "EAT" glowing
red through rain-streaked window, film noir atmosphere
--ar 16:9 --s 150 --v 7
Typography:
Minimalist book cover design, large serif typography reading "THE END"
centered on cream paper texture, literary fiction aesthetic
--ar 2:3 --s 100 --v 7
Limitations
Text rendering still struggles with: - Long sentences - Complex fonts - Small text in busy images - Multiple text elements
Expert tip: If text is critical, generate the image without text and add typography in post-processing.
The Iteration Loop
Professional workflow for Midjourney:
Phase 1: Explore (Draft Mode)
1. Enable Draft mode (--draft)
2. Write basic prompt with core concept
3. Generate 4-8 batches quickly
4. Identify promising directions
5. Note what works/doesn't
Goal: Find direction, not perfection. Speed matters.
Phase 2: Refine
1. Disable Draft mode
2. Take best concepts from Phase 1
3. Add specific details
4. Adjust parameters (--s, --chaos, etc.)
5. Generate in Fast mode
6. Compare variations
Goal: Narrow down to 2-3 strong options.
Phase 3: Perfect
1. Select best candidate
2. Note the seed
3. Make micro-adjustments to prompt
4. Use same seed for consistency
5. Upscale final choice
Goal: Polish the winner.
Time Allocation
| Phase | Time | Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Explore | 60% | Draft |
| Refine | 30% | Fast |
| Perfect | 10% | Fast |
Most users invert this, spending too long perfecting first attempts. Explore more, perfect less.
Describe on Web
Right-click any image on the web interface and select “Describe” to generate four text prompts from the image.15 This is invaluable for reverse-engineering styles you admire—describe an image from the Explore page, then modify the resulting prompts to match your vision. Prompts auto-clear on page refresh.
Cost Management
Understanding GPU Time
- Fast Mode: Uses GPU hours from your subscription
- Relax Mode: Unlimited but queued (Standard+ plans)
- Draft Mode: Half the GPU cost of regular
- Video: ~8x the cost of images
Subscription Value
| Plan | Fast Hours | Relax | Video Relax | $/GPU Hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | 3.3 hrs | No | No | $3.03 |
| Standard | 15 hrs | Yes | No | $2.00 |
| Pro | 30 hrs | Yes | Yes | $2.00 |
| Mega | 60 hrs | Yes | Yes | $2.00 |
Insight: Standard+ plans have much better value per GPU hour, plus unlimited Relax.
Cost-Saving Strategies
- Explore in Draft mode - Half cost, 10x faster
- Use Relax for exploration - Free (Standard+)
- Save Fast for finals - Only when quality matters
- Batch similar prompts - More efficient than one-offs
- Plan before generating - Think, then generate
Estimating Usage
| Action | Approx. GPU Minutes |
|---|---|
| 4 images (standard) | ~1 min |
| 4 images (draft) | ~0.5 min |
| Upscale | ~0.5 min |
| Video (4x 5sec) | ~8 min |
Troubleshooting
Common Issues
| Issue | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Blurry faces | Low –s or style conflict | Use --style raw, increase detail prompts |
| Wrong aspect | Default 1:1 | Specify --ar explicitly |
| Too artistic | High –s | Lower to 50-100 |
| Too literal | Low –s | Increase to 200+ |
| Inconsistent outputs | Low chaos | Use --seed for consistency |
| Style overpowering | High –sw | Reduce --sw weight |
| Text not rendering | V7 limitation | Keep text short, use quotes |
| Hands look wrong | AI limitation | Crop or regenerate |
| Rooms not found | Feature removed Feb 26, 202614 | Use folders and the Organize page instead |
Parameter Conflicts
Avoid combining:
- --style raw + high --s (contradictory)
- --v 7 + --niji (pick one)
- Multiple strong references at 100% weight
- --exp 50+ + --stylize (exp overwhelms)
- --exp 50+ + --p (exp overrides)
Works well:
- --oref + --sref at moderate weights
- --chaos + --seed (varied but reproducible)
- --style raw + low --s (maximum photorealism)
- --exp 10-25 + --s 100-200 (enhanced, controlled)
When Nothing Works
- Simplify - Remove parameters, shorten prompt
- Split - Try subject and style separately
- Seed hunt - Generate many, find good seed, iterate
- Reference - Use
--srefwith image showing your goal - Version - Try different model version
Version Migration
V6 to V7 Migration
Old V6 style:
