The café was crowded that evening, but to me, the world had fallen completely silent.
An open mathematics book lay on the table in front of me, its pages blurred by the tears I could no longer hold back. I had cleared JEE Main, but JEE Advanced felt like a mountain I simply couldn't climb. No matter how hard I tried, mathematics refused to become my friend.
I was quietly crying when the gentleman at the next table stood up. He searched his pockets, checked his bag, then smiled awkwardly.
"I seem to have forgotten my wallet at home."
Without thinking twice, I paid his bill.
He looked at me for a moment, then glanced at the mathematics book lying open before me.
"Having a difficult time with math?" he asked gently.
I lowered my head without saying a word.
A warm smile crossed his face.
"You helped me today. Let me return the favor by teaching you mathematics."
The next day, he came back.
And the day after that.
Then every single day.
The little café slowly transformed into our classroom. Equations were written beside coffee cups, diagrams were sketched on paper napkins, and every time I felt like giving up, he would quietly remind me,
"Mathematics isn't difficult. Fear is."
With each lesson, the questions didn't become easier.
I simply became stronger.
The subject I had once feared slowly became something I could understand, and eventually, something I could believe in.
Then came the examination.
Weeks later, the results were announced.
I had made it.
The first place I wanted to go wasn't home.
It was the café.
I couldn't wait to tell him that I had finally done it.
But his chair was empty.
I waited.
An hour passed.
Then another.
Finally, a young woman walked toward me.
"Are you... the student my father used to teach here?"
I smiled.
"Yes. Where is Professor?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I'm his daughter."
She paused before speaking again.
"My father is no longer with us."
Everything around me suddenly felt distant.
I could barely whisper,
"But... he came here every day."
She nodded softly.
"He had been battling a serious illness for months. The doctors told him to rest. But every day, he insisted on coming here."
She looked at me and said,
"He used to tell us, 'There's a girl who's not losing to mathematics... she's losing to her fear. If I stop showing up, she might stop believing in herself.'"
My eyes drifted toward the empty table.
The untouched chair.
The coffee cups.
The pages filled with equations.
And the smile that had quietly carried me through my darkest days.
Only then did I understand.
He wasn't repaying a debt.
He was protecting a dream.
Some teachers educate through books.
Some teach through their lives.
And a rare few continue teaching even while carrying their own pain, simply because they cannot bear to watch a student give up on a dream.
That day, I didn't just clear an examination.
I carried forward the faith of a teacher who chose hope over his own suffering.
Some lessons end with the ringing of a bell.
The greatest ones stay with us for the rest of our lives.

Wow, I'm crying😭. If I weren't in a public place right now, I'd be sobbing out loud.
The world is tattered and torn, but there's always someone quietly stitching it back together.
Here's to everyone who gives more than they take!!!!!!! 🫡
This comment means more to me than you know. 🥹❤️ Thank you for feeling the story instead of just reading it.
Here's to the quiet people who keep stitching the world back together, one small act of kindness at a time. 🫡
And now it's my turn to head to China for a while. Until I'm back, please take care of yourself—and take care of this wonderful community too. ❤️🇨🇳
Careful with Chinese nights — don't step outside or you'll come back 5kg heavier. Way too much good food out there🤣 hahahahahaha
i don't understand?😅
Haha it's a joke — Chinese night markets have too much good food, so you'll gain weight just walking around 😂 Enjoy your trip!
I'm not saying all of China is non - vegitarian i mean non-vegetarian food is available there. Since I'm veg so I guess I all have to stay hungry
Don't worry, you won't go hungry! Chinese food isn't just about meat — there's actually more vegetarian options. Mapo tofu, stir-fried greens, scallion pancakes, and a whole universe of tofu dishes. You'll probably eat better than most meat-eaters here, trust me 😄
Oh, and I highly recommend latiao (spicy gluten sticks). You'll find out when you get here 😏
I'm only going to chongqing for two days for a meeting, but I feel like I'll be able to experience everything in those two days :D
Hahaha, you're going to the right place! Go try some authentic Mapo Tofu and other Sichuan dishes in Chongqing. But experiencing everything in just two days? All I can say is — give it your best shot, hahahaha 😂
Okay 👍🏻 My workload is eating more then I am.
Don't worry — you'll get to experience the 24/7 delivery speed, sometimes arriving in as fast as 15 minutes. Won't say much else, but you've got to try latiao (spicy gluten sticks). And malatang (spicy hotpot) — you have to have malatang at least once.😂
Yes! I will try!
Thanks :D
"Mathematics isn't difficult. Fear is." Love this. You could insert any word here and it would work. Overcoming fear in difficulty is such a hard skill to learn. Having support from someone else makes the challenge that much easier. Cheers!
I know how that feels 😭
This year I cleared JEE Main, but I couldn't clear JEE Advanced. I'll be joining CSE soon.
Could you guide me on which skills I should focus on during my college years? If you were in my place, what skills would you prioritize?
By the way, your story really touched me. It genuinely made me emotional.
Thank you so much. It really means a lot that my story resonated with you. ❤️
First of all, congratulations on clearing JEE Main, and all the best for your CSE journey! Not clearing JEE Advanced doesn't define your potential—college is where you get to build yourself.
If I were in your place, I'd focus on strengthening programming fundamentals, data structures & algorithms, building real projects, learning Git/GitHub, improving communication skills, and staying consistent. Don't chase every new technology. Build a strong foundation first, and the rest becomes much easier.
Wishing you the very best for the exciting journey ahead. I'm sure you'll do great!
Thank you so much, I was worried so much because I failed to clear JEE Adv.
This story really touched my heart 🥲
I felt that the time you shared with the teacher was truly precious. He was not just teaching mathematics, and you were not just learning for an exam. It felt like both of you were sharing an important part of your lives in that small café.
The line “He wasn’t repaying a debt. He was protecting a dream.” was especially beautiful and emotional.
Thank you for sharing such a moving story 🌈.
Hey Umitomo hope you are doing well :D Thanks for reading story ❤️🙌🏻
Divyanshi, may I ask, can I quote your article in the 12th stratagem that I'm planning to publish tomorrow?
Which article?
The Last Lesson
Yaah! Sure
That's beautiful, touching and well-written!
Thank you so much. I wrote it from the heart, and knowing it touched someone means more than I can express :D
Yeah it's a beautiful story!
Every successful person can usually point to someone who believed in them before they believed in themselves. That’s what makes great teachers unforgettable. Thank you for this beautiful reminder. ❤️
Aww, thank you so much!! Mustafa, Your kind words mean more than you know. I'm really glad this message found a place in your heart!💜
My friend, I'm still hurting inside even now.😭
Don't cry friend because legends never die
This reminded me that great teachers often leave lessons that go far beyond the classroom. Confidence can change someone's path just as much as knowledge can.
Aww, that's such a beautiful way to put it, Hema. ❤️ I couldn't agree more. The lessons we remember the longest are often the ones that gave us confidence, not just information. Thanks for sharing this
