If I Could Start My Data Journey Over, I’d Do It Completely Differently
My honest reflections on where I wasted time and what I’d focus on instead.
Motivation
The more I learn about data, the more I realize how different the journey looks from what I initially imagined.
When I first started, I thought learning data was mostly about figuring out what to learn next. A new tool, a new course, a new certificate, another project to add to the portfolio. There was always something else I could learn, and somehow, there was always a feeling that I was still not quite ready.
Having worked as both an analytics engineer and a data analyst, I started looking back at the way I learned and questioning those early assumptions. Experiencing both roles made me realize that many things I spent months obsessing over mattered far less than I thought. Meanwhile, the lessons that actually mattered only surfaced when dealing with messy tables, ambiguous problems, and logic that simply broke unexpectedly.
This isn’t an article about the perfect roadmap to a career in data. There probably isn’t one. It’s a reflection on the things I wish I had understood earlier, and how I would learn if I had to start my data journey over again.