portrait, beautiful woman, dramatic lighting, 8k, detailed, masterpiece
New V7 style:
A contemplative portrait of a woman in her 30s, Rembrandt lighting
casting gentle shadows across her face, medium format photography
aesthetic with shallow depth of field
Key Changes
| Aspect | V6 | V7 |
|---|---|---|
| Prompt style | Keywords | Natural language |
| Quality words | Helpful | Mostly ignored |
| Character ref | --cref |
--oref |
| Personalization | Optional | Default |
| Default behavior | Stylized | More literal |
What to Stop Doing
- Keyword spam (“beautiful, stunning, amazing”)
- Quality modifiers (“8k, ultra detailed, masterpiece”)
- Using
--cref(it’s--orefnow) - Short, comma-separated prompts
What to Start Doing
- Write full sentences
- Describe what you see, not what you want
- Be specific about lighting, materials, mood
- Use camera/lens terminology
- Leverage personalization (
--p)
Is --style raw deprecated? The V7-to-V8 rename
Short answer: the capability survived, the spelling changed. V7 uses --style raw; the V8 family uses --raw. Since the V8 family took over as default — V8.1 on June 10, 2026, then V8.2 on July 24, 2026 — prompts carried over with the old V7 form are the most common migration stumble.
| You’re targeting | Correct form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| V8.2 / V8.1 (current default family) | --raw |
A product photo of a ceramic mug --raw |
V7 (explicit --v 7) |
--style raw |
A product photo of a ceramic mug --v 7 --style raw |
Both forms do the same job: turn down Midjourney’s default aesthetic interpretation so the output tracks your prompt more literally.1931 --style raw is not gone — it is the V7 syntax, and it stays correct whenever you explicitly select V7. On the V8 family, write --raw.

Changelog
| Date | Change | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-07-25 | V8.2 shipped as the default model on July 24, 2026, replacing V8.1. Midjourney frames it as “an update focused on aesthetics, image quality, and Personalization,” producing images that are “more creative, bold, sophisticated, and edgy” with low-quality generations “dramatically reduced.” Personalization is the headline feature: V7 profiles are compatible with V8.2, the Global V7 Profile works in both V8.1 and V8.2, there is still no Global V8 Profile, and creating a V8.2 profile now draws on “a much larger and improved pool of images.” Added a V8.2 section to Version Selection and a Personalization Across Versions table to Moodboards. V8.1 demoted to selectable with its official reign recorded as June 10 to July 23, 2026. V8.0 Alpha retired July 24, 2026 — the guide asserted continued limited-time availability in four places (intro callout, V8 timeline, --v 8 cheat-sheet entry, footnote 2); all four corrected to “no longer available for use,” gallery images excepted. Draft Mode docs conflict documented: the rebuilt compatibility chart marks Draft Mode unsupported on the merged “V8.1 & V8.2” column, while the Draft & Conversational Modes article (last edited July 9, 2026, pre-V8.2) still says “Draft mode is compatible with Midjourney versions 7 and 8.1.” The guide presents both, reads the merged-column no-symbol as applying to the new model rather than as a retraction of V8.1 support, and tells readers to select --v 8.1 explicitly for Draft Mode and the --sref random sampler and to verify with a two-prompt test. Held items folded in: GPU costs corrected to the docs’ exact figures — HD 1.3 minutes, SD 0.8 minutes, replacing the guide’s 1.33 and “less than 1 GPU minute”; the V8.1 default-switch date corrected from June 11 to June 10, 2026 throughout (intro callout, Version Selection, V7 section, --style raw migration, footnotes 2 and 35), corroborated by the V7 entry closing its reign June 9, 2026; and the HD inpaint/outpaint caveat added — “Using any of our inpainting or outpainting tools (Pan, Zoom Out, Edit/Vary Region) on HD images will downscale the resulting images to SD. You can use the Upscale options to return these images to HD resolution.” Compatibility chart restructured by Midjourney: V8.1 and V8.2 collapsed into one column; Omni Reference and Omni Reference Weight annotated “(Uses V7)” rather than unsupported; the Upscalers row split into “SD Images ✓ / HD Images (2048px) ✓ (1.3 min GPU cost)”; Seed annotated “(99% identical)”; max aspect ratio listed as “14:1 (4:1 for HD)”. Character Reference/Weight, Multi-Prompting, Quality, Niji, and Turbo remain unsupported on the V8 family. Also corrected: the web button is named “Run batch as HD” (the 2026-05-28 entry below recorded it as “Rerun as HD”); per the Version docs it reruns the seedlocked prompt in HD on SD V8.1 images. No change asserted to --preview, which Midjourney has neither retired nor redefined. |
38 39 40 41 |
| 2026-07-16 | Added “Is --style raw deprecated?” migration subsection. Search-demand-led: the V7-to-V8 rename (--style raw on V7, --raw on V8/V8.1) now has a direct answer with a targeting table in Version Migration. No product changes; existing parameter documentation unchanged. |
19 31 |
| 2026-07-01 | Random styles in Draft Mode (June 25, 2026). Add --sref random to a V8.1 draft-mode prompt and each of the 24 draft images renders with a different random style — one job becomes a style-discovery sampler; Vary the keepers and reuse their sref codes for controlled follow-ups (see Draft Mode). Also this update: title/description aligned to the evergreen CTR-audit form. |
37 |
| 2026-06-16 | Draft Mode came to V8.1 + new --preview parameter. Midjourney enabled Draft Mode on V8.1: each draft generation returns 24 images at lower resolution, click Vary to render any at full quality/resolution, at half the fast-hours of a V8.1 SD job, toggled via the ⚡ button. Corrected the guide’s prior “Draft Mode unsupported on V8.1” claim in the intro callout, V8.1 compatibility notes, V7 feature list, and the Version Comparison matrix. Documented the new --preview parameter (test the latest in-progress model; outputs may be unpolished and jobs are not guaranteed to run consistently over time, especially with personalization/moodboards) in the Parameter Cheat Sheet. |
36 |
| 2026-06-11 | V8.1 promoted to default model. Midjourney made V8.1 the default version in the official Version docs, replacing V7 as the default. V7 remains fully selectable for full feature coverage (Omni Reference, Draft Mode, Quality values, multi-prompts). Updated the intro callout, Version Selection (V8.1 and V7 sections), and frontmatter to reflect V8.1 as the current default. (Correction 2026-07-25: the switch itself happened on June 10, 2026 per the Version docs; this row’s date is when the guide caught up, not when Midjourney shipped.) | 35 39 |
| 2026-06-09 | Corrected --no (No parameter) V8.1 support + documented Conversational Mode. The official Version compatibility chart shows the No parameter (--no) as supported on V6, V7, and V8.1—the guide previously listed it as unsupported on V8.1 (intro callout, V8.1 compatibility notes, and feature matrix all fixed). Multi-Prompting remains unsupported on V8.1 (unchanged). Added a Conversational Mode section: describe ideas in natural language by text or voice (multi-language) and the AI writes the prompts, referencing outputs as “image 1,” “image 2,” etc.; supported on V7 and V8.1; text works with or without Draft Mode while voice requires Draft Mode. Added a Conversational Mode row to the V8.1 feature matrix. |
34 |
| 2026-05-28 | Web Updates (May 27, 2026) — Midjourney shipped a web/mobile update with these changes: voice (conversational) sessions now access Image Prompts, Style References, sidebar settings, and recent work; Image Prompts function from both the tray and the sidebar; tray images persist across voice submissions until explicitly removed; references can be added without interrupting voice mode; new “Rerun as HD” button lets you upscale V8.1 Standard Definition images to High Definition directly; folder views display hidden item counts (filtered-content volume); the filter reset button moved to the top of the filter bar; the mobile web settings menu consolidates Profiles, Moodboards, and Liked Styles; mobile lightbox gained a More Options panel; plus ~12 bug fixes covering search for non-subscribed members, corrected upload limits, disabling unavailable buttons, improved clipboard operations, and subscription-panel accuracy. The May 6 Office Hours roadmap notes (V8.2 close, new editing model in progress, V9 and video on the table) remain unchanged. | 33 |
| 2026-05-06 | V8.1 released to midjourney.com and Discord on April 30, 2026, while V7 remains the current default model in the official Version docs. Corrected the guide’s V8.1 compatibility: HD is available at 1.33 GPU minutes, SD costs less than 1 GPU minute (corrected 2026-07-25 to the docs’ exact figures: HD 1.3, SD 0.8), --hd / --sd are the relevant V8.1 resolution controls, and the official compatibility chart marks Omni Reference, Character Reference, multi-prompts, No, Quality, Niji, Draft Mode, and Turbo as unsupported on V8.1. V8.2 development is underway with rating data collected at midjourney.com/rank-v8-1. April 27, 2026 high-res rating party — Midjourney requested community help ranking ‘raw’ images at full 2K resolution to tune V8.1/V8.2 to be natively HD-beautiful. |
2 26 27 |
| 2026-04-25 | V8.1 Alpha launched April 14, 2026 at alpha.midjourney.com. HD is now default (native 2K without an upscaler step on default jobs; Standard Resolution and “Run as HD” still exist). HD mode is 3× faster and 3× cheaper than V8.0 Alpha; standard resolution is 50% faster and 25% cheaper. Aesthetic restored: V8.1 returns to a “consistent and familiar aesthetic in the spirit of V7” — the over-processed/hyper-polished default of V8.0 is gone. Image prompts return with weights. Prompt Shortener auto-engages when you exceed prompt-length limits. Describe updated to return longer, more detailed outputs. Moodboards and srefs are super-stable in V8.1 (was a major V8.0 weak point). Midjourney says they will likely decommission V8.0 Alpha “after V8.1 has been out for a few weeks.” Still alpha-only — not on the main site or Discord. Upcoming roadmap (per the V8.1 announcement): V8 upscalers next, then V8 edit/inpainting/outpainting model upgrades. |
25 |
| 2026-04-04 | Pre-launch tracking (now superseded by April 14 V8.1 ship): community reporting at the time pointed to week of April 6-8; official March 21 guidance was 1-3 weeks. The remaining-blocker / 4-10× cost distillation note from this period was resolved by the actual launch. | 2124 |
| 2026-04-01 | Added V8.1 training run details (announced March 21, targeting improved aesthetics/coherence/image prompts, 1-3 weeks). Added V8 Alpha known issues (over-processed aesthetic, reduced stylization range, limited abstraction, age drift, Minecraft effect, alpha instability). V8.1 Alpha Launch. Midjourney official, April 14, 2026. V8.1 Alpha launched at
alpha.midjourney.com. HD mode is now default on default jobs (native 2K, no upscaler step) and is 3× faster and 3× cheaper than V8.0 Alpha; Standard Resolution and “Run as HD” remain available. Standard resolution is 50% faster and 25% cheaper. Aesthetic returns to “consistent and familiar aesthetic in the spirit of V7” — over-processed V8.0 default is gone. Image prompts return with weights. New Prompt Shortener automatically activates when prompts exceed length limits. Describe updated for longer, more detailed outputs. Moodboards and srefs are super-stable. Per the announcement: “It is likely that we will decommission our V8.0 model after V8.1 has been out for a few weeks.” Still alpha-only — not on the main site or Discord; V8.1 Alpha creations do not appear on the main website. Upcoming roadmap (per the V8.1 announcement): V8 upscalers, then V8 edit / inpainting / outpainting model upgrades. (V9 is referenced in earlier Midjourney communications but is not in the V8.1 announcement.) Community feedback channel: Discord#ideas-and-features. ↩↩↩ -
V8.1 Updates. Midjourney official, April 30, 2026. “V8.1 is now available on Discord as well as midjourney.com.” Sharpness and image-quality improvements (most noticeable for SREFs and Moodboards, but visible across all images, especially HD). Standard Definition temporarily set as default during server transition to conserve compute; users can switch to HD via Settings or by adding
--hdto prompts. V8.2 in development; rating data collected atmidjourney.com/rank-v8-1. ↩↩ -
High-res Rating. Midjourney official, April 27, 2026. Midjourney announced major aesthetic updates for V8.1/V8.2 and requested community help ranking images at full 2K resolution. Per the announcement, this was the first time they ran rating parties at full 2K resolution; the goal was to rank ‘raw’ 2K images so V8.1 and V8.2 could be tuned to be more ‘natively’ HD-beautiful. ↩

Omni Reference. Midjourney official docs. Omni Reference is compatible with Midjourney version 7, uses
--oref, and costs 2x regular V7 GPU time. It is not compatible with Fast Mode, Draft Mode, Conversational Mode, or--q 4. ↩↩↩ -
Character Reference. Midjourney official docs. Character Reference uses
--cref, but Midjourney says to use Omni Reference instead when using V7; Character Reference is compatible with Midjourney and Niji version 6. ↩ -
Quality. Midjourney official docs. In version 7,
--qdefaults to 1 and accepts 2 or 4;--q 4is not compatible with Omni Reference. ↩ -

Web Updates (May 27, 2026). Midjourney official. The web/mobile update adds voice (conversational) mode access to Image Prompts, Style References, sidebar settings, and recent work; image prompts function from both the tray and the sidebar; tray images persist across voice submissions; references can be added without interrupting voice mode. Adds a “Rerun as HD” button to upscale V8.1 SD images to HD. Folder views display hidden item counts. Filter reset button moved to the top of the filter bar. Mobile web settings menu consolidates Profiles, Moodboards, and Liked Styles. Mobile lightbox gains a More Options panel. Plus approximately a dozen bug fixes including search for non-subscribed members, corrected upload limits, disabling unavailable buttons, improved clipboard operations, and subscription-panel accuracy. ↩

Draft & Conversational Modes and Version. Midjourney official docs, confirmed via live docs read 2026-06-09. The Version compatibility chart lists the No parameter (
--no) as supported on V6, V7, and V8.1, and lists Conversational Mode as supported on V7 and V8.1 (not V6). Conversational Mode lets you describe ideas in natural language (text or voice, multi-language) and the AI writes the prompts; outputs are referenced as “image 1,” “image 2,” etc. Text Conversational Mode works with or without Draft Mode; voice requires Draft Mode. ↩↩↩↩ -
Midjourney Updates. Midjourney official, observed June 11, 2026. V8.1 promoted to the default Midjourney model in the official Version docs, replacing V7 as the default; V7 remains fully selectable for full feature coverage. Date correction (2026-07-25): the Version docs place the switch on June 10, 2026 — “was the default version from June 10 to July 23, 2026” — corroborated by the V7 entry ending its reign June 9, 2026. June 11 was this guide’s observation date, not Midjourney’s ship date. See 39. ↩↩↩

Draft Mode for V8.1 and new feature previews. Midjourney official updates, June 16, 2026. “Draft mode is now available for V8.1.” Each draft generation creates 24 images at a lower resolution and quality; click “Vary” on images to render at full quality and full resolution; draft jobs use half as many fast hours as V8.1 SD jobs (even though they generate 24 images); turn on draft mode via the ⚡ button in the menubar. New
--previewparameter tests the latest in-progress model — images may be unpolished and jobs are not guaranteed to run consistently over time, with differences especially on personalization and moodboards. ↩↩↩↩↩↩ -
Random styles in draft mode — Midjourney official updates, June 25, 2026. “Include
--sref randomin your draft-mode prompt to create 24 images with different styles”; activate draft mode via the ⚡ icon in the prompt bar or--draft. Applies to V8.1. Current-session verification July 1, 2026 (PST) against updates.midjourney.com. ↩↩↩ -
Version 8.2. Midjourney official updates, July 24, 2026. V8.2 released as the default model. The update centers on “aesthetics and image quality and personalization.” Images “should be more creative, bold, sophisticated, edgy and fresh,” and “random situations where you’d get a low quality image should be dramatically reduced.” Personalization better understands user preferences, especially for users with extensive rating histories, and V8.2 personalization profiles draw on “a much larger and improved pool of images to choose from.” The post credits community ratings for the improvement and encourages testing both new and existing personalization profiles against the new model. It contains no statement about Draft Mode,
--preview, or V8.0/V8.1 deprecation. Verified 2026-07-25. ↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩ -
Midjourney Version Documentation — revision dated 2026-07-24T22:27:59Z, verified 2026-07-25 (Zendesk API mirror:
/api/v2/help_center/en-us/articles/32199405667853.json). “The current default Midjourney version is V8.2.” V8.2: “released as the default version on July 24, 2026. V8.2 is an update focused on aesthetics, image quality, and Personalization. V8.2 images are more creative, bold, sophisticated, and edgy.” V8.1: “released on April 14, 2026, and was the default version from June 10 to July 23, 2026.” V8.0: “was an early access alpha version that launched on March 17, 2026 and was available on the Midjourney Alpha website until July 24, 2026. Images generated in V8.0 are still available in your website gallery, but the version is no longer available for use.” V7: “was the default version from June 17, 2025 to June 9, 2026.” HD/SD cost: “HD costs 1.3 minutes of GPU time, compared to SD which costs 0.8 minutes of GPU time.” Edit caveat: “Using any of our inpainting or outpainting tools (Pan, Zoom Out, Edit/Vary Region) on HD images will downscale the resulting images to SD. You can use the Upscale options to return these images to HD resolution.” Web button: “Using the web ‘Run batch as HD’ button on SD V8.1 images will rerun the seedlocked prompt in HD.” The Feature Compatibility & Comparison Chart now uses three columns — V6, V7, and a merged V8.1 & V8.2 — with, on the merged column: Max. Aspect Ratio “14:1 (4:1 for HD)”; Upscalers split into “SD Images ✓” and “HD Images (2048px) ✓ (1.3 min GPU cost)”; Omni Reference and Omni Reference Weight marked with a no-symbol plus “(Uses V7)”; Seed marked ✓ “(99% identical)”; Variations, Pan (Using V6.1), Zoom Out (Using V6.1), Remix, Personalization, Moodboards, Editor (Using V6.1), Style Reference, Style Reference Codes, Style Weight, Image Prompts, Image Weight, No Parameter, Chaos, Raw, Stylize, Tile, Weird,--exp, Conversational Mode, Relax Mode, and Fast Mode all ✓; and Character Reference, Character Weight, Multi-Prompting, Quality Parameter, Niji Version, Draft Mode, and Turbo Mode all marked with a no-symbol. ↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩ -
Personalization. Midjourney official docs, last edited 2026-07-25T00:08:26Z, verified 2026-07-25. “V7 Personalization profiles are compatible with V8.2.” “You can now create additional profiles for V8, however there is currently no Global V8 Profile. Your Global V7 Profile works in V8.1 and V8.2.” Unlocking the Global Profile is a prerequisite for using Personalization at all — “If you try to use
--pwithout unlocking, you’ll see an error message.” “New Personalization profiles will be based on your default version setting.” “Liking images from other members on the Explore page will influence your Global Profiles. Check which version the liked image was made with to see which Global Profile it will affect.” Ranking Image Aesthetics from the Tasks page applies automatically to the Global Profile. “You cannot delete Global Profiles.” ↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩ -
Draft & Conversational Modes. Midjourney official docs, last edited 2026-07-09T17:42:21Z — two weeks before V8.2 shipped — and unrevised as of verification on 2026-07-25. “Draft mode is compatible with Midjourney versions 7 and 8.1, but it functions differently in each.” “A single Draft mode prompt in V8.1 will generate a big batch of 24 images.” “Draft mode in V8.1 is only available on midjourney.com, it is not currently available in Discord.” “A Draft mode prompt in V7 will generate 4 images at half the GPU cost of standard V7 prompts.” “Conversational mode is compatible with Midjourney version 7 and 8.1.” The article makes no mention of V8.2. This is the document that conflicts with the merged-column no-symbol for Draft Mode in 39; neither document states that V8.1 lost Draft Mode. ↩↩↩↩↩↩↩↩
